(Original Air Date: 10/19/05) Sexual orientation used to be something kept hidden from family and co-workers, but now more and more people are "coming out" and finding acceptance. Anjela says her mother and sister don't support her sexual orientation, and feel she can't be Christian and gay at the same time. Can they reconcile this touchy issue? Then, two men debate whether a person can go from gay to straight, and parents of a 4-year-old boy fear their son's desire to play with dolls and wear heels means he'll grow up to be gay. Are they overreacting to his wishes to be a princess instead of a prince? Talk about gender and gay issues here.

Christian Hypocrisy

Jesus didn't gay people but he sure did HATE hypocrites! I see quite a few of them here on this message board. They are people who have become so full of pride and self-righteousness because they worship the bible AS GOD's WORD instead of JESUS as GOD'S WORD. They think by doing so they can get free license to predict God’s mind on EVERYTHING and use the bible to judge others.

THIS IS CALLED FUNDAMENTALISM.  It is hypocritical. WHY?

Because NO CHRISTIAN ever obeys the entire bible. It is impossible. Even Paul said he cannot do it. Read Romans 7:15 to 25. Paul says he CANNOT STOP SINNING! HE JUST CANNOT DO IT!  Therefore it amazes me how religious homophobes pick and choose which sins they want to biblically condemn according to their prejudices, personal comforts and popular opinion. These fundamentalist Christian sects are taking old outdated laws in Leviticus and Paul’s letters to the Christians living over 2000 years ago OUT OF CONTEXT and demanding slavish obedience to them. It’s like Jesus never came and set us free of this kind of dogmatic bondage. Bible fundamentalism results in laziness, literalism, hypocrisy, self-righteousness, complacency and rejection of scientific facts and modern discoveries leading to dogmatic stupidity.

I want people to know that not ALL Christians are like these fundamentalist hypocrites. There are those of us out there who are still fair-minded people who do not impose impossible biblical standards on others when we KNOW FOR A FACT we cannot follow it ourselves. As Christians the ONLY person we are supposed to follow is Jesus. Only Christ is absolute. Christ IS the THE word John 1:14.  To worship ANY OTHER THING as the word of God is idolatry.Fundamentalists insist we need to follow Paul's suggestions as if they were GOD'S LAWS. But do they follow Paul in ALL things? They gloss over the fact that Paul also condoned slavery in Titus 2:9-10 and Ephesians 6:5 and believed women should not teach or have authority over a man in 1Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1 Timothy 2:11-15. Do these sects also follow this? Many of them don't.

The truth is, we are not Paulians, we are Christians. Paul was just a human sinner like you and me, expressing his own feelings on spiritual matters. Paul and his writings are no different than any human priest or pastor today writing today. And just like today, even back then not all apostles agreed with Paul. Peter often disagreed with Paul’s approach and writings, calling them “Difficult to understand” and contain things which the “unlearned and unstable” preoccupy themselves with. See 2 Peter 3:16. IF Peter can disagree with Paul on certain matters and not take everything he said literally, so to can ANY CHRISTIAN. Even PAUL HIMSELF said in Romans 14:5 “Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.” In other words, USE YOUR BRAIN and THINK FOR YOURSELF.

The ONLY figure ANY Christian needs to follow is Christ.

  • Did Jesus say we need to follow anyone's bible writingis to get eternal life? No. What did he say?  See Luke 10:25-37.
  • What is the ONE commandment Christ ever demanded we follow the one that is the GREATEST and fullfills the ENTIRE LAW and PROPHETS? See: Matthew 7:12.
  • Which sin did Christ say is 100% UNFORGIVABLE. Is it having gay sex?-- See (Matt. 12: 31)
  • How is it supposed to FEEL when you are a Christian? Burdensome and self-defeating or liberating and joyful? See Mathew 11:28-30.

If your Christian sect is NOT teaching this as THE CORE of its doctrine and they are placing OTHER burdens or rules on you as Jesus warned some would Matthew 23:4, then they are nothing but Pharisees in disguise. If you are gay and in a sect that is causing you to experience self-hatred, suicidal thoughts, rejection, isolation, etc. then you are not in a religious sect that is following Christ but their OWN fundamentalist agenda.

10/19 "I'm Gay, OK?"

I have followed Dr. Phil since he began on Oprah and this is the first time I've felt compelled to communicate. I don't think the young lady who says she is gay is comfortable with her position, otherwise why would acceptance from her mother and sister be so important. I think she is seeking validation from them which wouldn't be necessary if she were comfortable with who she is. Also, she has not found a partner, but has brought about 30 young women home (if I understood right). This shows me that she is still searching and is not sure of herself. Possbily she is not gay at all but has deeper seated problems that are manifesting themselves in this action.

BOTH sides need to be fair

Quote From: Nepsia

This is my first day using this format. I am shocked at the venom from some of the writers. Why is it that some people think their way is the only way?? I am not gay, but I don't have a problem with people who are. Why do so many people want to tell others how to live? And, further, how is it that these so-called Christians think they know the Mind of God?? "Judge not, lest ye be judged."
I see that both sides are shooting venom. It's a hot topic and unfortunately, people from both sides of the issue get hot headed and emotional, which, of course, causes the angry words and names, etc.  Everyone needs to speak with love or at least with tolerance.  Attacking Christians or Christianity is no more productive or mature (whatever you want to call it) than attacking someone for not being a christian or even for not being particularly religious.

More Christian Hypocrisy

Bible fundamentalist Christians who worship the bible as GOD'S WORD instead of JESUS as GOD'S WORD, insist we MUST follow the suggestions of Paul in his letters as if it were direct LAW for everyone. They do this despite the fact that Paul is merely an apostle, a sinner no greater than you or I. Even he admits he sins continuously in Romans 7: 17-25. His letters are no more than his feelings, experiences and advice. If we are to follow his personal letters to early churches as LAWS then we deny Christ. In addition, Paul said, in Romans 14:5 “Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.” In other words, USE YOUR BRAIN and THINK FOR YOURSELF.

Now here are some examples of the hypocrisy of these bible fundamentalists:

  • Apostle Paul included LYING, GLUTTONY, DRUNKENESS GOSSIPING, FITS OF RAGE and REVELRY among the sins that result in eternal damnation. So how come I don’t see the self-righteous, convenient bible thumpers paying the same kind of special attention to THESE deadly sins they do to homosexuality? Where are the religious rallies outside of gossip magazines? Why aren't Christian conservatives protesting to make over-eating obese people unfit to be parents, teachers etc? Where is the MASS OUTRAGE? After all, only around 6-10% of the population is gay but lying, gluttony, drunkeness, gossiping, rage etc. These are UNIVERSALLY appilcable to ALL people. Seems to me the reason you don't OBSSESS over these is probably because they hit a LITTLE closer to home right?
  • Being gay is not an ethical crime nor anti-social ill. The vast majority of gay people are productive, law abiding citizens, many of them serving their country well. If anything it is just a RELIGIOUS sin (depending on which sect you belong to and how you interpret the bible). On the OTHER hand, something like GLUTTONY and SLOTH which the bible condems in Prov 23:21, Ecces 10:18, Rom 13:13, Phil 3:19 and 1 Pet 4:3 results in over millions of heart related illnesses and death, diabetes, cancer, stroke, financial loss and burdens for everyone, loss of productivity, child hood obesity and early death etc. Where are the Christian protesters. Where is the mass outrage and condemnation of fat people who overeat and will be going to hell according to Paul and other apsotles in the bible?

To any fair-minded Christian who truly follows Christ, these fundamentalist's “biblical” condemnation and  standards are suspiciously SELECTIVE. They claim the bible is absolute holy truth, and judge gay people by it and want the government to cater to their religious dogma when it comes to that issue. But not everything else? How come you don’t want to be held accountable by the SAME bible code in law and all aspects of your life? That inconsistency makes you appear to be hypocrites. If you are going to use the bible in this dogmatic fashion, don't do it just for ONE thing, do it for ALL things.

The problem is, you can't. NO ONE CAN. And that is your pitfall. This is exactly why Jesus said, "Judge not for the same manner in which you judge will be the same manner in which God will judge you." So for all of you who INSIST on strict adherance to your interpretation of the bible, I hope for you sakes you are PERFECT in EVERYWAY in doing the same.

10/19 "I'm Gay, OK?"

Quote From: dbrrtt1

Yay for people like you!  You keep the hope alive for people like me and my partner stuck in the midwest until we get through college!  Its our dream to move to MA and start a family of our own!

I know a m/m couple who are raising two children and they are such a fun family! I always get a kick out of when people say "yeah but when they go to school, the other kids are going to pick on them." Uh, no, it ain't the kids who do the picking! It's the parents. Luckily, the kids accept it as "just another family combination."

Others "worry" about their daughter. How's she going to grow up knowing about being a girl/woman? As one of the dad's said "well, it's not like we're strapping her to a chair to watch football all weekend! She DOES get out for fresh air every now and again and occasionally gets to talk to other girls and women." LOL

boys need to learn nurturing, too

Quote From: trevorsmom

Your child wouldn't be playing with dolls and girl toys if you didn't give them to him or put them out for him to play with. No, I wouldn't love my children any different but I'm not going to put dolls and barbies and other girl toys out for him to play with either.

Someday your son may have a wife, and even children of his own, God willing. He will be a better person for having been allowed to develop his emotional and empathic sides, qualities often associated with the feminine. I know many women who think their husbands/partners could be more emotionally available! I'm not talking about encouraging him to try on your high heels and lipstick, but it seems strange to me that people don't get as worked up about little girls playing with "boys' toys" such as trucks or action figures. A girl who prefers cars to dolls is affectionately labelled a "tomboy," and everyone assumes she will eventually grow out of it. Where is the problem in giving children access to all kinds of toys and letting them explore for themselves where their interests lie?

Friend Gay No More

I have a dear friend who was gay for 13 years, and has now been out of the lifestyle for going on 4 years now.  So, leaving the homosexual lifestyle IS POSSIBLE.  Being gay is a sin, and my friend finally realized that, and he now goes to church every Sunday.  He is a totally changed person, who is actively looking for a woman to marry and have children with.  So, I believe it is possible and necessary to choose to leave the lifestyle if you believe it is possible.

I agree with you wholeheartedly

Quote From: verybusy

First of all are you aware of what eternity in Hell would be like?  I think not, as you have never been there, and exactly what sin am I committing that  I am going to Hell if I don't turn away from it?  I am not gay, I am simply more concerned about my own life than to be judging others, which is not my job anyway.  Is God so overworked that he can't judge as he wishes to?  Think about what you say, and perfect yourself before judging others.

I could not have said it better myself.  I am a straight female who happens to be christian, but instead of using scripture to cast judgement onto others, I look inside myself and choose to accept people for who they are and not how I feel they should be.  A "Christian" should love all people (and that is not exclusive to Christianity, of course, I am just using it because it seems to be creating an uproar on this site) Judgement is reserved for God, not everyone else, and I think he would be less likely to condemn people for sexual preference then he would those who look down on others.  Saying a person is not a true Christian because he/she doesn't agree with the fact that  homosexuality is a sin is equivalent to saying a person is not a true American because he/she doesn't agree with everything our government says.  Come on, now - it seems to be easier for some of you to quote scripture than it is for you to actually live it.

Are you kidding me!

Quote From: cw102358

I found it interesting that the gay man said if it were possible to turn straight, he would have done it a long time ago. No why did he want to? Is it possible that deep down he knows it's wrong and wants to really be different?
The reason being is he wouldn't have to deal with the hatred and being scared of being beaten to death by homophobes.

I Wish The World Were Filled With People Like
