(Original Air Date: 11/30/05) Dr. Phil's guests dare their loved ones to finally try something new -- and last a day at it. A father wants his high-maintenance wife and daughters to learn to love the outdoors and try one night of camping. When Survivor's Jeff Probst shows up with their first challenge, will the girls pass and earn their camping supplies or will they head back home? Next, Melissa was the first person fired by Donald Trump from this season's The Apprentice. She says she can't work with women because they are intimidated by her brains and looks. What does Dr. Phil think? Then, Lauren's parents challenge her to last a day working in the real world, so she can see how hard it is to earn all the money she spends. She says it will be easy, until she sees where she has to work! And, Samantha is in her high school marching band, and says her football-playing godfather always tells her, "Band is for sissies." When she challenges him to strap on an instrument, will he be able to keep in step or will he march to the beat of his own drum and change his tune? Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Lauren's Fun

Quote From: shrimpety

My impression of Melissa is that she is a snob. Who is she to decide who is "bright"? I work in an industry where many of my co-workers have two PhD's, are physicians and none of them treat people the way Melissa does. I think Melissa has a warped self-image and she relies on her peceived intelligence to make herself feel superior.

as for Lauren, I agree that her mother has overindulged her and that she is now paying the price (literally) for not teaching her daughter limitations. I wish that they would have sent her to work at a job that was more realistic for her, such as an entry level position at an ad agency where they pay very little and the person does a ton of work nobody else wants to do.

Lauren you're fun. You really only care about herself because people who value their education would never act like you.  A degree is concrete knowledge not tissue paper.  All I can say is two things 1)good luck honey the spirit poor house is calling to ya' and 2)you're degrees better be from prestigious schools (if you know what I mean. ;-). People like you take themselves far too seriously. What kind of work ethic are you passing on to the people you love? There's more to life than prestige.

Oh, putting Dr. Phil on the spot probably not the brightest thing to do that was worse. I can't believe that girl act the bug!! Good for her.

Hi Alteaon!

Quote From: alteaon

I can't believe that spoiled girl who wants  a  lexus! It could be how I was brought up, but I've never been impressed by brand names. I'm not sure if her day on the farm is going to get through to her as much as when she doesn't get stuff that costs nearly as much as my rent for free! A purse for 350.00? That's gotta be one damn fine purse, indestructible. Heck, for that price, it should come with money.

I agree w/ Dr. Phil that it's not all her fault, she was brought up this way, spoiled rotten. SHe has no idea how hard it is to earn money.  It may sound very sheltered of me to say this, and it may be the truth, but I never knew people like that existed aside from Paris Hilton, and Simple Life esque television shows.

I am 27, and have paid for my own vehicles, gas, ect for my entire life. My parents helped me out when I needed it, and since then I have helped them out when they needed it. Its what family does, and part of what family is about.  True, I do have some nice things, like my truck ( used), and my rings I've rec'd as gifts. I do not mind paying money for something of quality, something I really want and am willing to work for.

I just don't get it that people can be so materialistic. They are insane to give a girl that young a lexus. Imagine the insurance on that thing? The insurance payments alone would be more than what most people have as a monthly car/truck payment.

Where am I going with this? I don't know, more or less venting, and using this show as a primer on what i do not want to instill in my future children.

...

On the topic of the jock godfather and his band god daughter. Having been in band for many years, I was always made fun of and teased for it. I can be athletic, but I do not enjoy team sports. In my experience, it's way to competitive with in the team itself and not the team working together. Not all athletes act the way that the godfather did on the show, but many of them do. It's a bad stereotype, but it does have some truth. I'm glad that he changed his tune ( pun intended). It was definitely a flashback to watch that segment, and it makes me wonder how many people who made fun of me still feel the same way about band people. Sports can be very taxing, both mentally and physically, but so are many other persuits.

Boy! Do I agree!   Right-on, right-on, right-on!  I am 50 and appreciate your candor and common sense for 27 yrs. old.  Love your comment on the $350.00 purse!  Keep on pluggin'  From Susan.

Dr. Phil dropped the ball

WHY OH WHY did Dr. Phil find Lauren and the way she was raised so amusing? On past shows, he's likened such poor parenting to child abuse, yet he laughed right along with Lauren and her poorly guided parents. They have sent this child VERY BAD messages about life and what's important.

What lessons have they taught this girl? No work, but expensive bags, clothing, trips, shoes and possibly cars? Why is this shallow girl not giving back to her community...spending time and money helping out at a soup kitchen, in an area food pantry or donating items to the Salvation Army? Imagine how many people could be helped out by a $350. purse alone!!!

These parents have taught this child that brand names matter (sorry, a cow is a cow and people pay for status, not usually much higher quality). They have taught her that life is easy and people should give things to her without them being earned. How terribly sad and irresonsible of her parents.

This is a girl who will HAVE to marry wealthy to keep up her status that her parents so sadly introduced to her instead of teaching her what is REALLY important in life (and it ain't fancy STUFF). I pity her husband, unless he's the type of man who simply wants a "kept," beautiful woman as an arm hang. Those marriages usually end in divorce.

Our children attend private school yet they help out a Metropolitian Ministries, they take trips to Appalachia to stock the food pantries, they donate monthly to an area Catholic Charities and I insist they go with me every 3 months to watch me donate blood (so they'll be comfortable doing it themselves when they are old enough to decide/donate). They own 3 pairs of shoes, one winter jacket each year until it's outgrown and two stylish but inexpensive purses. It is OUR RESPONSIBILITY (as parents)to model appropriate behavior...compassion, unselfishness, kindness, etc.

Do they really think that Jesus, if he were on this Earth walking beside us, would be pleased with the lessons this child has been taught and the life she's been allowed to live? Jesus didn't care about STUFF. We shouldn't either!

I Thought.......

all of the people taking the challenges were good sports.

However, I wasn't really impressed with the arrogant snob that was on the Apprentice.  "I'm prettier and smarter than anyone else"  Is she an adult or is she in High School??!!

Different Generations

I think that Lauren's attitude about her entitlement to so many things is sadly the attitude of most kids her age right now. My brother in law is 18 and seems to have the same attitude. They want to do less and get more for it or else they would rather not work at all for ANYTHING! My brother in law said to me just last weekend while we were visiting, "I hate Sundays!" I asked why and he said, "Because I have to do stuff for other people." On Sundays, he has to pick up our 89 year old grandma, bring her to church with all of us, and then go to lunch with the family. He drives my in law's Cadillac Escilade and doesn't pay for insurence or gas or anything. My in law's do make him work a little around the house like helping out with mowing the lawn and cleaning his room, but a lot of the time my father in law ends up mowing the lawn for him and my mother in law cleans him room for him! My husband wasn't given the same treatment growing up and so was taught to work for things. He was taught that if he worked for half of what something was worth, then his parents would help with the rest. I, on the other hand, had to work for EVERYTHING I ever wanted.

I think that having to work for your things gives you a better appreciation for your things and a greater sense of value. I also think that now because of what is shown on TV especially MTV, teens think that the other kids lives shown on the shows are normal and that everyone is entitled to have expensive things. They think that if they don't have a lot of expensive things, they won't be seen as cool or popular! It's a little worrisome to me.

I think they should of sent Melissa to either a retirement home, or a fast food resturant.

I think her working in a retirement home would make her wake up and appreciate the things she has in life vs complaining of what she wants but cant have..

I thought it was great that they did that challenge, I myself. lol I dont think I could do that.. So i applaude them!

I dont think the snob from the apprentice was pretty or smart. I think her attitude made her one of the ugliest people i have ever met.. If you stop and think about what she was saying she made herself look pretty darn stupid.. And she wonders why Donald said " Bub Bye".

Too many lazy children

A great majority of children these days wouldn't survive a day if they had to live like our grandparents did. If they had to get up at four in the morning to milk the cows, feed the pigs, gather eggs from the chickens and then eat breakfast go to school then come home and help on the farm I don't think they would make it past the getting up part. Children today are lazy and spoiled. They have the computer to play on all kinds of play station and xbox games. They don't even want to get outside and play anymore. It is no wonder there are so many obese children. The TV has become the babysitter. It is a shame.

OMG

Melissa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! people are turned off by you not because of your self proclaimed beauty or smarts, they are turned off  because of your personality! trust me on this one. Beauty comes from the inside out.  There is a glow about a person when they are kind, compassionate and intelligent. I love being around people like that, they make you feel good when your in their presence. I think people feel judged when they are around you, and really who are you to judge? I saw the apprentice show and you had no spark, just dull and you seemed very dark and dismal. If you were so smart and gorgeous wouldn't have I noticed you in that way??
