Dr. Phil and his guests strike up heated conversations as they debate the latest hot topics. Should women give up their right to breastfeed their babies in public so other people don't feel uncomfortable? Will passing out condoms in schools prevent unwanted pregnancies or just send the message to kids that it's OK to have sex? And, is it acceptable for others to discipline your kids if they see them acting out in public, or should they just mind their own business? Dr. Phil weighs in on these controversial subjects. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

For the post about PUMPING MILK....

I am not going to sit at home for 3 hours pumping milk just to get 2 ounces.  I don't know about any ones else but for me whenever I tried to pump, it seemed pointless, I could never get enough.  And then in the mean time, I had to feed the baby in betweenpumping, and what if the baby won't take a bottle, what if you don't want your child to have a bottle.  I know many moms that went from the boob to a cup, no hassles of trying to take a baby off the bottle which can be a lot of hard work.

I also don't understand why so many people see a mother feeding.  Do you stop and stare?  I know everytime I have seen a mother nursing it is only for a second as I am walking by or minding my own business in the restuarnt.

Oh my goodness!  You are so far off base here.  Breastfeeding mothers don't need to nurse their babies to bare their breasts.  If that's what we wanted, we could simply choose skimpy clothes.  You'll see a lot more exposed flesh from a woman in a tube top than you'll see from a breastfeeding mother.

My compassion goes out to your patients who have a doctor who cares so little for the health of children.  As a doctor, you should be encouraging mothers to breastfeed for the health of the babies.

I agree with you completely. I kept thinking, there is some reason these women insist on baring their breasts in public , because there just really is no point to it. It's too easy to cover up, and you don't have to go to the bathroom to nurse, there are always other places that are not quite so public to resort to without having to use the bathroom. If you are motivated, it's not that hard. I nursed 5 babies and I never once indecently exposed my breasts in public, would never even consider it, because as you say, breasts are viewed by the public as sexual objects. Right or wrong, that's how it is in America. And my husband is the only one with the privilege of viewing my breasts.I think you hit the nail on the head. It has to be an exhibitionist thing. There just is no other explanation as far as I am concerned. Also, using the bathroom is also a natural function, but I don't want to witness someone doing that either.

I have to agree with the previous quote!  YOU ARE A DOCTOR for Pete's sake.  You of all people should know the importance of breast feeding children.  I had a 6 week premature infant and due to a prior surgery, I could not breast feed.  Had I been able to, she would have rec'd the nutrients in the colostrum that she needed to get better quicker.  Again, I should not have to explain that to you of all people.  Why must incompetent people such as yourself think things such as farting and belching are as natural as breast feeding?  OK, lets be serious here, you can hold a fart and a belch, but when your child is hungry...THEY NEED TO EAT!!!  How about the next time that you are really hungry and are grumpy because you haven't ate for whatever reason, why don't you go and take your food into your car, where it might be either extremely hot/cold, or in a stinky bathroom.  Women don't breast feed because they lack sexual confidence, only someone who may lack sexual confidence would think of that!

Breast Milk is Best!!

My son was an extreme preemie. He was born 3 months, yes I said months, early. He was large for his age weighing in at 3 pounds 1 ounce. He fit in the palm of my hand. He couldn't eat, he was too early to know how. At 12 weeks early, his brain barely knew it had to maintain a heartbeat and breathing and these basic functions stopped on a couple of occasions. I lived 3 hours away from the hospital. Thank God that Mount Caramel West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio had a donor breast milk program. Breast milk was pumped by women as donated. It was triple pasturized and given to hospitals for special babies, like mine. My son was fed breast milk through a tiny tube that dripped into his little tummy. Today my son, Colt, is 18 months old. He is happy and healthy. Part of this is due to breast milk....mine never came in due to his early arrival.

A womans body is designed for one thing...giving and sustaining life. Everything else you get from us is a bonus. Society needs to grow up.

I don't know who my son's milk came from, but THANK YOU! The odds are always against extreme preemies from the start. Your selfless act and generous donation, along with Laura Shade and her team at the hospital, gave my son the chance he needed.

Breast milk is best...period. A child has a right to life. Give your child the best life you can. If it your choice to breast feed, then do so with love.

You clearly see breastfeeding as a sexual thing, or you would not compare it to adults suckling at a breast.   GROW UP!
Breastfeeding a child is totaly different than letting your partner "suckle" at your breast. The child is recieving nourishment. I take it you didn't BF your child either, because you saw it as a sexual thing. I'm sorry, but research has shown that breastfeeding is WAY more healthy that formula. I hope you can change your view on this before your daughter or daughter-in-law, (i don't know your family situation so i don't know which one you will have) has a child and BF's her child. I have an open mind to everyones opinion, but I also have a right to feed my child. Please have an open mind to a hungry child.

I strongly believe that it is OK to breastfeed in public as long as it is done discreetly.  I did it with my two children, and my grown daughter has done it with her baby.  When a child is old enough to hold a "sippy cup", than any breastfeeding should be done privately.
Of course, MOST women who nurse in public (myself included) DO nurse discretely, ad you and your daughter has done. I've never seen a women not do it discretely.

Condoms/sex ed

As noted by Dr. Phil on the show it is important to have the right kind of education, one which should include both abstinence and the proper uses of birth control. But the real reason I'm am writing this is to say that abstinence is a moral value. More so than anyone else in a child's life, it is the parents' job to instill the moral values which they want their children to follow (as to how they should do so is a debate for another time). But, if parents value abstinence and later find out that their child is sexually active, continuing to try and teach them abstinence is pointless. the parents in this case have done too little to late!

Breast VS. Bottle

Baby bottles have a little soft thing on top of bottle this thing is called a NIPPLE! What do our breast have, a NIPPLE! Does this tell you that if children are suppose to suck on a nipple then maybe it should be the more natural one and no I don' t mean Playtex. Children get more atttention from their parents when they are breastfed. They are not going to be tosted in a crib with a bottle proped in thier mouth just so they can get ear infections. They are not going to be left sitting in a soiled diaper because who wants a stinky baby close to their nose. Not me I want the crap off of them. And finally, a breastfed baby and their mom have this different kind of bond with their child that bottlefed babies don't. These children that are left in houses by them selves or left in cars for an hour, they are mostlikely not breastfed.

10/07 The Latest Debates

Quote From: mrsean

Nothing is wrong with public breast feeding, but in relations to public indecency, there has to be a fine line or a set boundary.  As an evident example of indescresion, the womans Oriola (the brown part around the nipple) must be hidden from the veiw of people in the enviornmental audience. If the nipple is in full veiw of the people around the woman, it would be a mental shock and the female  must understand that 9 out of 10 people in public have an undeniably sense of Tabboo when it comes to visual contact with a persons nipple.

Cover up with a towel, like true women have done since the beginning of time. Everyong knows that your nipples are probably fine looking, but to see them would even shock a pervert.

Oriola? Mental shock? True women? Shock a pervert?

Are you serious?

condoms in school

I beliece that if kids are given condoms in school. They will use them. It's proven that if you have something (food, money etc..) it will get used. We have to arm kids, but not with condoms, with information. Then they can know what they are getting into.
