(Original Air Date: 10/13/05) In a heartbeat, your entire life can change. No one knows this better than the families of Brandi and Daniel. Seventeen-year-old Brandi was a cheerleader, an excellent student and an all-American girl. She was in love with athletic 18-year old Daniel. Now he’s dead and she finds herself behind bars serving a 12-year sentence, all because of what happened in just a split second. Was it murder or simply a horrific accident? Hear members of both families describe how the tragedy unfolded, and the struggle to put together the pieces of their shattered lives. Plus, Dr. Phil visits Brandi in prison to ask some very hard questions. She has an emotional message for Daniel's mother -- and for Daniel. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

My daughter was also killed but by her father!

Ok so I know how the mother in this story is feeling about wanting Brandi to spend the rest of her time in prison that she was sentenced!  My ex was home alone with our five week old daughter and couldn't handle her crying so he shook her so hard it was like falling from a second story building and hitting concrete.  When I was called at work I was told that she was choking I rushed to the hospital and found doctors trying to stick a tube down her throat.  I was screaming down the halls and making a huge scene while my ex kept telling me it was all his fault.  I didn't think at the time it was so I was trying to get to my daughter to be near her.  The doctors and nurses must have been instructed not to tell me anything because I got no answers from anyone until they told me she was being transeferred to a different hospital for pediatrics.  After she was settled there the doc came in and took our statements.  Then an officer was called in to arrest my ex for possible murder.  He fled and got as far as his parents house and was again taken into custody.  He admitted to "making a mistake" and he was sentenced to 13 years no parole no appeal.  I want the mom to know she has others who have gone through this and Brandi needs to spend time in prison even though she will live the rest of her life with guilt.

She has true remorse. A 17yr old don't belong in prison.  What horrers will face she face there. Will that help her be more sorry for what she did?
A 17rs old that COMMITS MURDER BELONGS in jail.....come back from la la land......A 17yr old knows the difference between right and wrong and KNOWS HOW TO LIE AND

Manipulate AS WE JUST SAW DURING THE INTERVIEW WITH BRANDI!!!

you can tell she is sorry

You shows how sorry she is. All she did was cry and say how sorry she was. The famliy of the dead son, needs to forgive..not just  Brandi but themselves first of all. They are still hurting but it has been four years and they parents have two other children who will have children, will get married...I am not saying that they need to just forget Daniel but they need to move on it will make the process easier if they do so and they will feel better.

The thing that went on are sad. Like what dr. phil said no one knows what happen but them two. The mother of the son i know is hurt, but she does not know what went on behind closed doors same with her daughter.  Did she see went on NO, so how does she know. I know you can't forget but you should always forgive.  what she said about brandis mom was wrong she is just branging her self down.  i think brandi she get out.

Confused

It is a shame that Brandi went for a plea bargin... I suspect the time would have been longer.  Not knowing all the details makes it interesting.  Were there signs of abuse, were there police reports showing he was "threatening" her??  And then there is the presence of mind enough to drive 30 minutes home and place a tree limb through the windshield.  Either she had plenty of time to figure out what to do or "on the spur of the moment"  she came up with a "brain storm".  "pa-lease"...  Intentional or not... WHY DIDN'T SHE STOP?  Most motorist would allow that respect for even someones dog.  This was a human being!  TWELVE YEARS?... too easy.

Unbelievable Mother

I personally believe that the mother of the dead son is out for nothing more than revenge.  With what i understand from what i've seen on the show, and from my own personal thoughts, i think that Daniel was upset that his girlfriend was actually leaving him this time.  Out of desperation he jumped in front of the car intentionally.  I believe he wanted his girlfriend to hit him so she would fee sympathy for him.  I think Daniel wanted to control someone and didnt know how to live without someone under his control.  Once his girlfriend decided to leave him he became distrought and would do anything to keep her within his reigns, even throw himself in front of a moving car.  As far as the sons mother, she is out for nothing more than revenge.  She cannot accept the fact that her son is a mind abusing control freak.  She doesn't want to believe that her son was the person he was and wants to protect him which makes her put the blame on his girlfriend and only her.

17 or not...she hit someone with a car...and now he's dead...she has her life...why should she have the chance to enjoy even part of it....she should have to pay for what she did!

10/13 Cheerleader Scandal

The issue whether she is guilty or not guilty should no longer be a concern. The damage has been done, both families have been torn apart and now they should work on healing themselves. They need to work on overcoming the hardship in a positive manner. They need to  find peace with God and each other someway somehow.  It made me heartbroken to hear both stories, and my heart goes out to both families enduring the pain.

Set her free...

My deepest sympathy goes out to both families..but I feel a terrible injustice has occured here, and believe that Brandi should be released. Not everything is so cut and dry...and what happened to her troubled boyfriend was a terrible accident. It is obvious he was emotionally and mentally unstable, and it is this that plays a key part in this accident. I think his family is bound by revenge and pride ...and these will be the obstacles they will need to overcome to heal and forgive.
