Do you believe that walking under a ladder or someone giving you the "evil eye" can give you bad luck? Dr. Phil's guests say that curses and evil spirits are wreaking havoc in their lives. Sarah is convinced that she's hexed. For the last five years, she has been plagued with what she calls the "Tuesday Curse." Watch what happens when Dr. Phil's producers follow her around on her "unlucky" day. Then, George is convinced he is reaping the negative effects of a curse put on his family years ago in Mexico. He has even put his wedding plans on hold because he fears the curse will cause him to divorce! Plus, David worries that his wife, Holly, may be possessed because she has had the same nightmare for the past seven years, and she has been talking in a man’s voice, speaking in a foreign tongue and barking like a dog. What's behind her fearsome dreams? And, a woman claims an exorcism, performed by her father 26 years ago, put demons inside of her.  Share your thoughts.

01/05 "Am I Cursed?"

Quote From: lgotwalt2

I watched the show today about the curses/hexes, etc.  I believe I may be 'cursed', but not do to emotional problems.  Back in July, I awoke with strange mark on my chest.  I showed my friends and family members, nobody has ever seen anything like it.  I showed it to a doctor (not mine) and he thinks it was from a button, but that is not the case.  See for yourself.  If anyone has any ideas where I can get an answer, please advise.  I wish I could blame it on emotional problems or think positive, but I don't think Dr. Phil would know either.  Thank you

I have looked on the internet for this sign and can't find one. The closest one was an anchor with a snake. Ours loos lik it has a heart in the middle. Does it.? It's hard to see it up close enough. It is not a button. I doubt it. I will look further to see what I can find.

An Answer....

Quote From: stuffedcat

I don't believe in curses or possession, personally, I believe in psychology and the mind's flukes. Granted, I do recognize that sometimes unexplainable things happen and I -am- open to understanding that religion -can- be correct but we can't really know for sure. For now I rely on more earthly reasoning for what goes on. Now that I got that disclaimer down I'll get to the point:
I have problems believing in curses and possession - possession especially - because of what I think a false belief in it can do. I spoke to a friend of mine about some problems I myself have (my family has a history of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depression and I have reoccurring 'problems' that could be categorized under any of those) and he understood and said that he has some of the more violent problems, but that he believed it to be caused by demons. Now, I understand that him and his family are all very heavily religious, but we have also talked about his childhood which included abuse, abandonment by his father, and the need for him to pick up parenthood for his two little sisters. When I pointed out that he obviously didn't have an easy childhood (I had realized that he had some depression problems by this point and I spoke to him unheedingly, thinking he'd understand because at the time he had been looking into psychology) he refused to talk about it and said that the Christian thing to do was to forgive and forget. Unfortunately, it seems that all he's tried to do is forget, and I know first-hand what suppression of something terrible can do to someone. Now he's plagued with depression, terrible nightmares, and on occasion he even 'sees' things (but mostly when he's just coming out of a nightmare). I tried to suggest multiple times that he see a psychiatrist but he won't because of the religious answer he's deemed his lifesaver. Granted, this hasn't helped him at all, and I worry about how the degenerative aspects of certain mental illnesses will effect him in the future.

Him and I don't speak anymore because when he gets depressed he becomes manipulative and lashes out at people close to him and anyone close to the person he's targeting.

I would really appreciate knowing if anyone with an objective view can enlighten me on this. Psychologically speaking, what could his problem be? Any insights would be wonderful, thanks.
This is my objective view of your post.  It certainly is noble of you to try and help your friend, and shows you are a caring person to worry about his well-being.  I myself am also extremely interested in psychology, and obtained a bachelor's degree and continue to read psychological journals and text books, with a strong interest in the clinical area of psychology.  I currently work as a special education teacher.  However, with all of the knowledge I believe I have, I am definitely not qualified to give advice--that could only come from someone with at least a Master's Degree in clinical psychology, and who was also being supervised by someone with a PhD, or of course from a Medical Doctor specializing in psychiatry.  I remember in college one of my favorite professors who actually specialized in treating people with schizophrenia through psychotherapy, he was brilliant--he studied at Harvard and Yale...but he cautioned us that in learning psychology,  things you learn will sound like you in a way, or one of your friends, and to never try to interpret your friend's dreams, because "you will scare the bloody hell out of them."  In other words, it takes years of intensive training to be qualified to treat or help someone, and the person has to commit/consent  to the evaluation and treatment.  Your friend is resisting your suggestion to see a psychiatrist, and you did your duty as a friend by expressing your concern.  Many times people with mental illnesses are in denial about any difficulties they are having because they cannot be objective about themselves perhaps, and also sometimes their overall insight is diminished.  (If in fact your friend is suffering from any mental illness).     You stated you made your suggestion clear repeatedly, and that it was met with resistance, so as a friend, I would respect his choice to "forgive and forget," even if you do not agree with him taking a religious view point.  I hope that helps.

Hi Terri,

I am sure that you are an intelligent and responsible person, but why do you have to leave this country to see any of the proverty you reffered to???  If you are an american an live in the United States, then you are severely mislead to think that everyone here has all the stuff you say we all have.

Visit any Native American Indian reservation of which there are over 500 in the United States alone, and you will find proverty at it worse.  I should know I live there.  Poverty, suicide, murder, drugs, and a multitude of other evil things reside on the reservations.  We are America's biggest kept secret and even most Americans are unaware of the truth out here.

So tell me about being poor, having no hope, being pushed down till you are already 12 feet under when you are born.  Come and visit, visit I say because there are very few who could survive out here and most probably yourself.  Take a chance though and check it out.

Whispering Eagle

Dear Whispering Eagle,

Firstly, I think you missed the point of what I was trying to get at, which is, stop, take a look at what you have and this country is very wealthy.  And now in reply to your statement of being poor, being a descendant of the Cherokee, which most of my dad's family still live in Oklahoma, at the end of the trail of tears, many of my dad'sfamily do live on a reservation.  Secondly, I have almost been homeless by the age of 5, my family had no food, and yes we were helped by people we didn't know and couldn't repay.  I know about hand-me-down clothes from other peoples children and I was happy to have "new clothes" from them.  I could survive poverty, alcoholism, physical abuse, I watched my mother beaten many times.  My mother, my sister and I had run away from a very bad abusive situation only to be found and brought back.  So, please, before you make a statement about being pushed down and not being able to survive, know the person you are speaking to before you put your foot in your mouth (so to speak).

I am sorry that you took such a negative view of my thoughts, I was just trying to remind people, stop whining and take a look at all the good you have in your life.

Sincerely,

Terri

01/05 "Am I Cursed?"

Quote From: tcduffy98

I am sorry, but what does living in the U.S. or anywhere else in the wolrd have to do with being cursed or possesed?  There are still starving and homeless people right here in the U.S.  and I don't think they feel very blessed.  I am from South America, and have also lived in Europe and now here in the U.S.  and I can attest to the fact that especially in South America, the idea of being cursed is very real!  And I don't believe that people who claim they are cursed necessarily did it to themselves, that is a very closed minded statement to make.  I've seen people who were church goers belived in God and Christ and experienced evil/curses anyway.  I personally experienced some evil occurences as a 9 year old child, and I was going to Catholic school and attended church 3 times a week, and I didn't ask for it to happen to me, nor did I do it to myself. So, unless you have first hand knowledge of such things, you shouldn't be so quick to judge!

Claudia

Dear Claudia,

Apparently you didn't finish reading my entire message.  I stated that there is evil out there and you can be affected by it.  I am a Sunday School teacher, a liturgist and a lay speaker in the Methodist Church, so I do have some knowledge regarding evil, dark spirits and the like.  I have seen what evil can do to people, to churches and the complete destruction of peoples lives.  I have also studied and researched for a long time on evil, the devil, Heaven, hell, angels, demons, salvation, etc.  So I wasn't just shooting "from the hip" with regards to my thoughts.

As for living in the US, I was pointing out, that this is a very wealthy nation and most people complain and whine about nothing and are not thankful for what they have.

So, I hope this clarifies my earlier statements.

Sincerely,

Terri

what to do?

I wrote in a previous message that I got help from a psychic, let me mention briefly that I had to do things that I thought were primitive.  Being educated, I was shocked at what I was told to do, but I followed the instructions and the entire process took approximately 3 months.

I asked my psychic if she could help me when I heard for the second time that someone had put a curse on me. Briefly, she said she could but I had to do things and, of course, money was involved.  My thoughts were when one is dealing with primitive people, one has to do primitive things.  So, I did them.  Some frightening things happened to me, I even ended up in the hospital, having been mugged.  The mugging only intensified my belief that I needed to get help and that I had to follow her instructions to a "T."

A miracle happened in the midst of all of these things that frightened me to death.  I thought I was having a heart attack I was so frightened, but I learned as I was told that evil couldn't hurt me anymore.  Finally, I reread the New Testament from beginning to end and a moment came when I heard in the gospel of John, Jesus speak to me from the page.  He said, "Up to this point, you have been asking God for things, now ask God in my name."   Again, I was frightened to death, but after that moment things became normal again.

Another person who I know was introduced to a support group of other women who have had curses put on them by there mothers-in-law.  There were 6 women altogether.   We all had to do similar things.

If anyone wants supports for his or her fears, I suggest you find a good psychic, reader, who believes in God.

01/05 "Am I Cursed?"

Quote From: janemitche

Epilepsy IS NOT caused by demons and neither is GRAVES DISEASE.  Neither are chicken pox or avaian flu or cancer or a host of medical diseases.  Is this board  in the year 2006 or the middle ages?  If  you are sick go to a doctor. If you have a mental illness see a doctor who will refer you to  the proper specialist.
As for the  man and the demon pigs. The symptoms are classic grand mal.  I have no doubt Jesus cured him, but  He also was in a time when people knew nothing about the body  and disease, including even no idea of the existance of germs. Besides, He was making a point about his divinity, which is why the writers of the gospel, who also knew nothing about disease as we know about it, told the incident.
Prayer has a place in healing but God can't help you if you don't help yourself. by seeing a physician.
I totally agree with you that diseases such as Graves Disease or other medical diseases are not demons but that doesn't mean that someone cannot be cured from them supernaturally either.  I have heard and seen "mircles" in my own life.  I had a friend with inoperable brain cancer who was suddenly healed.  Her doctors were stunned.  We had prayed for her for a long time and I believe in God and His healing power.  Now on the other hand, I have a son with cerebral palsy and autism that I have also prayed for and have not received healing in that case.  Now about the case of demonic possession in the Bible were Jesus drives the demons out of a man and into a pig, that man was not having a grand mal seizure, I think you have your stories confused.  In this story, Jesus and his disciples cross the sea of Galilee and when they arrive, a man who was possessed with many demons runs up to Jesus, bows at his feet, proclaims Him the most High God and asks not to be sent to the abyss, so Jesus sends the demon called "legion" meaning many into the pigs who immediately run down a steep embankment and drown in the sea.  This man was speaking, and bowing, not having a seizure.  Afterwards the man was cured which terrified the heathen living in that land and they immediately ask Jesus to leave.  By the way, Luke was a physcian and would have known what a seizure was, maybe not how we know it but he would have described a seizure as at least the man shaking and foaming at the mouth.  Not the case in this story.  Good try though.  By the way, there is nothing in the Bible that states "God helps those who help themselves".  This is a quote from Benjamin Franklin, not the Bible.  I do believe God has given wisdom and science to us to help us and we should seek out that knowledge and help when we need it.  Take care Shannon

01/05 "Am I Cursed?"

Quote From: dmscott65

Speaking in tongues a spiritual gift given by Jesus Christ (Mark 16:17, 1 Corinthians 12:3-11) so that the ones that are in Him will have the power to communicate at any time.  People that are not spiritual gifted can’t speak on this subject.  The flow can be from God/Jesus to man, man to God/Jesus or form man to man.  The language can be a known language or an unknown language or a combination of the two.  Or it could just be stuttering our utterances.  All of this depends on the level of the gift and to whom the person is speaking to at the time.  Beginners (lower level) may make utterances, etc.  Higher level people can speak in a language very fluidly at will.  If the person is speaking to God/Jesus directly then the language may be unknown so it will be a privet matter, even from the devil.  If the tongue is meant for people to hear, it can very well be in a known tongue.  I state it that way because there is the gift of the interpretation of tongues also.  So if a person is speaking and there is a person with the gift of interpretation around, that person may understand what is being said even if the tongue is unknown or even if the person doesn’t know the language (tongue).  I speak very fluidly in all tongues and I was able to understand all tongues before I was able to speak in them.  There is much more to this and other gifts.  And yes, evil people/spirits can speak in tongues also.  I am the prophet of Jesus!  The Lord be with you!

I understand what your saying as a fellow prophetess of the Lord. But you said your "the prophet of Jesus", there are many, being one of the callings in the five-fold ministry. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. I  understand the gifts and how they operate, but to say low level is confusing and prideful to those who lack Spirtiual maturity.  Keep it simple or you'll loose them. Also I have been used by God to see people set free and also be baptised in the Holy Spirit and some flow instantly  in tongues, get interpretation of tongues. I have even seen instant transformations, where one minute they are angry, and the next at peace and prophesying! I've prayed for one who said one word only over and over, but began to know things with incredible accuracy, names, dates, details, etc. And mind you, this happend right away!  So in summation, there are no hard and fast rules, it all individual, but one thing remains the same in all, there is always positive evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the evidence of tongues. Always!!!

Blessings, Linda

Wickedness and principalities

Babbsey,

It is impossible to discuss curses and possessions without spirituality.  I know Dr. Phil stated that he does not want to lean towards religious aspects, however this topic generates such a discussion.

I am believer of my lord and savior Jesus Christ, and I have experienced demonic forces trying to gain entity into my own being.  Well, what am I saying.  I am merely stating that the world we live in has a continous spiritual warfare going on.  Yes, I do speak in tongues as the Holy Ghost give utterance, and no, I am not cursed and will not be possessed.  What one must understand is that attacks come from the enemy of the believer, and possession can only take hold if you do not have discernment or you are completely unaware that wickedness and principalities exist.  It's in the Bible.

As far as a spiritual symbols such as crosses,  are concerned the only protection one has against demonic forces is to denounce the spirits in the name of Jesus, for he is the only one capable of protecting man.  Trust me I tried them, and the only thing that works in covering of the Blood.

Demonic forces need a physical being to house in, in order to operate with full capacity.  Working on ones mind and/or thoughts are influential  and appealing to one's individual weakness, but possession will have you act un-Godly.  God has divised an escape from such forces when he arose up from the grave.  Why do they attack, ignorance, spiritual elevation and God's truth.  Ignorance, because evil is always present trying to devour whomever,  spiritual elevation trying to distroy God's plan for our salvation, and God's truth, because the devil is just mad at knowing he losing another soul.

My advice to people who have experiences with demonic forces is to find a praying spiritual group, fasting,  and to hold on to God's holy promises.  You have to try the spirit by the spirit.  Remember- God never gives you more than you can bear.  The devil needs permission to attack God's chosen people and it's only a test.  Show the enemy who you believe in and trust me he will flee.  You may be able to help another soul in a similar situation down life's road.

Don't ever stop praying, He'll answer you.

Luv

Babbsey

Quote From: kitrinka

I'm wondering if anyone has checked to see what medications Holly may be taking.  I suffered from horrible nightmares every night for 3 years until I figured out that it was my blood pressure medication causing the problem.  I checked with my pharmacist who confirmed that that particular drug could cause sleep disturbances.  Since my medication has been changed I don't have bad dreams anymore.

thats a good idea. she should check into that.

01/05 "Am I Cursed?"

  ::bangs head into wall::

Ugh, if I see ONE more post about religion I'm going to scream.  How is that actually helping anyone with their problem?!  I'm so sick of people saying "If you have a problem you should pray about it."  If praying makes someone FEEL better than sure, go ahead, but don't EXPECT miracles in life, you'll just be disappointed.

We need to bring this topic back to the matter at hand.  What can WE do to help these people?   How can our experiences help others.   This doesn't mean evangelizing or preadching about why prayer does or doesn't work.

If prayer worked for you, then great that's all you need to say about. If it didn't, then that's all you need to say about it.   We don't need the bible quotes and all that so some people can "prove they are right".  How about sending links to support groups, Dr.s , therapists, to these people so they can get some help?
