(Original Air Date: 10/13/05) In a heartbeat, your entire life can change. No one knows this better than the families of Brandi and Daniel. Seventeen-year-old Brandi was a cheerleader, an excellent student and an all-American girl. She was in love with athletic 18-year old Daniel. Now he’s dead and she finds herself behind bars serving a 12-year sentence, all because of what happened in just a split second. Was it murder or simply a horrific accident? Hear members of both families describe how the tragedy unfolded, and the struggle to put together the pieces of their shattered lives. Plus, Dr. Phil visits Brandi in prison to ask some very hard questions. She has an emotional message for Daniel's mother -- and for Daniel. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

10/13 Cheerleader Scandal

Quote From: kristie

i am soooo irritated with everyone crying this whole "physically abusive" crap! i was in a physically abusive relationship for not very long because like brandi i ended it. however, there was no way in hell i was gonna go to his house to give him his petty crap, like skates back especially in the middle of the night.  she should have had him come to HER home in the day time to retrieve his items.  this abuse card eeryone is calling is a freaking joke, not saying it didnt happen just saying its  a  joke... big KIDS in Adult relationships, run over someone and KILL him and .......OOOPPSS HE WAS MEAN TO ME..... WAH WAH WAH!
Not everyone in an abusive relationship reacts like you.  Everyone is a different critter.  Do not compare yourself to everyone else, is my point.  Teenagers are totally reactive to their environment of the moment, as well.  We have no idea of the words being exchanged on the phone before she went over there.  Maybe he threatened her and she was scared for her family, we don't know........ You are yourself and she is herself.

Brandi's MOM

In an earlier post, you claimed to be Brandi's best friend since the sixth grade. Who are you REALLY?

Will the real Brandi's Mom please stand up?

I'm beginning to see where Brandi gets her penchant for telling falsehoods......

I hope you are so lucky............

Quote From: stephyg

isn't my picture of my daughter cute?!!!!!!!!!!  i get to spend everyday with her!!  i hope brandi NEVER gets out!

I hope you are so lucky to never have to deal with a daughter in an abusive relationship.  And don't say you won't because you never know what the future may hold.  So pray one day your adorable little girl doesn't have a crazed boyfriend who will do anything to be in control including jumping in front of her car to stop her from leaving.  Abusive people are so determined to be in control that they sometimes do things without thinking.  I'll show her, well he did, and I feel extremely sorry for his family's loss but I also feel for Brandi, I've been there.

Excuse me, but you know nothing about my past life...

Quote From: helenaruth

Don't judge Brandi, you don't know what was in her mind and until you have been the recipient of an abusive partner you don't know what was going on.  At the same age as Brandi I experienced my first and only abusive relationship and the guy will do anything to be in control, including jumping in front of a car to keep you from passing.  Unless you've lived it you don't know.  You will never understand.  It is easy to read about these things and say what you would do but until you are in that situation, you don't know.
I definitely HAVE been in Brandi's shoes. At 17, I was married to an abuser. I didn't get the strength to leave and divorce him until I was 25 with two children.  So yes, I've been there.. and I still say she is GUILTY.

No way is she justified in what she did.  There were smarter/better/more logical things she could have done, like wake her parents up and tell them she needs help, instead of stealing their car and killing someone.

Prove me wrong

Quote From: melyssa123

Canada and America are not that different. For both people, you need to check/cite your sources before making such a claim!

Check you numbers on how many different ways people have killed themselves and how many times each one has been used.  People are different.

10/13 Cheerleader Scandal

Quote From: aviano5

I am currently watching today's show and I am so angry.  If Brandi was innocent, then why take a plea bargain?  She agreed to the plea bargain so now she has to live with the choice she made.  I feel for her family, but we all live with the choices we make...even the "accidents" we cause.  We live in Italy and their law states that if you are at fault in an accident resulting in death due to negligence, you may be sentenced to  12 years in prison and large fines.  Anything that empares your ability to react to your surroundings, is no different than drunk driving.  For her to think that she would serve only 120 days for a HIT AND RUN was ludicrous.  Her HIT AND RUN was no accident.  That may be why her plea bargain was for VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER.  Live and learn...
I do not know how the law reads in the state where Brandi lives. I can only say what would have happened to her in Court here with the circumstances she, herself, described. She took her parents vehicle without their permission. This was verified by her parents. This, in itself, was a felony. She struck the boy with that vehicle and left the scene of the accident without checking to see what she hit and not offering assistance to an injuried party. This was another felony. According to our law, commission of a felony (or felonies) that result in the death of another person is murder. When she struck him, she threw his body 58 feet. She had to be driving at least 60 miles and hour. I may be mistaken, but I heard hear a reasonable explanation of why she turned around and drove back. She is fortunate that she got a plea bargain for manslaughter. Had she not set all of this in motion by taking her parents vehicle, Daniel would be alive and Brandi would not be in jail. Concluding, if her parents don't get some help for her brother and start insisting that he straighten up and do right, they are only going to experience more heartache as he will probably end up on drugs or in prison.

I am logged on under her name because I couldn't get on, again, ask before you leap.  Brandi has not changed her story neither has she lied, read their stories in the papers, each one tells a different story, rewatch the show, they lied on it and you want to ask who is lying.

Of course it is not justified...........

I did not say Brandi was justified in hitting Daniel.  I said until you've been in an abusive relationship you don't know what they are capable are.  If you have been in an abusive relationship as you say then you should know how controlling and overpowering they are.  Jumping in front of a car to keep her from passing would not be an unusual thing for an abusive person to do.  They act before thinking, as long as they are in control.  Don't get offended, we are all entitled to our opinions.  If you have been in an abusive relationship you above others should understand how I feel and that is I get irritated at people who have never been in this situation saying what they would have done.  Well, until you are there you don't know.  I am glad you got out and I hope you are having a wonderful life now!

Life is a Blessing

I have never felt more compelled to respond to a subject than I was after watching this show.  I was saddened to see the hurt, anger and hate that filled both Brandi and Daniel's families.  I remained frustrated throughout the show as I continued to watch these families wage war on each other.  It was not until the last five minutes that I found some solace as Dr. Phil talked to them about letting go of their anger and opting instead to take back their lives.

I know only too well what these families faced, because my family went through something very similar.  On the eve of my 25th birthday, my brother (only one week away from this 24th birthday) was instantly killed by a drunk driver.  The driver was his best friend.  Initially, we all faced heart-wrenching sadness, then anger, then emptiness, then tons of what ifs............ It has been 18 years since my brother was killed and  I don't really think about the man who took his life.    He spent only one year in jail.  It's not up to me or my family to forgive him.  It's up to him and his higher power.

We celebrate my brother's life by keeping his memory alive in our own lives in positive ways.  Dr. Phil was 100% correct when he said that both families needed to let go of their anger in order to move on.  This truly is a difficult task, but once achieved, the benefits are endless.  When I think of my brother I don't think about the wife or children that he will never have, the holidays he will miss, etc.  Instead I remember the goofy and stupid things we did when we were young.  I remember his smile and his curly hair and how we always used to compete at everything - especially water skiing.  I remember how my parents would get mad when they caught him ditching school and how he drove around in a big old station wagon (like the one from "Vacation").  You see, life is a celebration and a blessing.  Life gives us unexpected joys and sadness.  How we choose to accept and handle these "gifts" determine the tempo of our own lives.

And one more thing that Dr. Phil was correct about - you really don't know until you've experienced it first-hand.  It's very easy to have an opinion - it's something quite different to have an opinion once you've experienced it.
