Dr. Phil and his guests strike up heated conversations as they debate the latest hot topics. Should women give up their right to breastfeed their babies in public so other people don't feel uncomfortable? Will passing out condoms in schools prevent unwanted pregnancies or just send the message to kids that it's OK to have sex? And, is it acceptable for others to discipline your kids if they see them acting out in public, or should they just mind their own business? Dr. Phil weighs in on these controversial subjects. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Oh my God!

I cannot believe some women think that showing their breast in public just because they're feeding their babies it's okay, there are places for everything, you just don't go out and do anything in public, you wouldnt have your baby in the middle of a mall, would you?  having a baby is very natural too. Have some respect for other people.

Breastfeeding

I'm outraged that there are women out there that find breastfeeding offensive.  That is what the breast is made for, to feed your child, not to show off in a cute tank top or to amuse your husband or boyfriend it is made to feed your child.  You should not have to hide away in order to feed your child.  I understand modesty when it comes to exposing breasts and you don't have to expose your breast to feed your child.  I breast fed my son for nine months and I did it in public and never once exposed my breast.  I am currently breastfeeding my daughter and I often get nasty looks and sometimes comments.  I am modest enough that my breast is never exposed but I can not keep my daughter under a blanket and I shouldn't have to.  I can't tell you to put your cell phone away even though the ring may  inturrupt my dinner and I can't tell you to put your cigarette out in restaurants that allow smoking so if you don't like that I am feeding my child then look away.  Or leave, I'm not going to live my life around you.

Breast Feeding or bikini

My son turns 36 lol or 37 today! I can't believe first of all that there is stil a discussion of whether a woman should breast feed in public but most of all that DR. PHIL took the side of those who want compromise!!!!!!!!! At least when PHIL Donahue was on the air he made mothers trying to breast feed feel justified!  Now you can see tit and ass everywhere yet people want to discourage breast feeding in public. My youngest is having her first baby in Italy. I hope she will have her first breast feeding experience in a place that know what breasts are for.

Why the volitile reactions?

I cannot understand how so many women are acting like breastfeeding in public is some kind of freak of nature.  There are many many things people do in public that are truely vulger.  What about people who use foul language in front of children, or heavy petting in public?  What about the t-shirts that are demeaning to any given group?  Don't ya think we have bigger social issues to deal with than the fact feeding a child in public makes some people uncomfortable?  Yes, it is a breast, but ya know what, all women have them.

Breastfeeding in public

I realize that the woman on the show does not have children, which makes it harder for her to understand and be sensitive to the need to be able to breastfeed when and where a child is hungry.  No one would ask someone who is using a bottle to take the baby into a bathroom.

I also believe that the other woman's statement about eating the sandwich on the toilet was misunderstood by the "offended by public breastfeeding" guest - the woman was not suggesting that breastfeeding was the same as a sandwich actually being rubbed on the toilet, but simply that we don't choose to go sit on the toilet to eat our meals, why should our children.  And, I tried breastfeeding in a bathroom one time - it was not comfortable, which is a valuable part of the breastfeeding experience - it does impact availability of milk, etc. if the mommy is cramped onto an uncomfy toilet.

However, to the other woman - discretion is important.  It's not anyone's job to make other people sensitive to breastfeeding.  Some people are opposed to it, that won't change simply b/c she is exposing her breast (intentionally), in order to make a point while nourishing her child.

Breastfeeding in public

Breasfeeding is a bonding relationship as well with a mother and her child. It is a natural yet intimate act as a mother provides for her child. But lets be honest here.....there is a time and a place for everything. I have a 16 yr old son who would not see breastfeeding as a natural act between a mother and her child. He would see a sexual act. It would make it impossible for my son who is a professing christian and believes in abstinance in mind and body until marriage, to be able to control his emotions and thoughts if every breastfeeding mother were allowed to expose her breast in public and allow her child to nurse. We have a hard enough time protecting our children without having to argue about this subject. Please respect all people and be modest with your body.  Not to mention "what if a child molester where sitting beside you at a restaurant" you would be feeding that person too! We need to exercise good moral judgements IN ALL THINGS!!!

10/07 The Latest Debates

I totally agree with the woman that dislikes to look at someone breast feeding in public. I realize that breastfeeding is a natural process and I am all for children having natural things, however use alittle discression. I am a single mom and although I did not breastfeed I would have covered up while they did or I would have excused myself to a more private room.

about breastfeeding

well i think breastfeeding is great for a baby but however i agree that it should be done behind closed doors or undersomething. In todays workd Sex has become so open and big and i disagree with the way it has been advertised. Woman use their bodies to much young and old!  Alot of woman are even Fake and those woman still breastfeed as well and dont use anything woman that dont want to cover are wanting attention and dont care who see them cause they think its sexy! well everyone has different opioions and mine is breastfeeding is good for the baby but be respectful to evryone as well as yourself and your child!

Breastfeeding in Restroom

For all the people who mention to go nurse in a restroom, please think about what you are suggesting!  If you cannot visualize it for yourself, please visit this link, which is a Public Service Announcement from Australia:

No problem

When my friend breastfed her child, at first it kind of surprised me. But it only took about 2 seconds to get over it. Truly, this is not a big deal. And surely, we do not want to relegate women to back rooms.
