(Original Air Date: 10/13/05) In a heartbeat, your entire life can change. No one knows this better than the families of Brandi and Daniel. Seventeen-year-old Brandi was a cheerleader, an excellent student and an all-American girl. She was in love with athletic 18-year old Daniel. Now he’s dead and she finds herself behind bars serving a 12-year sentence, all because of what happened in just a split second. Was it murder or simply a horrific accident? Hear members of both families describe how the tragedy unfolded, and the struggle to put together the pieces of their shattered lives. Plus, Dr. Phil visits Brandi in prison to ask some very hard questions. She has an emotional message for Daniel's mother -- and for Daniel. Talk about the show here.

Two lives wasted....

How unfortunate.   Whether this tragedy was a fit of rage or an accident on Brandi's part, or a suicide or accident on Daniel's, either way it is a tragedy for both of their families.   Even if it was an accident on Brandi's part, it may have been a suicide on Daniel's.   It sounds as if their relationship was volatile and neither one of them were mature enough to handle the emotions involved.  Two young lives wasted.   I see no purpose in keeping Brandi in prison for an additional nine years.  Nothing will bring Daniel back.  Her life has changed forever as well.  She needs to find her place in society and begin making steps towards a productive adult life.

I can't even begin to imagine how you fill.  However, I do know what it feels like to want to end it all.  I never mentioned it, and my parents never knew anything about it until the day that I took 25+ sleeping pills.  In fact, the only way they knew is because my cousin had to take me to the hospital because I couldn't stop throwing up.  SHE had to call my parents, not me.  The pressure of being "perfect" in today's world is brought on by so many things.  I'm not saying that Daniel was trying to kill himself, no one will every know that, because Daniel is the only that can truely tell us.  I am sorry for your lose, however...you're young, beautiful, and intelligent, you need to NOT FORGET, but start forgiving a little bit at a time...it's the only way that you're going to be able to move on with you life.  You can't ever forget someone that you loved so dearly, however, if the situation were reversed, you would want Brandi's family to forgive your family...it's not easy, and it's a very very very long road (for both sides).  However, niether family can go on until the anger is gone...and you have every right to be angry, it's part of the healing process, but 12 years is along time to put your life on hold because of anger.  She says she's sorry, you have to believe that, whether it was an accident or not...she can't take it back.

what were you even listening???? And who are you to judge what happened that night were you there, were you the "eye witness"?

Brandi is TOTALLY guilty for killing Daniel. She went into her parents bedroom and took the car keys WITHOUT permission, which is theft! She NEVER asked to take the keys. Her father says that he's a light sleeper and he would have heard Brandi taking the keys, which doesn't add up right. Now, that Brandi's 17 and served about 3 years of her 12 year sentence, she was only about 13 years old when this happened. A 13-year-old should never be behind a wheel of a motorized vehicle, when he/she is not in the age of majority to drive.

Brandi's story does NOT add up right. She says that after she hit him she never noticed that the wind shield was damanged until she got home and tried to lie to her parents about it before she confessed. When she got home, she put part of a tree in the wind shield to make it look like a tree busted the wind shield.

I sympathize with Daniel's family, even though I don't know what it's like to lose a sibling or a child, but I do know what it's like to lose a parent. I know how they feel!!!!!

this is terrible...

This shouldnt have happened in the first place. Anyone who says that Daniel deserved what he got needs to take a look in the mirror & admit what a horrible person you are. Accident or not Brandi should stay in prison for the full 12 years. Eventually she'll get out of prison and be with her family. She IS NOT the victim in this tragic story. Her family should take a grip on reality and see that Brandi committed murder. My heart goes out to Daniel's family. They will never have their son back and it isnt fair NO MATTER WHAT he might have said before his murder.I think Brandi is lying to herself and so is her family, she should just tell the entire truth at least she still has a life to live no matter where she is. I do believe Brandi knew exactly what she was doing when she hit Daniel.

she didnt

Quote From: acpjenkins

I have to say I feel for both families however,I think Brandi knew what she was doing I honestly didnt see any TRUE remorse. If I "accidently" hit someone I was in love with or knewor hell didt know, anyone with any human instincts would stop and try to help and stay for the cops to come and do whatever is humanly possible. She didnt. She went on home with a "blank" mind.Who in there right mind has a "blank"mind after they hit another human being?I mean he had a family a life a name he wasnt a cat or something. She knew exactly what she was doing that night in my opinion.
i think she didnt know because i was in her place i was in a abusive relationship an she was probable scared to stop and see if he was ok because if he wasnt then he probable would have killed her an i dont know how i would react if i hit someone you probable aint going to be thinking at that moment so in my opinion she didnt do it on purpose.

my opinion

i can't believe that this girl Brandie was sent to prison for 12 years for what had happened, even though the police report showed evidence proving her innocence. now plz don't get me wrong i completely sympathize with the boy's family for what had happened but in my oppinion daniels family made themselves look like downright mean ppl on national t.v. I agree that both sides have suffered a great deal because of this, but Brandie staying in prison for something that she is truely sorry about, and something that i see to being done without any intention, is absolutely pointless. My personal belief is that if she was out of prison, less problems would be ovvuring in her family that is breaking down because of this. There is no point for her being in prison right now, if she is out, this will still be haunting her mind until the day she passes. If the police report proved her innocence, and she is truely sorry for this, what lesson does she have to learn in prison?
