(Original Air Date: 12/12/05) You may have heard, "If something is too good to be true, it probably is." Dr. Phil's guests learned this lesson the hard way. Sandra thought she was marrying a bachelor with whom she would spend the rest of her life. What she didn't know was that she was being conned, and that when she tied the knot, she would be wife number seven! See what happens when Sandra and wife number six get together. Why is Dr. Phil concerned with the way they are coping with their pain? Then, when Coni met Paul, he claimed he owned a business, had a Ph.D. and was an Air Force Major. But the life he detailed was all a big lie. Now that Coni has put her husband behind bars, she fears he's plotting revenge. What does Dr. Phil think? Plus, a former FBI profiler shares the signs to look for so you don't become a con man's next target. Talk about the show here.

Count me Conned

I was totally taken in by my a neighbor who became my employer.  He became like a son to me or so I thought.  I was only one in his long line of victims.  He was an insurance salesman, dealing with individuals, groups, etc.  It's a sad story really. He was a really dynamic guy with incredible sales ability.  All the hundreds of thousands he gained through his smooth talking ways went for sex, drugs & rock and roll.  He abandoned his wife & family that we all thought was his world.  Where he is today, I have no idea.  Last I knew his ex wife and kids don't know either.  I know in my heart that they've lost way more than the $25,000 he got from me.  As with other people we would expect to be ugly evil looking monsters, Con artists are literally the people next door, wolves in sheeps clothing!  I've been able to shed the stupid, gullible feeling in knowing that I'm not alone.  I'm a good hearted, caring person that got taken advantage of.

My Ex-Con Artist Works 4 A Newspaper

I'm amazed he still has a liver not to mention a job.He lied to all his employers that he had a 4 year college degree when he only attended a Jr College in Philly for a few weeks?Months?I never got a straight answer.

was a twenty-somethng girl from a small town & he'd already been arrested in several states 4 DUI,drug possession, not paying traffic tickets, suspended license, etc. He even used my name(this was over twenty years ago) to order books and other merchandise.he couldn't b/c(he claimed @ the time, his mother ripped off book & record clubs and didn't pay her credit cards)

He used to preach to me about "the importance of high moral standards" while he was having sex with males, doing drugs and getting stinky drunk every night after work.I was also told how "fat" I was.He was overweight before I met him,yet he blamed me for his big belly.(couldn't be from drinking a six pack or more daily along with several shots of gin b/c beer didn't get him drunk fast enough)He told me that the food I buy and the way  I cook made him fat.As if he had NO control over what went into his mouth.

He already lived with an openly gay guy from our hometown. Now he works for the daily paper here in the town where I live.I hear he is back with mother(another con artist and excuse maker) but he is searching for some desperate woman.

Warning a huge, white male w/ excess body hair and poor hygeine .If you go to a bar, you'll never get his ass off the stool until they close. He's almost fifty & usually deep in debt.Amazing all the reporters and educated people who work for the paper haven't caught on.

Checking someone's background

My daughter (22) is currently living with a con man who is 43. We know little of his background.  They have lived together for two months. This man stole her father's credit card and used it. I think he has a criminal past. Does anyone know what online background search is reliable?
The worst of this situation is that my daughter has a little boy (3) living with them.

All men are not losers!

Quote From: flthomcat

Please stop insulting men. You generalize and our prejudiced. All men are NOT the same.

In my cirlce of friends and co-workers (etc) most men are great guys, just as most women are great. It all depends on who you allow to occupy space in your world. I CHOOSE not to be around losers. And I have been married 17 years to a SUPER guy who adores me and our two children. God and family are tops on his list of accomplishments and I know other men (married to friends of mine) who are just as wonderful. And we are raising a son who is a super, bright and compassionate child...who will one day grow into a great dad just like his father!

You remind me of some men who say that all women are the same....all we want is money. ALL generalizing and stereotyping is WRONG, so please don't go there.

My feeling is that you have made choices in your life that got you the results  you saw. Life is mostly about choices and consequences. Just because yours have not produced the results you feel you deserve doesn't make ALL guys the same!!! It should make you look harder at  yourself in the mirror.

Yes, I totally agree with this response. Sometimes, events and consequences create the person. Truly, do we know what is in someone's heart. Well, not to sound like a shrink. Really, I agree choices and their outcome. One, I believe has to believe their gut feel. You, know the old saying. "If its too good to be true?" right. So, I am glad that both sexes have been positively portrayed here. Honestly, no one is to blame. Nowadays, society pretty much dictates our being.

Conned

As a grandmother watching  Dr Phil show on predators on the Internet I became concerned about my grandkids having space on myspace.com. So I signed up in hopes to be aware of who talks to them, little did I know I would be the one that needed to be concerned about WHO is contacting ME,a grown woman, been around the block, thinking that I know whats going on! Yeah right well the first day I signed up with myspace I got a nice IM from a gentleman, we chatted for a few weeks and I enjoyed the interest he showed in me. DUH should have been a red flag (no not that someone could be interested in me) but that it happed so fast . Well after long chats and complements I started to feel that there could be romance after the loss of my soul mate over a year ago. He listened to me complain one day about my car trouble and asked me could he send me a card to cheer me up, I said sure and gave him a post office box #. I know its something to never do.But I'm a grown woman !!!! This man sent me a cashers check in the amount of $5000.00 and asked me to go ahead a cash it and if I could be so kind and send half to his brother. He said he was in TX,the check was from a Bank in Hawaii, but the post mark was from RI. I went on line and found a 800# for the bank and called them and sure enough my benefactor was indeed a con-artist. I have been in contact with the bank and if I would have cashed the check it would have been a felony and I would have been responsible for the full amount of the $5000.00. No way to tract this man down, but he has tried to contact me again thru myspace but with a different name but with same picture .

conned and still hurting

I'm a classic 'low self esteem' female.  We are so easy to fool.  The fellow that hooked me was a master of  lies.  He hooked me with an art for listening and knowing the right thing to say.  At 40 and recently divorced with enough money to keep him drooling, he reeled me in.  After he had spent every dime I had the abuse started.  Boy, was that a wake-up call.  To this day I rue the day I met him.  I worked full time while doing all the house work, watered 120 acres on his farm, planted, plowed, painted his house inside and out, and managed to save enough money to move far enough away to never come in contact with him again.  He dislocated my jaw twice, treatened to tear my head off and shove it down my throat because I wasn't strong enough to hold the tractor tire up while he put on the lug nuts!  I was so afraid of him that I left while he was at work after $15K dollars and many lessons were learned!  I just hate the fact that I would still like to get even and take the cancelled checks I was fool enough to write and shove them down his miserable throat.  He always said, " I'll pay you when I sell the crops in the silos".  Oh well, I am older and much wiser now.  A sucker is born and her name is Sue

ALSO TAKEN BY A CON MAN

I MET MY CON MAN ON LINE JAN. 2003. HE IS PUERTO RICAN, AND NOW LIVES BACK IN DADE CITY, FLA. I AM A SINGLE PARENT OF A 15 YR. OLD SON AND WE LIVE IN CHARLOTTE, N.C. HE ALSO WAS A VERY CONTROLLING MAN AND EVERYTHING THAT CAME OUT OF HIS MOUTH, I RECENTLY FOUND OUT WAS A LIE. HE TOOK ME FOR EVERYTHING I HAD BUT WHAT WAS WORSE WAS THAT MY SON HAD TO SUFFER AS WELL. I HAD A BEAUTIFUL 2400 SQ. FT. HOME WITH A POOL AND HOT TUB THAT WAS PAID FOR WITH BLOOD MONEY I HAD RECEIVED FROM AN ACCIDENT I HAD SUSTAINED WHILE WORKING AS A PARAMEDIC IN FLA. TRYING TO SAVE A MAN'S LIFE. SHORTLY AFTER MEETING HE TOLD ME HE WAS HAVING FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES AND NEEDED SOME HELP. HE MOVED IN WITH US APRIL 03 AND SHORTLY AFTER HE CONNED ME INTO TAKING A MTG. ON MY HOME. BIG MISTAKE. AS LONG AS I WAS GIVING HIM MONEY HE WAS PAYING HALF THE PAYMENT. HE WENT OUT BEHIND MY BACK AND BOUGHT HIMSELF A $25,000 SPORTSCAR AND HID IT FROM ME FOR MONTHS WHEN HE WAS GETTING READY TO LOSE IT HE HAD ME PUT THAT ON MY HOME AS WELL. I BECAME ILL EARLY 2005 AND HAVE BEEN OUT OF WORK SINCE THEN. AFTER I STOPPED GIVING MONEY TO HIM HE LEFT US IN SEPT. 05. I HAD NO JOB AND COULD NOT WORK. THIS PAST JUNE 2006 WE LOST OUR HOME AND WE ARE NOW IN A RENTAL HOME. I STILL HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET BACK TO WORK BUT I'M WORKING REAL HARD ON IT. LUCKILY I HAVE MY RENT PAID TILL JAN. 2007. HE ALSO HAS A DAUGHTER THAT WAS 3 WHEN HE MOVED IN WITH US THAT I HELPED HIM RAISE FOR 3 YRS. HE IS RETIRED MILITARY BECAUSE OF A CON HE DID ON THEM AS WELL. HE ALSO COLLECTS S.S. DISABILITY FRAUDULENTLY. HE DOES NOT HAVE A DISABLED BONE ON HIS BODY. I HAVE ALSO REPORTED THAT TO THEM AS WELL AS THE VA. DEPT. OF DEFENSE. HE TOOK ME FOR OVER $80,000. I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT I ALLOWED TO HAPPEN TO US AND HOPE HE DOES NOT DO THIS TO ANYONE ELSE. I DON'T KNOW HOW HE SLEEPS AT NIGHT. LIKE DR. PHIL SAID ON THE SHOW HE IS A COWARD LIKE ALL THE REST OF THEM. HE IS NOT A MAN, MEN DO NOT RUN FROM RESPONSIBILITIES. I LOST EVERYTHING I HAD AND HOPE I CAN GET WELL ENOUGH TO GET BACK TO WORK BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. SO WOMEN BEWARE OF PUERTO RICAN MEN THAT LIVE IN DADE CITY, FLA. AND GO BY THE NAME OF JORGE. HE'S REAL SMOOTH.

Anti-social diagnosis

Did anyone pick up that one of these guys was diagnosed anti-social?  That is a sociopath. A psychopath.  All these guys are sociopaths.   No conscience, no empathy.  I am disappointed that Dr Phil calls them con-artists, not what they really are. He missed the meat of the story.

I, too, was head over heels in love with a sociopath and it took me 8 years to figure out just what I was living with. I made so many excuses for his behavior and wanted to believe he was the person he pretended to be.  After much research and counseling, I was able to accept the fact I was "conned" and got out.  It is a life changing realization.  I thought only serial murderers had no conscience.  Well, surprise surprise- it is estimated 1 in 25 of Americans are sociopaths.

A good book to read- "The Sociopath Next Door" by Martha Stout.  It will open your eyes.

Also, I highly recommend researching Narcissism and the support groups on MSN.   These personality disorders and sociopathy seem to go hand in hand.   Google it.

Wishing all you victims of predators continued healing.

Questions aren't enough these days

Quote From: jeanne191

Don't give up.  I was by myself for 5 yrs after my husband died.  Join a fraternal organization, church, singles groups.  Play Bingo! Do not, I mean Do Not stay home by yourself and brood.  Go to a exercise class, or maybe a senior center, volunteer and do something for someone else.  You cannot meet people if you don't get out.  You have to trust your judgement and do not take people on face value, give yourself time to know a little about them.  Ask questions, where do they work, what do they do for hobbies, do they dance, drink, go to church.  The more you know the better judge you will be.  Besides it lets them know you are interested in them.  Good Luck
I asked questions, lot's of questions. Most of his answers were lies. Asking questions isn't enough these days. When you first start dating, go on the internet and get all the information you can. Make him give you the name of his employer and make an excuse to call him at work to verify that he really does work there. Take him to lunch and meet his co-workers. Within in a few weeks you should be meeting his friends. Talk to them, everyone loves telling the new kid funny stories. Get them started with stories about him. Talking to people that he knows will paint a much better picture of his personality. This works even with an honest guy, who might not be able to describe himself well. If he doesn't want you to contact him at work and/or refuses to introduce you to his friends; he throwing up a big red flag.

conwomen

Hello all,

I watched Dr. Phil and 20/20 today; both shows had stories on conmen...

I am compelled to write to you because both shows portrayed men as conmen and I would like to bring to your attention the women who prey on innocent and good men.  I am aware of one woman who has done exactly the same and uses her sexuality to lure men in, conveice their children and take their resources.  She has done so across Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and now Idaho... Please do equal justice and consider the women who do these things to innocent and well respected men!!
