(Original Air Date: 10/13/05) In a heartbeat, your entire life can change. No one knows this better than the families of Brandi and Daniel. Seventeen-year-old Brandi was a cheerleader, an excellent student and an all-American girl. She was in love with athletic 18-year old Daniel. Now he’s dead and she finds herself behind bars serving a 12-year sentence, all because of what happened in just a split second. Was it murder or simply a horrific accident? Hear members of both families describe how the tragedy unfolded, and the struggle to put together the pieces of their shattered lives. Plus, Dr. Phil visits Brandi in prison to ask some very hard questions. She has an emotional message for Daniel's mother -- and for Daniel. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

I agree

After viewing the sad program today regarding the young woman that drove her car into her boyfriend, killing him, I'd like to offer a suggestion.  Maybe Dr. Phils show would consider contacting Dr. Henry Lee, one of Americas foremost forensic scientists, to review this case.  It's possible that  forensics can prove what happened the night this boy was killed.  Take the emotion out of it and let science discover the truth...and let the chips fall.   Either way, both families will have to decide when they will put this behind them and start living again.
I was watching the show and thinking the same thing...I do believe that the finger of guilt will point directly at Brandi!!!

Brandi

I felt that the show was very good, i feel bad for both sides of the families but i belive she did not kill him on purpose. Although she shoudl receive some jail time 12 years is to long. I feel sad for his family but should concider what everyone is going through too.

no title

daniels family only wants revenge. they do not need to get over the loss of their son because that is tragic, but they do need to get over the hostility towards Brandi's family. She has done her time and they want to make them suffer. But making them suffer is doing nothing; I think his family is acting very immaturely. I take sides with Brandi's family because they are, in a way, being victimized by people who are immature and acting on emotions. It happened 5 years ago! get over the hostility already and go on with your life. I just sat in a church last week and watched one of my good friends bury her little sister who was 15. granted it was because of illness but her family is moving on - no grudges against doctors or anyone. My friend is going back out to west to school again. they are moving on with their lives. Daniels family seems to live day to day to get revenge.

Cheerleader Scandal

First I would like to say how terrible this situation must be for both families.  My heart goes out to all of the parents involved.  The interview with Brandi was very telling for me.  It was the words she used and her facial expressions that lead me to believe that she is in fact guilty of manslaughter.  I think she lost control of her emotions and took his life.    I believe a just sentence was conferred upon her.  I also believe that young good people such as her deserve second chances.  I also believe that the only way she can come to terms with her own situation is to admit to the parole board exactly what happened, including her own guilt.  I believe that after she admits her mistake in full, that she should be paroled to the custody of her family.  I believe in this way that justice can be fully served.

Tragic event is being made worse

Weather Brandi is guildty or not is up to the judge and the jury.. at this point she has been found guilty... IF enough evidence is produced to secure a second trial to try and overturn the first then so be it.. the fact will continue prove themselves one way or another. I hold no judgement as i don't have all the fact other then what was witness today... But as another view just posted.. teenagers act irrational when facing critical and sometimes, unknown to them at that time, critical live changing events. At this moment I DO however hold judgement on both familys.. Brandi's family has suffered a loss ... while she is alive and well she is not with them.. she is not a member of the family on holidays and special occasions nor will she be for 8 more years. This is a loss in its own rights. Her family needs to move forward... the pity trip is just gonna further the mothers medical problems till the suffer a second loss.... her death..  Her brother.. he is too young to be dwelling on the fact day after day after day...he needs to seek councilling to deal with his emotions and move on as a young man and grow up learning the most crucial and valuable lifes lesson here in this story. Think before you react.. consequnces are forever! As for the father.. yes i too believe he is being too belittling of the mother of  Daniel... her not being immediately in his life had NO decision or bearing on what happened that night..  Now for the mother of Daniel. I feel for her loss. I have worked numerous years as a paramedic/ firefighter and have dealt with loss of life on many occasions. but her loss is gonne be ever greater is she continues her path of pure hatred and wanting revenge. The courts have decided... there is nothing else she can do about it. Yes hating her make you feel warm inside.... for now. But while you comsume yourself with the hatred of Brandi you will loose sight of the rest of the family who has lossed as well.. i beleive it was a daughter present with them... what are you teaching her by showing pure hatred? No one say welcome them with open arms and start a relationship with each others family BUT you can learn to forgive. This will not only heal yourself but your family as well.. Revenge and hatred are in the news and our news papers every single day. it just breeds more hatred and more evil and soon  it will take another life. then another then another... While i am not trained in psychology i think both family could benefit from councilling to learn to deal with their losses and how to move forward. THEIR lives are still very much before them. Do something with your life. If you don't want to forget Daniel, Start a program in school teaching our teenagers how to cope with stress, how to deal with relationships, how to deal with loss, anything its better then breeding more hatred...

Unbelievable

This girl is going to be pushing 30 when she gets out of jail. She could come back into the world even harder and more coniving....with the love and support of her twisted family.

God help the poor man that falls into her arms then.

wow

A persons perception is a persons reality. We choose our experiences, these eight people have choosen quite tangled tale. If your children are playing in the back yard and you absolutely know they are safe, do you really care what game they are playing? Doctor, I don't think you even cracked the egg today, but you have my deepest respect for trying.

Just a thought

While watching Dr. Phil speak with Brandi. He said to her what would you say to Daniel well it was pretty much the same thing she said to his mother just directed at him. If I was in her shoes my main thing to say to daniel if her story was true would be...Daniel ........  WHY???? why did you jump in front of the car? But she didnt her big thing was apologizing if she truly was telling the truth.. whether or not he died her main thing should be to ask him why he did what he did..
