(Original Air Date: 10/21/05) Money is often cited as the number one reason couples divorce. Dr. Phil talks with moms who say their need for cash is causing major problems. First, Andy and Lynn are newlyweds whose marriage is already falling apart. Lynn says she has to pay for expenses that her waitress salary can't possibly cover, and she has to beg her husband if she needs money. Andy says his wife relies on him for everything and he doesn't think she should get a free ride. Can their marriage withstand the pressure? Then, Alice has invented a product that she thinks will make her millions. But after putting in over $160,000 and turning their house into a factory, her husband has had enough. Does Alice have a great invention or should she just give up? Plus, two moms have a dream of opening up their own boutique, but their husbands say they both need a reality check. Join the discussion.

get out of debt

Quote From: werforpsu

wow this is such a reality for most of us.

i just recently broke my husvband of the "MY MONEY" phrase and our marriage is so much better now.  i had him come with me to the grocery store and watch me buy the cheap brands and not get extras.  i showed him that we were not wasting and he finally realized that unless you want to eat Ramen Noodles every day, groceries cost more than $50 a week for a family. cause $100 per week for a family was making him FLIP OUT!!!

MONEY CONTROLERS OUT THERE: stop using my money, your money...marriage is a partnership and a compromise, ask questions for understanding, not for accusing and then decide AS A COUPLE what is necessary and what isn't

believe me (and dr phil) your marriage will thank you for it!!!!

When my husband and I first got married, money was the cause for many arguments. I can safely say that we dont do that anymore. The cure: we made a commitment to get out of debt! We asked God to help us, and boy did we get help! We have successfully paid off the Credit Card, My Wedding Ring, Honeymoon and BOTH Cars!!!! That was about $40,000 in just 10 months!!!  I would have never thought it could be done! How did we do it? First we committed to it. Second, I workded to pay ALL of the bills (At home business) and he worked to pay off debt (Owns own business). Amazingly we dont have anything to argue about! We owe no man!!!!  We are now commiting to buying our first house and I am so excited about it! We can do it knowing that we have NO DEBT!!  I Urge everyone to commit to getting out of debt. It is so liberating!!! AND IT CAN BE DONE!!!  Especially when the Bible says "Owe no man"!!!

To Alice

Alice, I think your invention is a great one and I would love to purchase one :)  I'm surprised that you arent' selling them on Ebay or some other online auction until you can get a store to sell your product.  I feel that Dr. Phil did give you some good tips at the end and I hope you put them in action.  If I can ever get my hands on one I will definitely purchase one.  I wish you the best of luck in the near future on this product and I hope your husband hangs in there for you!

Finally - Some one talks Dollars and Sense

I just wanted to say that I caught the show today and have to say "GREAT JOB!"  Finally some one has come out on National TV to talk about the issues that face small business people and the MISTAKES they make.

I am always telling my clients that they have to do their research and plan.  As the saying goes, "Failing to plan is planning to fail".
Did you know that 80% of successful businesses have a plan?  On the flip side, 80% of businesses that fail have no plan.  There is a reason that banks won't give you a business loan without a plan.

I was most shocked by the Nail 21.  All that time & money invested in product deveopment, manufacturing and package design  without any research or a plan - simply shocking.  I have seen similar cases, but not to that extreme with the amount of  financial investment.  Over $160,000 spent on the product, they should have at least spent $10,000 or $20,000 on market research and sales development.  It seems to me that there is a strong desire to make the product and that there is faith in the product, but there is NO knowledge or understanding of sales.  If she can't do it, then her husband needs to step in and work as the salesman / distributor for the product - he has invested in it, so he needs to help get the money out of it.  They are both at fault for the situation.

In closing, I will say once again, "Great Job!" and I hope the show provided some lessons for other aspiring business people.

Cheers!

Alice,  I too think your invention was great!  You just need to market your product more.  Target nail salons.  You should look in your area for craft fairs and flea markets to get started.  With the holidays coming out they would make cute stocking stuffers.  Look in your local newspapers, schools, churches, etc... for tables. And the tables are inexpensive.  I have done that for my business, its a easy way to get your name out there and meet people.  Good Luck!!!!!!

I was amazed at the drive this woman has. I wish that someone had told them how to better research for her product. I thought that a good market for her would be nail salons. I know that nail techs need their hands free as much as possible. In fact, if her product does start selling it would be good to design one that holds many polishes instead of just one so that the nail techs could change from one polish to another. Don't give up, just find some way to work your product in the market.

A version that can hold multiple bottles is already in the works for a patent.

Nail 21 Product

I wonder if this product is being marketed, even by the two experts, to the right targets.  I would think it should be marketed to the beauty industry first.  There are many stores, some specializing in nail supplies only.  Others like Sally's,  Ultra, Armstrong McCall, include nail products in their beauty supply inventory.  There are also professional nail publications, such as "Nail Pro".   I am a newly licensed nail technician and I would love to try this product in the salon.  Salons also offer related items for retail sale.  I wish that husband and wife all the best.  I personally think they do have a marketable product.  Good luck!

THIS IS COOL FOR ALL YOU STAY AT HOME MOMMY'S

I heard once about a woman who sued her ex hubby for over 2 million dollars after thir divorce saying that that is what it would have cost him to raise their children with nanny's and day care.  so for all you moms out their who are stay at home (or working) and are feeling unappreciated cause you make less, or nothing......think of your yearly salary when you "make" 2 million in 18 years...THATS OVER 100,000 DOLLARS A YEAR.

god bless all the mommy's stay and home and working....you have the hardest job of all!!!!

We do have one of the hardest (I won't say the hardest because I've done corporate America before too!)  I don't think a lot of people realize though.

First of all a lot of people think I'm just "playing on the computer".  It used to really bother me (A LOT) but eventually I got over it.  I just say ... Yeah, and that playing makes me money.  Would you play and earn if you could?  I just don't let it bother me anymore.  Enough people who it really matters to me know what I do.  They may not understand it ... but they know enough that I'm not playing hehe...

I think others think it's SO EASY.  Oh, I can work when I want to (yes, you can ... to a point).  And I don't have to work if I don't want to.  Sure, you don't have to work if you don't want to but if you don't work, you don't get the moolah either ;-)

I do love working at home and I wouldn't give it up for the world.  Although, I do work outside the home 2 days week.  Majority of my income is from my home business.  I love being home for my kids whenever they need me.  But I do work many more hours than I did when I worked full time in Corporate America.  But, the difference now is I'm still here.  I can stop working if my little guy has a boo boo that needs kissed or for me to tell him how to spell mommy.

Working at home was one of the best decisions I've ever made.  I think these women that were on the show today don't have horrible ideas.  I just think they really need to put a lot more thought and A LOT more marketing (Alice) into their plans.  It can be done ... just don't be disillusioned by the "Get Rick Quick" schemes.  There is no such thing as getting rich quick unless you hit the lottery!  You can definitely make a living (I'm living proof) but it does take a lot of hard work, research and dedication.  Being self-employed isn't everyone.  But if you can be self-disciplined enough it can definitely be done.

Okay, off my soap box ... hehe

Nice to see everyone here!!

Take care,
Anita :)

Stay at home mom and a home business

I became a Stay at home mom 5 years ago when I was pregnant with my twins ( Now 4 1/2) I  have always worked and was never used to staying at home so I found a hobby (atleast that is what is started out as) but I fell in love with it. I make Handmade Natural Bath & Body Products and Candles. I love doing it and am always researching new items to add to my line.

At first I would go to Crafts Shows but they got to be to much for me so I started selling on Ebay and I have a website.  I sell all over the world and have made some freinds in the process.

The problem is My HUSBNAD hates it because it takes a lot of my time doing it and always wants me to stop. But I can't!!! I am making money ( I am not getting rich) but I do use some of the Money to buy things we need around the house and occasionally will put some in our joint savings, (Not often enough though) If there is someting I want I can get it without use our Family money to buy it.

My Husband says it has taken over me and our house.

I would love to open a little shop to sell my stuff but I don't think it will ever happen, my Husband thinks that when I go back to work this will all end. I don't want it too, I wish this could be my Full Time job when it is time to go back to work.  People love my products and I don't want to stop making them.

I does take up a lot of my time, and I never was the best House keeper. But my house is not dirty just cluttered.

Everything I make when an order comes  in is made to order so it does take a little more time to get an order out.

So any way does anybody have any sugesstions?

Thanks
