Imagine hearing voices that don’t really exist, thinking lasers are shooting through your walls or believing that people are coming into your home through electrical outlets. For people with schizophrenia, these types of delusions and paranoia are part of daily life. Mary sees angels and demons and has even believed her husband was a demon in disguise. Then, Ann Marie and Tim would give anything to help their mother. She talks emphatically to people who aren’t there and speaks nonsense to her own children. Watch her erratic behavior captured on camera and find out whether her case is beyond treatment. Plus, two sisters, Melanie and Rachel, want to know if their minds could be ticking time bombs. Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Medications

Quote From: psychgal77

First and foremost----------------------PLEASE DO NOT GO TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS for psychotropic medications- anything to treat behavior/mind  i.e. Prozac, Effexor, Seroquel, Paxil, Wellbutrin.. etc.               MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A PSYCHIATRIST in your area.  This is a medical doctor who had ADDITIONAL TRAINING IN PSYCHIATRY to know how this medications affect your body and mind.

Additionally- medication isn't the only answer.   Medication + Therapy = Success

It is important that you are treating the symptoms of the illness while working on  coping skills in therapy or counseling.

Good luck!

I totally agree that you should seek a psychiatrist for these medications.  Antidepressants can cause homicidal or suicidal tendencies in some people.  My daughter was diagnosed with pediatric bipolar disorder and asperger's syndrome.  She is very hard to handle.  Schizophrenia runs in my husbands family and so does bipolar.   My daughter is very paranoid and has a hard time dealing with reality vs. fantasy.  She also has suffered night time hallucinations from as far back as I could remember.  I don't know that she will ever have a schizophrenic diagnosis but she definitely has symptoms.  I have 2 younger children and they haven't displayed any of these things.  It is so important to be treated when you first start having symptoms.    Thanks to Dr. Phil for doing this show.

same as me

Quote From: triciar

I am 33 years old and have 4 children.  They range in age from 16, 15, 13 and 7.  The two middle children are very Special Needs Children.  I have been married for 15 years and have been with my husband for a total of 20 years.  I was diagnosed several times with Depression and put on anti depressants.  They did not work, so I would stop taking them until I could not take the depression anymore.  I would then see my family dr and would get a new anti depressant.  I had my first real psychotic break in May of 04.  It was a very stressful time in my life.  I have had several years of stress with my children being very very ill, but for some reason May was the final straw.  Since then I have been diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder (form of Schizophrenia).  It has been an uphill battle.  Always changing or adjusting meds and the side effects!  I gained a lot of weight because of the meds and the side effect of the meds that makes you tired.  So now I lead a more sedentary life.  I am completely unable to work.  I am currently on Long Term Disability.  It is very hard on my family.  They never know what I am going to do or how I am going to react to something.  I think they walk on eggshells alot.  I have a very difficult time doing anything.  I mostly sit on the couch and watch TV.  This disease is devastating.  It has such a stigma attached to it.  After being diagnosed and realizing the stigma, I accidentally came across a sweatshirt hoodie that is bright orange and in black letters on the front says Psych Ward and has a number.  I could not pass that up.  It has broken the ice more times than I  can count.  I don't know how many people at my dr's offices have said they want one too.  To me it's saying I have an illness and I'm still a human being....treat me as such.
i read your letter and as oprah says i had a "A HA" moment.Im 31 mother of 2.I have been told im bi polar and am on prozac and seroquel. For years ive dealt with depression, anxiety and such.Since taking the meds ive began feeling paranoid.I feel like people are seeing me thru my windows. As like you im completely disabled by this.I too mostly just watch tv. I have so much guilt. I sometimes cannot cook or clean and cant do laundry.I have a 3 year old with autism and i keep thinking hed be better off if he was adopted. I never knew other people felt like me. It makes me feel better knowing i am not the only one.

Thank you dear and wonderful Mary!!!!!

Quote From: stryker_m

I am the one with schizophrenia on the show.  In response to your post, I got sick when i was 18.  I had my first full psychotic break then.  I was unmedicated for years struggling with this disease, self medicating with alcohol and running the streets.   I was not medicated at all for anything when the schizophrenia started. I will wait for the show to air before sharing any more.  I'm sure the show will cover alot of what I might say here.
Dear Mary, Your courage helped so many, I know you helped me. I lost my only child in 2002 to this tragic illness. You can view his website at www.crylo13.com John was bright, handsome, loving and unfortualtely emtionally wounded from a tragic molestation by his stepbrother when he was elelven years old and was living with his Dad and his montster stepmother. After that nightmare John slipped into a depression. At age 18 he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He did not like the medication. Four years later his depression increased and suicide claimed his life. I praise your efforts in coming forth to help the popuation understand this illness. I wish that I understood more when John was still alive. Thank you very much, Elizabeth P.S. The young man who molested my child has been employed by the first Methodist Church in first shreveport, then Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I send countless emails to the church that employs him, warning them that he is a sxual predator. Last I heard, they continue to employ him. His name is Quinn.

really seeing demons and angels

Some Dr. Phil viewers may disagree, but does anyone else agree that this poor woman may truly be seeing demons sent by the devil and angels sent from heaven?

If you really think about it, it completely makes sense that these demons are ruining her life. I believe that Satan does send demons to try to lead us away from Christ. These psychotic episodes are causing her to divorce her husand, attempt suicide, drink excessively, believe that her son and husband may try to kill her...wow, if that isn't veering far, FAR away from Christ, I don't know what is!

I believe that these demons may truly be real, and not just psychotic episodes and delusions, and that the angels may be reminders sent from heaven that God is stronger than the devil and indeed are showing her that she can overcome these monstrous trials!

Warmest Prayers to you

11/23 Schizophrenia

Quote From: psychgal77

What part of schizophrenia HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPIRITUAL WARFARE don't you understand?   I am a strong, dedicated, Christian woman who holds a Masters degree in Psychology along with having had a parent with Schizophrenia.   I understand that people can be "possessed" but that is NOT SCHIZOPHRENIA.  Yes- those diagnosed with this VERY REAL MENTAL ILLNESS suffer from hallucinations and delusions which often focus upon religious beliefs.

Please do not help the PROBLEM...... continue to support a falsehood- have some compassion- These individuals are NOT posessed- have demons inside of them, nor need an exorcism.

They need a well educated psychiatrist whom cares enough to take the time to spend more than three minutes with each patient to determine which psychotropic medications would most benefit the individual.

Please get educated.

God Bless!

Christie

I do not think that victims are possessed or need an exorcism, I agree with you on that.

However, I do think that demons and angels are ever-present and are always here to either lead us away or towards Christ.

schizophrenia

I can totally sympathize with the brother and sister that appeard on the show today.  My wife was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder in the 1989.  He first psychotic episode happened on December 4 1989 after I had done the groceries.  I bought a ham and she thought it was a human heart.  Later that month, she began to say that I was not her husband, that I was an imposter.  This led to a diagnosis of Capgrass syndrome.  She was put on medication by a psychiatrist and her illness was controlled for many years.  She led a normal life, we had a child and she held a regular job as a teacher.  I could see in the late 90's that symptoms began to reappear, again she did not believe that I was her husband and she started to hear voices.  Since she was still on the same medications, her psychiatrist decided to try the newer atypical ones.  They did not work.  Her life began to turn for the worse.  She was in and out of the hospital for years, her psychiatrist could do nothing for her.  He then suggested that a stay in psychiatric insitution would be appropriate as she could no longer function at home.  It was with a heavy heart that I consented to this.  My wife Maryse, then spent the next 18 months in a closed psychiatric hospital that was an hour away from our residence.  I will never forget this time.

At the hospital, they stopped all of her meds in order to properly diagnose her, they then started to reintroduce meds to no avail.  There was one last ditch medication that they could try, clozapine.  She began to respond to this medication and slowly, I could she an improvement.  I visited Maryse two, three times a week.  We began to have weekends together, but I could see that she was not the same person that I married, IQ tests suggested that she was mentally deficient.  In the 25 years that the chief psychiatrist of this institution has been practising, he had never seen a case like hers.  Sadly, in June of 2003, Maryse took her life leaving behind a 12 year old son.

I know how the brother and sister feel, I was there.  I tried for years to get her the best medical help possible.  It was not easy.  It is so very sad to see Maryse live with this inhuman mental disease, it took away her dignity.  I hope that they find the help that their mother needs but they must also get support from others, be it from family members or from community organizations.  This disease affects more that the person that has it, it affects all they are close to the individual.  I wish them the very best and may God help them throught this journey.

Faith

Quote From: sedison

It is my understanding the most demon possession is extreme. She is not extreme at all and knows what is happening in her head. She is in control and knows what is happening. Demon possession is not being in control and being unable to control the events as they happen. Either she is VERY able to control everything or she is actually schizophrenic. Meds or no meds. I have absolutely no faith in "Demon Possession!!"! God gave us "free will" it is our minds, not anyone elses and most "possessions" are to help in some way. Demons have been banished to earth , they are earth bound. They influence you in the here and now not spiritually.. or in your mind. Faith in God does not always cut it! Faith does not heal all.

Faith does not heal all? To have Faith in God does not mean that we will be immediately be "healed" of our injuries, diseases or sicknesses.

To have faith in God is to know in your heart that His Will will be done and that you will be saved in the end.

Shame shame..

It can ruin a family.

Forty some odd years ago my mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia. It damaged our family for some time. She was given 25 shock treatments and came home not knowing her oldest child. I was devestated. She went through many prescriptions to no avail. Help was extremely  limited. She had to commit a crime before she could be hospitalized for her safety and ours. For the longest time I lived with the fear that I was next. I now know that my fears were unfounded and Our family has finally managed to put her illness to rest. Mom passed away 3 years ago and is now finally at peace. What doesn't kill you will certainly make you stronger. Families that try to inform themselves of all possible treatments for their loved ones and themselves will be better off.
