Do you believe that walking under a ladder or someone giving you the "evil eye" can give you bad luck? Dr. Phil's guests say that curses and evil spirits are wreaking havoc in their lives. Sarah is convinced that she's hexed. For the last five years, she has been plagued with what she calls the "Tuesday Curse." Watch what happens when Dr. Phil's producers follow her around on her "unlucky" day. Then, George is convinced he is reaping the negative effects of a curse put on his family years ago in Mexico. He has even put his wedding plans on hold because he fears the curse will cause him to divorce! Plus, David worries that his wife, Holly, may be possessed because she has had the same nightmare for the past seven years, and she has been talking in a man’s voice, speaking in a foreign tongue and barking like a dog. What's behind her fearsome dreams? And, a woman claims an exorcism, performed by her father 26 years ago, put demons inside of her.  Share your thoughts.

It's true and it's real

I believe in demons and curses because i was once a victim, i never new until i got into a serious relationship wih GOD. but i thank GOD for his mercy. And since then i just knew as much as i know my name that i was free. it's very real and there are spiritual forces in this world we don't see but i tell you they are there, and believing it or not won't changed the fact that it's true. I'm a believer of jesus christ and one thing i'm sure of is that in him is liberty from anything.

Physical reasons for posessed behavior

My daughter and husband have grand mal epilepsy (both under control and seizure free for many years, thanks for  wondering).  The disease that  Jesus cured by putting the spirits possessing a young man into pigs which ran off a cliff.
This is a brain disorder  which  can be very frightening for the onlooker especially if they have had their heads filled with exocism movies or  uninformed religious  teachings.  The  person  can make all kinds of  weird noises and  jerks.
Some seizures come in the night  and at first I thought  Dr. Phil was going to tell the women with the sleep disorder to get a medical check up.  This is also a good idea for  involuntary  noises(turets),  panic attacks(diabetes), odd behavior (tumors),  rhythmic or out of it behaviours in children ( autism, epilepsy).
I guess I am taking Dr. Phil to task for not mentioning getting a medical check up when posession seems the cause.  (But I hate to do that, I don't want to be on the show!!!)

BTW, never put a spoon in an epileptic's mouth, turn them on their  side and clear the space of pillows and obstructions.  If the seizure lasts more than 10 to 15 seconds(It will seem waaay longer) or they have never had one before, call 911.

01/05 "Am I Cursed?"

Quote From: saganka

I have had nightmares/terros as long as I can remember, lately they are more often and I sometimes can tell it's a dream but can't do anything about it and wake up screaming and only know for sure I'm awake when I can hear that my screams have awakened my two dogs.  I try pleasant music, no scary TV, what's left?  I am exhausted from trying to sleep because I'm so afraid of these almost nightly occurances.  Also notice if I awaken early am like 4:00 and fall back asleep I almost always have another nightmare.  The themes are generally about horrible things happening to loved ones, used to when younger always dream of being chased with intent to harm me by others.   Help.  Thanks for listening.

From the time I was a small child I also had night terrors where I felt I couldn't move and there was an evil presence surrounding me.  I used to sleep with a light on, or sleeping on the couch seemed to help until a friend told me to start praying.  I prayed to Jesus, every night, for about a month, and one night I felt this peace wash over me.  After 30 years of being afraid to fall asleep I have not had this experience since.  This was 15 years ago.  Until I saw the show and saw this topic I had completely forgotton that this used to happen to me on a regular basis.  There is help, and it can go away....I have lived it and survived....

A perfect world

A friend once told me that "We live in a perfect world..." I was taken aback for a minute and opened my mouth to dispute the idea when it hit me; he was right. We live in a world that we have created with each and every choice we make. People often ask "If there is a God, why does he allow suffering?" God tells us plain and clear; WE allow ourselves and each other to suffer. Even if we take the God element away and forget about good and evil, we have these chemical bodies that thrive and exist on the highs of addiction. The addiction is different for each of us and the addictions CAN be changed. Nobody said it would be easy.

Personally, I have suffered from Night Terrors from at least the age of 3. I remember dreams like they are memories. I talk and scream and cry in my sleep; i've had God cast out demons in my sleep; i've prohesied in my sleep on several occassions. I also have the worst "luck" of anybody I have ever met. I've replaced the tires on my car 4 times this year, I've been dumped several times, cheated on, talked about... but you know what? I realized that no matter what comes my way, it is my reactions that matter most. Life doesn't give us more fat than we can chew...even when we think it does. When love becomes unconditional, we set ourselves free. People often think that they have this bad luck, they give and give and give and never receive; but often we love under contions. I give to my friends. I give to my family. As it says in Matthew 5:47 "If you are kind to only your friends, how are you different from any body else?" Try taking the skin off of your back and you WILL be rewarded.

To those of us that are "cursed" I offer the following advice:

1) love unconditionally...learn to appreciate those you may find annoying

2) love yourself...if you don't find yourself worthy of accepting love, then you are telling others that they are not worthy of accepting it either

3) tell yourself out loud and make lists and tell others of the things in your life you DO appreciate. It's a learning process, but you WILL appreciate things eventualy. If you don't learn to appreciate the small things, then EVERYTHING will seem like a curse

4) don't be afraid to seek medical attention! wether that be a Sleep Dissorder Doctor, or a therapist...find out if something medical might be wrong

A great movie came out this year called "What the Bleep Do We Know?" I HIGHLY recommend it. It's an awesome movie and it touches on the topics of our existance on a spiritual level as well as a scientific level.

Also, I recommend the book "Blue Like Jazz; non-religous thoughts about christian spirituality" by Donald Miller. Coolest book ever, it's a must read especially for non-christians. and NO its NOT a "become christian" book.

take care kids :)

Hey there Linda....

Quote From: spirtiled

My dear,  You are deceived not I. The Bible is real. I pray God opens your eyes to the truth!!!  I was instantly set free of bondages, and have prayed and seen other set free also. I have been filled with Gods Love and Peace and no matter what you say, you can't take that away. Let me tell you that miracles are happening in record numbers and unbelieving Doctors are receiving Christ as a result of miraculous healings. If that is a fake, I'll take it, even though I know it is not. I know someone who died and was in the morgue for four hours and knew God but walked away from Him. She died of pancreatic cancer and went to hell. While there she saw many sreaming, don't come here it's terrible. Though she realized she deserved hell, she cried out to Jesus to save her and said she knew she deserved it but was sorry, and for Him to save her. Angels then brought her to Heaven where she spent the rest of her time dead. God told her she had to go back and tell everyone she came into contact with the truth of her death and being in hell and Heaven to carry her death certificate with her documenting her death. Also she was legally blind and has 20/20 vision, and runs seven miles a day. While in the morgue with a toe tag on her, in body bag, she came back, and was saying I don't want to come back Jesus! and the orderlies heard her and unzipped the body bag and she spent the following six weeks in intensive care as she had no body fluids, etc. Alos her organs were eaten up by advanced cancer and she is completely restore. All of the Doctors and nurses and aids that witnessed this documented miracle, got saved, meaning born-again. Having asked Jesus to come into their hearts. You don't have to believe, God gives us free will, however, you can't deny the testimonies! Linda

I fully agree with you, Jesus and the Bible are real and I'm a full believer.  I think you misunderstand me.  I am saying that there are pleanty of deceiving people out there who desire to use the "idea" of a curse in order to manipulate and frighten people, and gain psychological controll over others, which may "feel" alot like real demon posession, but is really anxiety, depression, and so forth.  I don't deny that there are real demonic forces out there, but I think it is largely over-sensationalized, and just wanted to share "how" psychics do things, and "how" some of the bad ones use the "idea" of a curse to manipulate and spiritually abuse.  Not only psychics, but some Christians out there as well, like the young lady's father, who, no doubt was brain-washed into believing that everything he saw was "demon posessed" - he used exorcisms to gain mental controll over other people, including his children and messed them up. In this way he claimed "special spiritual knowledge" much like psychics claim to have, believing and teaching that he could "sense" presences that no one else could see or feel.  In this way he took false authority over thers inorder to controll them, keep them in a false spiritual system, and spiritually abuse them and teach them to abuse others as well.  How many pentacostals out there are shouting "demon possesed" from every corner?  I'm never going to find out, as I won't go to a pentacostal church - ever.   The catholic church got caught in this loop back in the 1500's and has since refrained from declaring anyone demon-possessed and "up for an exorcism" without extensive psychological evaluation.  While they have finally got their smarts on, the rest of Chrstianity is finally catching up where they left off and we have fanatics running around declaring everyone out there "demon posessed".  It's happened to me a million times at church, specifically when a fellow christian wanted to claim authority over me to get me to pay in more, work harder, give up a coveted position to them, or become "more obedient" - sorry, i'm not falling for this "i'm more spiritual than you are" gag.  I've even been told by supposed christians that "I have the spiritual gift of discerning spirits...." - ya right,  What discernment means is the ability to make a decision, and you do that by learning what the Bible teaches and then making a rational decision - that's discernment.  And what spirits do you discern between? Between the Holy Spirit, whose teachings you should know if you read your bible (nothing miraculous there), and spirits that tempt you to do immoral things the Bible teaches against - you don't need any special spiritual equipment to use common sense or to read!  Alot of Christian people need to get over their pride when pretending to display these artificial spiritual gifts in order to gain one-upmanship over others.  Psychic readings?  A SKILL you can LEARN like math or piano.   So are the spiritual "words of knowledge" you hear about on TBN and in radical churches - the whisperings of the spirit and so fortth! YOur feelings, and what mode of spirituality you actually tap into?  Your own God-given talent at your natural inner intuition, but science can not prove anything beyond that.  You believe in God, but other faiths have the same experiences, both good and bad...It is your faith in God and helping others that is the genuine gift to other people in need.  So I'm just saying "watch out for Spiritually Abusive frauds no matter what religious institution you step into, Pentacostal, Southern Baptist, Catholic, Buddhist, Jewish, New Age, or etc."  I think many American people do not know the "facts" about how a psychic reading is done, and do not know the "facts" on spiritual abuse, or that it can happen to them in their own "neighborhood" (congregation).  Wolves wearing sheeps clothing are among us in all groups, not just "the other group."  I hope you receive this well and in the spirit of Christ's love, as I do  not discount your experiences, I am just saying some people out there deliberately deceive and frighten in order to spiritually abuse and controll the innocent.  That's all.

spiritual warfare

I completely agree with one of the messages sent.  If you are not under god's protection then this type of warfare is not very suprising.  I can only hope that people seeking help and information concerning dreams, attacks, or any disturbing experiences will seek to find the truth in the right place.  I know there is alot of people who don't beleive in god or there are just some individuals that aren't sure, but if you seek him he will answer and he has not given us fear and has given us the power to overcome any evil when we truely beleive in him.  I f you are serious about getting help, please consider trusting in our lord jesus first and pray that god will enter your life giving you the wisdom and knowledge you need to overcome what you are going through.  If possible try to find a church in your area that baptises in the name of jesus, ask them to annoint your body and pray for you and your loves ones rebuking and casting satan and his cohorts out of your life forever more in the name of jesus and please consider accepting god in your life because only then through the power of jesus christ you can take control over your life and situations and stop being tormented.  I felt I needed to send this message to anyone who will listen and consider my advise because I have been in a very similar situation, and ever since I accepted god in my life 1 year ago I have no longer had the tormenting dreams and experiences that were occuring because I have learned how to pray and beleive god is real!!

01/05 "Am I Cursed?"

It's truly fascinating just how strong an influence symbolism, archetypes, and mythology have on the human psyche. This is why these folks will need more than a counseling session, in my view.

The "lower part" of the brain that thinks in terms of archetypes and raw emotions cannot be "talked" to on a purely rational, analytical level---at the end of the day, if the subconscious and/or the "reptilian" mind believes in the power of crosses, hexes, demons, mirrors, black cats, or whatever else,  those symbols and concepts will still captivate and influence even an individual who is normally "rational" or "skeptical," on some level, in some way. (It's why people who were raised in a religion can still be captivated by its symbolism or rituals even after rejecting it as an adult, and it's part of why people can get so shaken up by scary movies: the same factors are at work.)

So, it's not enough to tell these people that they're dealing with coincidences, or emotional trauma, or schizophrenia, or confirmation bias, or any number of natural factors like these, because such explanations don't make contact with the "lower brain"---and, in some cases, you won't convince the "rational mind," either, if people themselves are fully convinced that they've been demonized, hexed, or what have you.

But, folks in these situations do need help of some kind, because I do believe that one's expectations, habits, and beliefs do indeed influence life events, luck, and the like. You get what you "ask" for, basically. If you go looking for trouble, you'll tend to attract it, and then once it arrives, you'll dwell on it. These people will continue to have flat tires and bad Tuesdays for as long as some sizeable part of them--be it conscious, subconscious, or both---believes that those things are inevitable and fated.

It's outside of Dr. Phil's jurisdiction, of course, but what these people need is to participate in some kind of specially-tailored religious rite wherein some "priest" or "shaman" removes their bad luck or demons and bestows blessings while invoking the religious symbols, ritual elements, and ideas that appeal most strongly to the participant. Such a rite could potentially "reprogram" the participant's psyche so that they become convinced--subconsciously as well as rationally/consciously---that the supernatural threat has been removed. Then, after the fact, the people should receive psychological counseling, and should be coached on effective cognitive psych techniques and methodology that'll help them deal with and understand their fears, problems, and supernatural pessimism.

Night Terrors

Quote From: saganka

I believe I have night terrors because some nights they are worse than nightmares.  I wake up with pains in my forehead and am terrified, sometimes it feels like I bang into my own chest.  Does this make sense to anyone?  On rare occasions, I see in the dreamstate, myself get into a position and rise up into the air to either escape something awful or just because.  I've done some reading, especially fond of Sylvia Browne and think I might sometimes be doing astral travel.  This is all still frightening to me.  Any advice?

I believe that Holly, or anyone experiencing a dramatic or sudden change in their health, should go to a Neurologist and have an evaluation or better yet an MRI of the brain.  My late husband started acting out his dreams early in our marriage.  It was very difficult to sleep next to him because he would become violent, hitting, yelling, kicking etc. Often I would be the one to receive a hit or kick and he wouldn't know he had done anything until I mentioned it the next morning. A sleep disorder clinic suggested separate beds, but offered no help with the disorder.

He was diagnosed with a degenerative brain disorder, Ataxia about 10 years after the dreams started.   I belonged to an on-line support group and posted a remark about him acting out his dreams.  It brought an overwhelming response from others with Ataxia that had the same problem with acting out their dreams. Usually it's the bed partner that knows more about the condition, than the person dreaming.  I'm not a doctor or an expert in anything, but because I lived with his condition for 18 years I feel that there was definitely a connection between his dreams and his brain deteriorating.

Cursed?

Dr. Phil,

I am so glad that during this show you took the position of keeping religion out  by simply stated  your own opinion.  I would like to propose two things and one may seem out there to some but where I come from they are pretty real...

1. "Thoughts are Things."   It is true in this world that if you maintain a positive outlook and I don't mean being a Pollianna out there, but if you maintain a higher up beat attitude, life in general not only moves more freely but it actually seems happier.  If it is driven with negative thoughts about everything, from how you look at life, what's on the evening news, to how you interact with people in general, then it tends to attract negative people and events to your life.

2. This is the one some would consider being "OUT THERE", but it is my opinion that we don't just live one life but many and I believe that we carry certain things that are left unresolved from life to life.  I would actually be interested in hearing the opinion of the Dr. that you had on today, after all of his research with so many Shaman's and Spiritualists.  I've got to believe that at least some of them recognized this idea.   Through regressive hypnotherapy, many people have been relieved of these issues going on in their lives.  Many of these issues, manifesting very real emotional and very physical manifestations in this life.  It is also considered a phenomeonon of Cell Memory.

Thank you for the time.

child has 'spiritual' prob instead of medical...

I watched todays show and can see how ppl believe these things. I grew up in the South where religion was a MAJOR part of ppl's lives but they were also very superstitious. I'm superstitious but just out of habit and not real belief (spill salt, throw a bit over the shoulder type thing).

My oldest son has always had some issues, colic, separation anxiety, etc. It went downhill fast in 04 when he was 3 yrs old. The 2s were a dream compared to the nightmare that his 3rd yr became. He was always an emotionally fragile child, lots of anxiety, nightmares and frequent night terrors. He started having periods of extreme anger lasting a wk or more, then go into depressed phases where he would cry at the slightest thing, didn't want to leave the house, etc. In Nov it all came to a head and he went into mania. He was literally hanging from the ceiling, hissing, throwing food, his voice changed, his eyes changed, it was very scary. We talked to his dr right away, saw psychologists, psychiatrists, family therapist, neurologist and neuropsychologist.  One night I called our base chaplain just because I was overwhelmed with 3 kids 3 and under, a manic 3 yo and no help in sight. I just needed someone to talk to at that moment that wasn't involved in the situation. Well, he says that because ds has nightmares that there is a monster under his bed scratching his back and then has these unexplainable severe mood swings that there is a DEMON bothering him and wants us to bring him in to lay on hands!!!! Now I'm all for praying for God for comfort, peace, those types of things but we do not believe in that. We had already had him baptised in our own Episcopal church and didn't feel a need to have an exorcism was really necessary for our 3 year old! I explained that we were seeing drs that were concerned due to prior illnesses, possible birth trauma injuries, etc and he says that to him this is a 'spiritual' problem and NOT a MEDICAL one!!

In the last 15 mos we have taken him to many drs, had an MRI and EEG done, had IQ and psychological testing done. Right now he is seeing a very good play therapist who has worked miracles with him. He is now able to somewhat control himself, no longer has rages/mania where he tears the entire house apart but still has very obvious mood swings. His current working diagnosis is early onset bipolar disorder (strong family history on both sides and is consistent with his behavior), auditory processing disorder, sensory integration disorder, and possible PDD-NOS (high functioning atypical autism).  We have been working with these diagnosis for 6 mos now and the changes in him are truly dramatic. There is a lot of debate about bipolar in children, but I know my son, I've tracked his moods and it is what it is no matter what you choose to call it. We've also worked on his auditory processing issues, he will be 5 next month and can finally count to 10, can say his letters to E, but is still unable to memorize a simple nursery rhyme or song. His therapist has worked with him on his anxiety and anger too so he will be starting in a normal preschool this fall. We still have probs with his mood swings and at times he is out of control but he is WITH me now and not disappearing inside himself like he did before. We now know that social settings cause him great anxiety so we take him to quiet corners or the bathroom to recharge. We know that sometimes he CAN'T control his emotions and actions and we no longer try to 'control' him. His cycles are pretty consistent and trying to control them makes it worse for both of us. He is not on medication right now but will be starting some next wk. It was a hard decision for us to do this but seeing how far he's come without it I know that it will help him to go even farther.

I just wonder how many children out there suffer from autism, sensory issues, and other psychological issues and their parents turn to religion instead of doctors Sensory issues can cause rages and manic-like behaviors because they need more or less stimulation but don't know how to get it. Some kids need extra pressure, like weighted blankets or vests, others enjoy swinging or jumping. Sometimes normal noise is too overstimulating, they are very sensitive to clothing, things in their environment. Kinda like being claustrophobic or in a room where everyone is screaming. For them it is overwhelming. Or they might have language problems, where they have probs processing information or expressing themselves. They get frustrated and lash out. Nightmares and terrors are due to stress, such as school, potty training, changes in the family, parental stress, etc. In my son's case he doesn't know, he just says he's scared. I have noticed that his anxiety and night disturbances have dramatically decreased since he's been in play therapy. He has never been neglected or abused, he's just very sensitive to things. If he is dawdling along and we say  'come on or we're leaving you here' he'll have nightmares that we've abandoned him somewhere. That's just him. Oh and let's not forget that food sensitivities and allergies can lead to these symptoms too.

I can't count the number of times that ppl have said maybe we should just take him to the church to get 'cured' since we've gotten him diagnosed. It makes me sad to know that there are children suffering out there, not getting the help they need because their caregivers take them to 'lay on hands' instead of investigating possible causes. Can you imagine how scary this is for a child? The second lady on today's show is a prime example of how this can put ideas into their heads and cause MORE problems. The last thing I wanted was for my son to think the devil is living under his bed!
