(Original Air Date: 10/17/05) Do you catch yourself mesmerized by the photos in People or US Weekly magazines, looking to see who's wearing what, who's drunk and who's kissing whom? We can't get enough of celebrities, but when does our obsession go too far? Dr. Phil's first guests are two photographers who capture famous faces — but one is a paparazzo who chases down the stars, while the other is invited by celebs to take their pictures. Then, meet two women who can't stop obsessing over their favorite celebrity. Tabitha's infatuation with Tommy Lee is holding her back from meeting her "real" soul mate, and taking time and money away from her 3-year-old daughter. Could something biological be causing her obsession? And, Jenni wants to be the famous twin Mary-Kate Olsen so badly, it's ruining her life and could be killing her. Share your thoughts.

Find out what happened on the show.

What shocked me

I read the previews on Dr. Phil.com but I wasn't aware that this show was going to feature ADULTS.

If your real life is so boring or pathetic that you have to live vicariously through a celebrity you need professional help.  Personally I am to busy with working full time, housework, husband, and kids to be obessed with anyone.  In other words get a life!!!!!!!!!!!!

Narcolepsy!

Quote From: dhughes150

I was surprised to see that Narcolepsy was brought up on a show about bizarre or abberant "behaviors".  I certainly hope the large number of people doing research on Dr. Phil's staff didn't actually believe Narcolepsy is an "abberant behavior" or any type of  "behavior" for that matter.  It makes it sound like something that could be treated and cured.  There is no known cure for Narcolepsy.  It is a Neurological Disorder, not a "behavior".  An incurable disease.  I have had Narcolepsy since I was 12 but wasn't diagnosed until I was 27yrs old.  No one in my immediate family had ever had any experience with it or were aware they should have been watching for symptoms.  Mother once accused me of being on drugs my senior year in high school because I couldn't keep my eyes open during an argument with her.  I wasn't on drugs, that was my EDS (excessive daytime sleepiness).  I honestly thought everyone had extreme physical reactions to heighened emotions like I did.  But that's just a symptom of Narcolepsy called Cataplexy (loss of motor function).  I also was told to "suck it up" and be an adult when I would snuggle up to my husband the first few years of marriage after an extremely horrific nightmare.  It wasn't until later I found out that is also a symptom of Narcolepsy called Hypnogogic Hallucinations and yes, they are as frightening as the name sounds.  There is also sleep paralysis, automatic behavior, insomnia & short term memory problems.  But the worst has to be the ugly word that was used to describe me for many years by my parents and even my spouse.  That word is lazy.  I wanted to scream and cry and say "I"m not lazy, I'm just sleepy."  I slept all the time, I took naps every day and couldn't get enough.  My husband would get frustrated at me falling asleep after being in the passenger seat of a car for just 5 minutes.  He didn't understand.  I fell asleep in class too much so I couldn't continue college.  That made my parents angry.  They didn't understand.  No one did. I went to my family physician because I was experiencing some bizarre symptoms besides always being sleepy.  He sent me to a Neurologist and less than 24hrs later I was diagnosed with both genetic Narcolepsy genes.  I was able to take Provigil to stay awake, but impossible now that I'm pregnant.  I just have to fight to stay awake but the fatigue of pregnancy and the EDS combined sometimes frustrates me to tears.  I grab a soda on the way home from work hoping it will keep me from having an EDS attack while driving.  This is not a new problem  Before I was diagnosed I would drive back and forth to college nearly falling asleep every single day.  Most days I would pull over to the side of the road and take a 15min nap before continuing to school.  School is only 30min from home.  I'm not trying to get anyone to feel sorry for me, I'm just wanting people that thought maybe this was something that can be fixed with counseling to know it is an incurable disease.  I also wanted to show that it's also not just a great plot joke in a movie (Duce Bigalow/Moulin Rouge/Rat Race/Austin Powers).  This is a disorder I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.  Narcolepsy is a disorder that damages certain brain cells.  These are the cells that regulate the time of the day when the chemical that puts you to sleep is released.  People with healthy brain cells sleep at night because those cells release the chemical at night the way they are designed to work.  My brain cells are permanently damaged and release the chemical at all hours of the day or night and not on any particular schedule.  This causes the EDS, which really messes with my sleep cycles.  It is very important that people sleep correctly at night, certain things must happen for a restful and productive sleep.  Narcolepsy affects my REM sleep which messes with my dream cycles.  Most people dream when they are in deep REM sleep at the end of their sleep cycle.  I dream at the beginning of my sleep cycle at night before my REM sleep can start.  I can have a hallucination/nightmare and wake up just to find out I went to bed just 10min ago.  This has turned my life upsidedown of course but I have adapted as best I can.  I also have other quirky traits, I'm a 34yr old, overweight, Insurance Agent/Soccer Mom who is by a funny coincidence obsessed with a celebrity.  My obsession has caused a few arguments with my husband of 13yrs but he does know I am aware of the difference between reality and fantasy.  He has dealt with my wierd obsessions the entire time he has known me, I have had 8 obsessions in 16yrs.  My previous one lasted nearly 6yrs.  I don't have control of when it will change or if it will ever stop.  I know it's not healthy but I have no desire to stop and I probably won't.  I am however, very happily married and will welcome my 2nd baby into the world next June.  I know this was a long post and congratulations to you if you read the whole thing,  I just wanted to bring to light a few tidbits of a not so obscure but mostly misunderstood Neurological Disorder called Narcolepsy.

I have narcolepsy also, and am so frustrated with the lack of information about it.  There are so many symptoms, and it's more common than people think.  I know a bunch of people who watch the show, and it would help me out a lot if Dr. Phil had a show just about Narcolepsy.  I think my family would understand my disorder a lot better.

We have to try to get a show about it aired.

It would be so helpful.

Narcolepsy!

PLEASE HAVE A SHOW ABOUT NARCOLEPSY.

it is not as rare as people think, and there are so many interresting symptoms.

I feel it would help so many people understand my neurological disorder, since I know so many people who watch the show.

What can we do to get Narcolepsy more well-known???

10/17 Stalking the Stars

Quote From: dbeland

I don't know why so many people are obcessed with celebrities. As for me i could care less what they wear who they date who they love or who they hate. It's time we look at our own lives an stop living through theirs. it always amazes me how women especially scream when they see a celebrity on a show. I would much rather cheer for the every day person. The person who puts themselves in harms way for their fellow man. Real people stand up an take a bow...:-)

Does she have an illness?

Quote From: gregfla

I can't believe there are that many insensitive people out there, and that includes some of Dr. Phil's viewers. Reading "Get a life" or "Grow up" about someone who has an illness like Jenni shows that whoever says those things are the true losers!! You should get a life and call me in 30 years when 'you grow up'!!
She probably does have anxiety or depression or some such disease that she should get help for, but that doesn't mean that she should get sympathy. I feel like she wants attention and she should behave more like a grown woman than a 13 year old middle school kid. She has a daughter and needs to act like a responsible adult. Period.

I know her...

Jenni (the girl who was obsessed with Mary-Kate Olsen) is my nieces mother.  I'm not very close to her, but I knew that she's always been very self consious of her eating habits.  I had no idea it was this severe.  I knew that she was a huge fan of Mary-Kate but not like that!!  None of my family had any idea either.  I'm just speechless....

DR.PHIL PLEASE MEET MY FRIENDS WITH NARCOLEPSY

Seriously Dr. Phil. Contact me. I promise that you will have a fascinating show with intelligent, funny and fascinating people to discuss what you failed to discuss in a meaningful way on yesterday's show...Narcolepsy.
You'd make up for alot of hurt feelings and do a great thing by informing people of this condition that is often undiagnosed for 15+ years. I personally believe that children especially  teenagers would be the ones helped the most, which would be incredible for our the generation.

You can help stop the unnecessary cycle of lost years. Pretty please with stevia on top?!

FYI: I try to stay away from sugar ;)

Charles Schultz ' Philosophy

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of
the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the
questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the
point.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and
actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These
are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But
the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and
special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not
the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most
awards. They are the ones that care.

Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life.
"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already
tomorrow in Australia." (Charles Schultz)

Family Support

Jenni, we love you and will always be there for you.

No one can possibly imagine what another person is going through.  It took courage to speak out about this.

Those who really care will stand beside you.  Count me in as someone who cares about you and loves you and that sweet little one you blessed us with.

Tommy Lee Hazmat suit, ROFL!!

That comment had me laughing, thanks!!  I had a few comments-- I don't remember Dr. Phil asking Jenni why she didn't like herself.  It is obvious that she has no self esteem but why?  She is a beautiful young lady--- I hope that she takes his advice to heart and seeks some help especially for her daughter's sake.  Kids notice everything their parents do and want to emulate them, so Jenni could end up passing on this disorder to her daughter.  It is sad that so many young people think that what they see in the magazine and TV is real.  Celebrities have make up artists, hair stylists, wardrobe assistants.... they don't look like that on their own--- it takes a village, so they say!!  The magazines touch up photos (have you ever noticed that women in magazines never have lines on their foreheads?) Sometimes, it's not even their own body but someone else's.  Photos can lie!

When I was in my teens/twenties, I was extremely skinny--- not because I was anorexic, though.  I never consciously dieted or did anything that caused me to be skinny, just genetics I guess.  But it can be a curse as well, I got a lot of jokes about if I stood sideways and stuck out my tongue I looked like a zipper.  I was made fun of by alot of people, it definitely wasn't something the guys liked.  People tried to feed me all the time!!   When I look at my highschool yearbook, all the signatures in there made comments about me being so skinny.   This was a few years before anorexia got so much attention, with Karen Carpenter's death.  Anyway, my point is that being too skinny is not attractive, it looks unhealthy.  I grew out of my 'problem' after having three children, I finally have filled out in a few places.   I finally think I look good, no more ribs showing or hipbones sticking out.  I like my "mom" body.

Finally, I agree with the people here saying to be happy with yourself!  This isn't about being perfect but learning to love ourselves the way were are.  God made only one YOU!

Why don't we try to emulate celebrities that exhibit good virtues instead of just the outside?  I haven't always been a Dr. Phil fan (my dad kept telling me to watch his show, so I did and now I love Dr. Phil!)  Dr. Phil is a good person who uses his celebrity and wealth to help others.  That's something that people should want to emulate!
