(Original Air Date: 10/19/05) Sexual orientation used to be something kept hidden from family and co-workers, but now more and more people are "coming out" and finding acceptance. Anjela says her mother and sister don't support her sexual orientation, and feel she can't be Christian and gay at the same time. Can they reconcile this touchy issue? Then, two men debate whether a person can go from gay to straight, and parents of a 4-year-old boy fear their son's desire to play with dolls and wear heels means he'll grow up to be gay. Are they overreacting to his wishes to be a princess instead of a prince? Talk about gender and gay issues here.

I dont understand

for those of you that bring religion into this discussion. just to clarify, if my son or my sister testifies that the way they feel is a sin and acting on it is a sin. the fact that they are moral caring loving people doesnt matter.unless they testify its a sin, they are not accepted byJesus and in the Kingdom Of

God?....If charles manson or jefffery dalmer  or a child molester would confess their sins before they died ....then they would be accepted? They would be accepted before my son and my sister because they refused to admit that the life of caring and loving  and morals that they lived was a sin? There is a lot of sin in this world, I cant believe that God holds this as  a priority.

dont you think its how we live our lives.

im only trying to figuer this out beacouse

Quote From: prschuster

Don't you know that the Kinsey report addressed this very issue about 40 years ago. Kinsey found that people can be rated on a graduated scale from 0 to 6. Zero represents complete heterosexuality and six represents complete homosexuality. One through five represent gradations between those extremes. Needless to say, many people fall somewhere in the middle, and a few may actually be at #3 on the scale, where they are evenly divided between hetero & homo tendencies. You see, it's not that easy to pigeon-hole people. So why not accept that fact and leave people be what they are. If someone tells you they are this or that, why not accept their word for it.? Why question it and try to figure it all out, and why judge them about it?

all the gays and bi sexuals are infact the ones making such a big issue about this in the first place and no i wasnt aware of that study,! but for me to understand what i never asked to have to understand in the first place i must sometimes ask what may very well be stupid questions, forgive me for my ingernance, im not hor have i ever been gay, i dont cast stones whear they dont belong but i still ask how can a person be gay if they infact have sex with both sexes? im dam well baffled, all the gay people i have ever incountered in my life time didnt have sex with no one but thear own sex type, thear for making them gay,! and to ferther prove my point !!!!!if i were to go out and have sex with animals what would i be concidered? but keep in mind i still would have sex with women,

Circular reasoning

Quote From: jargreen

Thanks so much for finding this article.  I can't tell you how happy it makes me feel to see people seeking evidence to support their claims.  To me, it is not incredibly productive to hold a debate in which people only shout their religious convictions at one another.  We need to think logically about these tough issues.  God gave us a mind, and we've got to use it!

Now, as pertains to the article, I must point out that NARTH is a very controversial organization that has lost credibility with all the major organizations for psychological and biological health.  This study, too, was in conjunction with a Catholic organization.  Therefore, I fear the results may have been influenced by the deeply held beliefs of the people conducting the study.  But it's a start.

Looking at those results, I think there's some validity here.  The article leads off by claiming that male homosexuality is all about the young man who has poor eye-hand coordination, and thus cannot enjoy success in sports, and thus will feel alienated by other males, and will grow to resent his own manhood, and will finally seek to fulfill the resulting deficiency in masculinity - this leads to his seeking out sexual fulfillment with other men.  Though the eye-hand coordination thing sounds like a real stretch of sanity, the other parts of the argument make sense to me and correspond well with my own theories on male homosexuality, but there are two problems:  (1) Why does that young man have poor eye-hand coordination to begin with?  Did God give it to him?  Is it purely biology?  If this leads to his homosexuality, then isn't God or nature or fate (or whatever one believes in) responsible for that homosexuality?  He MUST be born with it; there is no alternative way of thinking about this, according to the study.  (2) Whether or not he is born with the poor eye-hand coordination, whomever or whatever is responsible for the young man's homosexuality, how does this become "WRONG"?  The only explanation for its wrongness seems to bring in the moral or religious argument.  Science may be able to explain homosexuality, and we should certainly hope that rational, evidence-based argumentation will be used to make an attempt at explaining it, but we must begin by asking why an explanation is needed.  The argument that homosexuality is wrong because it is a perversion of nature - that it is unnatural - is made bogus by this very study; remember that the article kicks off by claiming that homosexuality arises naturally in young men who are born with poor eye-hand coordination.  This particular study - and thanks again for sharing it with this board - seems to have been produced with the hopes of adding scientific reasons for the evils of homosexuality to the moral judgments that this organization, its members, and its sponsors are already trying to make.  Therefore, whether it is a good study or not, we must be skeptical, no?

Did you notice that this study is a fine example of circular reasoning? It tries to prove that there is a defect by assuming that same sex attraction is itself defective. Then they look for a defect (poor hand-eye coordination) to prove their point. What if they used IQ scores, or ability to communicate with the opposite sex, or income levels as criteria? Homosexuality may then come out looking more desirable by those standards. What if the same researchers tried to show how heterosexuality in men corresponded with inability to express feelings, or how heterosexual women had more problems with self assertion than did their lesbian counterparts? I'm not trying to show that one orientation is better than another here. I'm just trying to point out how a study can be skewered to validate the prejudice of the researchers.

morality & legislation

Quote From: amberho

Do you know anything about history?

First off are you aware that the concept of the separation of church and state is no where in our constitution, amendments or law? Did you know that our county and all the freedoms we enjoy was founded on the Bible? The basic law we use to govern our country comes straight out of the Bible. Maybe you haven't heard of it but it's called the 10 commandments. Did you know that our forefathers designed our government based on scripture. We have 3 branches of government -the executive, judicial and legislative. Do you know where that comes from? Isaiah 33:32 says God is our Judge (judicial), Lawgiver (legislative) and King (executive).

Patrick Henry said

"It can not be emphasized to strongly or to much that this great nation was founded, not by religionist, but by Christians; not on religions but on the gospel of Jesus Christ."

The writers and signers of the Declaration of Independence were almost exclusively Christian men. This document was the cornerstone and foundation or our nation.

If these men would have kept their moral beliefs to themselves we would not be the country we are today. Tell me how do you legislate without moral beliefs?

Yes, well, in the days of yore people were hanged for witchcraft, also.  Or forced to wear a scarlet letter for adultery.  Societal laws are in place to maintain safety and order.  Actions of one person which infringe upon the rights/safety/well-being of another are rightly restricted by law; that is, such things as homicide, theft, drunk driving and the like.  Indeed, this would have a certain moral framework.  However, there is a vast difference between state-sanctioned control of the aforementioned behaviors and having the state legislate PERSONAL behaviors - indeed, telling one whom they may or may not marry!  How people choose to structure their families, and what consenting adults engage in between one another, is not my business, yours, or the state's!  These behaviors in no way infringe upon your pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.

And re:the signers of the Declaration of Independence, you left out WHITE men.  I suppose they felt their group accurately represented the population of the time, since the Natives whose land was usurped (among whom were my ancestors)and any slaves would have been considered soulless or certainly too ignorant to know what was best for them. At that time women were not allowed to take part in politics/voting, either!  The face of society has changed (remember the civil rights struggles of the recent past? Dr. King? I do.)   We are a multi-cultural, diverse nation.  No one group has the right to impose their religion-based beliefs on another.  Or are you suggesting that those of us who are not Christian find another place to live?  One can be a moral & ethical person without being a Christian.  I don't lie, steal, kill people, molest children, drive drunk (or get drunk!) etc.  I don't do those things because they are morally repugnant to me, not because any god told me not to with a threat of hell or the carrot-on-a-stick of heaven.  I also don't feel the need to interfere in anyone else's personal behavior.  I believe & live my life as I choose, and give others the same respect.

When enough is enough.

Well here we are again. The Ultimate debate. Right vs. Wrong.

Does it really matter who sleeps with whom? Does it really matter after a long day of work and dealing with world problems and of course our own (and we all have them) to really make the issue of whether a man married to a man or a woman married to a woman really affects our outcome at the end of the day? Really now. There are committed relationships that makes our world - yes the same one that we all live in, a better place.

I am a straight woman, yet to tell the truth it doesn't really matter in the world. It only matters in my little circle of friends and family. Does the person that I encounter at the supermarket really care who I am or who I live with or am married to? Not. They are only concerned with that I have enough cash to pay for my merchandise that I so badly want.  So really now, if it doesn't matter in anyone we encounter daily eyes, why would it matter to the world as a whole. As long as each of us are law abiding and treat people with compassion and understanding, that is all that matters.

Furthermore. I don't believe that I have EVER encountered ANYONE that when brought to the Emergency room denied treatment from the Doctor or Nurse because they might be Homosexual. Or when was the last time you told the Fireman who saved your home from burning to ashes to leave and shut the hoses off because he was Homosexual. Or when we called the police for assistance and told the officer to get lost because he couldn't help us as he is Homosexual? Funny, even the MOST RELIGIOUS of people have yet to do this........I think its about time that we all take the time to reflect on ourselves, Are anyone of us so perfect to judge another?? I know for sure I am far from perfect, yet I strive everyday to be the best I can be, to me that is enough.

I am fortunate for the friends I have, whether they be gay or straight makes no difference to me, as what I look like makes no difference to them. Can we not be all that we can, and not pass judgment on another, until we take the same energy and scrutiny and pass judgment on ourselves?

06/06 "I'm Gay, OK?"

Quote From: jayde287

There may be no absolute scientific proof, but I can certainly tell you from my own experiences that I strongly believe in pheremones and thier attraction qualities. Why do some people smell bad to others, but good to their spouses?

But I do have to thank you for trying to be fair to all:)

Oh I know what you mean. I had 3 girl friends in high school and we all started our period on the exact same day with in an hour or two of each other.  Some believe that is pheremones.

Someday science may uncover this. I was just making it clear that it isn't fact right now.

I saw it on TV!

Quote From: afraid

OK, if you believe in Noah's ark, what credence does that give to any of the other things you say on this forum? Is TV your primary source of information (other than the Bible)? Anyway, what non-biblical facts do you base your views of homosexuality on?

actually...

Quote From: purplepain

To be fair there is no peer reviewed data, at least from what I have ever heard of or found as of a month or two ago when I last looked, on human pheromones.

There is some evidence that there are some human pheromones, or human pheromones type responses in people but it's debated and controversial.

they are widely and for a long time accepted as sexual attractive mechanistic hormones in biology. it helps if you read things other than stupid websites....yah know like scientific journals...that's the problem...no one ever reads actual studies because unless it's huge or controversial, no one but the scientific population ever hears about it.

i blame society and the media.

and Dubya (thanks for cutting the National Institute of Health's federal funding again you jerk!)

I hope you understand

So, I in MY religion, called Kayley-ism, The God and bible that i follow CLEARLY states that all brown-eyed people are "sinning". Therefor im gona follow my  religion because it is the RIGHT ( for NO perticular reason) one and i am going to judge and disrespect all brown eyed people. I am going to tell brown eyed people that they CHOSE to have brown eyes and if they want to enough they can change to blue eyes.

My point being, everyone has beliefs and MAYBE we should all stop and think for ourselves, get over our fears and say wow. the homosexual people are not hurting anyone. Everyone is entitiled to make their own choices and be accepted for who they are. This is absoultely nothing to do with religion. The Chirstian bible also says that its morally wrong to many other things that lots of people just IGNORE. Grow up, and think for yourself. The problem on this show should not have been "is it possible to change straight" it should have been "why does society treat homosexulas in  a way that they want to become straight". and the little boy who played with girl toys? Why is this a problem at all! So if he turns gay? Once again, its only going to be a harder life for the kid growning up only because of all the judgmental people (like his parents) around him. Instead of the homosexuals trying to change, it should be everyone else trying to change.

06/06 "I'm Gay, OK?"

Quote From: afraid

No...LOL, I'm sorry but you are extremely confused. There is no proof of an  Ark and it has not been found. As a matter of fact I saw a show on the Discovery Channel a few weeks about about this topic and it's still hotly debated...(I don't get why...)

I don't want to get too far off topic here but you need to seriously start trying to think more critically and stop believing everything you hear.

You believe that bisexuals are responsible for the way gays are treated. You also believe that there was a global flood and an Ark with two of every animal on it. Do you know that not even most Christians believe that anymore? Did you know that there isn't one shred of evidence that a flood did happen. Did you further know that it's impossible for that to happen. Did you know there there are 350,000 species of beetles...LOL Did Noah catch two of every one?

Honestly, I mean this sincerely. Please be a bit more discerning about the information you accept as fact!
