Dr. Phil and his guests strike up heated conversations as they debate the latest hot topics. Should women give up their right to breastfeed their babies in public so other people don't feel uncomfortable? Will passing out condoms in schools prevent unwanted pregnancies or just send the message to kids that it's OK to have sex? And, is it acceptable for others to discipline your kids if they see them acting out in public, or should they just mind their own business? Dr. Phil weighs in on these controversial subjects. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Sickening!!!

I am completely APPALLED that so many women are AGAINST breast-feeding in public!  I would expect this from uneducated men.. but WOMEN!!  Breast-feeding should be viewed as such a natural, beautiful experience.  I just can't believe that the women on the Dr. Phil show can't see it that way.  When my daughter was born, I had several complications and had a very very hard time breast-feeding before finally having to give it up after a few weeks.  I was devastated that I could not share that gift with my daughter.  Because I know how hard breastfeeding can be, I can't believe that people want to add more complications by forcing women into tiny bathroom stalls or into private corners.  Breast-feeding is a natural way for a mother to feed her child, and women should not be made to feel shameful about it and hide it from the public.

Breast Feeding

I do think that a woman feeding her child is a beautiful thing and creats a bond for the mother and child. I do, however, feel that we do need to be aware of others and be respectful of our fellow man. I think at the very least a woman can cover herself while she is feeding. I think this is a small comprimise, espically to avoid getting a ticket or stares. I feel that when I have children I will breast feed, but only in the comfort of my own home when I can enjoy the bond between my child and myself. In public I will be respectful of others in my surroundings and either remove myself from the situation or bottle feed my child. I think it's a small price to pay, and better than getting a 50+ dollar ticket.

I do think it's a beautiful thing, and do not see anything wrong with it as long as you are respectful of others who might not be comfortable with such things.

Church..

Quote From: hitechgirl

Recently I was at a church service and noticed some kids playing video games.  I thought that was incredibly rude and could not believe their parents would allow their kids to play an electronic video game at church.  The paren'ts were not even paying attention and I simply said to the kids " You really shouldn't be playing video games at church"...and they stopped and seemed to be embarrassed.  Was I wrong for saying anything?  I didn't know at the time and I still don't know, but what is wrong with parents today that they would allow their kids to play video games at church?  Just curious your opinions.  RG

Honestly I agree it was rude to be playing a video game during service... but is that more the fault of the child or the parent that allowed them to bring the game into the service?

I think I would have addressed the parent in the situation and not the child. Simply sayin their child playing the game was a bit of a distraction.

10/07 The Latest Debates

I was very disapointed with the woman's comments against breasfeeding in public.  I think the woman's comments were the height of ignorance on the subject.   Breastfeed in the the bathroom??  Why in the world would I want to expose my infant child with a developing immune system to the millions of bacteria in the bathroom?  Frankly it is disrespectful to prohibit women from breastfeeding in public.  While I do feel that are things mothers can do to cover up out of respect for people surrounding them it is not always possible.  However, I do not feel that women who do breasfeed in public are being indecent or lewd.  To all those breasfeeding mothers out there GOOD FOR YOU!

Breasfeeding In Public

Use disgretion in everything!

If a mom is discret ,I see nothing wrong with breastfeeding, however total exposure in pubic places is not appropriiate.

Breastfeeding is good!

I breastfed my daughter for a year and a half. I was a little nervous in public at first, worried about what people thought and felt. After I got used to it though it was a breeze. I just wore clothes that would pull up and down quickly and used a recieving blanket. So I was totally covered.

I feel it's okay to breastfeed in public as long as it is done in a respectful manner. Our babies have to eat and it's very healthy when they are breastfed.

So I am totally for breastfeeding in public. Anyone who breastfeeds more power to them!!

I breastfed one of my 4 kids for 12 months.  The others I didn't.  I really don't remember breastfeeding in public.  Although it doesn't bother me to see a mom breastfeed her baby WITHOUT TEETH in public.  What would be an interesting subject is talking to mom's who breastfeed their older children.....??????  Kindergarden?  And that's not funny, but they have that Le Leche Club thing and some woman either culturally or for whatever reason go beyond what is necessarily.  At least in my opinion.  Anyone else ever hear of this?
One time I saw a rather large child being breast feed by his mother. I believe, that when a child is able to feed him or herslef, then it is time to stop breastfeeding the child. Its really nasty to see an older childer sucking his mothers teat. I have no problem with mothers feeding baby's but five year old children? no.

Breastfeeding in public

I still don't understand what is offensive about breastfeeding in public. I breastfed both my daughters in public and didn't have anyone comment or glare. Maybe my community is more accepting of breastfeeding than others. I usually did use a light blanket to cover up and I think most people were actually unaware of what I was doing, however there were times when it was too hot or a blanket was unavailable and I did nurse my child in public. I see women nursing their children sometimes and it makes me happy to see that they are nourishing their child in the best possible way and with what God intended them to nourish their child with. I am proud of all women who make the choice to breastfeed, no matter where they decide to do it, and I hope other people will become more accepting and less judgemental of this. If  nursing does offend you, maybe you need to explore the reasons why, instead of just expecting that other people should change their behaviors for you.

other families

I work at an amusement park where when mothers breast feed without covering up, other mothers are forced to explain to their children why the breast is hanging out. Thank goodness for security! As for the one lady on the show who was saying she should be able to do it whenever and where ever she pleases, then how does she feel about simply walking around topless at all times so she can get her child to the source of food faster? Why even bother with a a blouse at all? That way she can simply feed her child faster. Would that bother her? Afterall, according to her arguments, it's natural and she wants to be able to influence others to view the breast differently.

Also, if others don't like the urinating in public comparison, then let's try this: having sex in order to procreate is a natural and beautiful thing. Sex between a husband and wife or two consenting adults in order to MAKE the child (who will later breast feed), is natural. Should we be ok with sex in public places?

The woman simply needs to demonstrate some sensitivity and modesty. Her breast isn't beautiful to anyone but her baby. Get a towel. I would not want my breast hanging out for the world to see. It would not hurt her. And as for teh audience comment to "look the other way- don't watch," well,.... it's kind of distracting when one is standing in line for a roller coaster and a woman whips it out right in front of you and your child.

You should say something, but after the service, and to the parents.  The games they played distracted you from the service, and that would be an honest thing to say to the parents.
