Charlie, a self-described racist, struggled with the fact that his daughter was going to have a biracial baby. His insensitive, hate-based thinking tore apart his family. After speaking with Dr. Phil, he agreed to spend some time learning about African-American culture. How did he do when Dr. Phil set him up to live with a black family for two days? And, Dave grew up believing he was white, but found out the family secret when he was 26 - that he was actually biracial. In an effort to heal the pain of being deceived his whole childhood, Dave went public with his story, with disastrous consequences. How can he heal and move on? Plus, Cene is biracial and says her mother accuses her of acting "too white." Should Cene have to choose a race? Share your thoughts.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/12 Racism Experiment

Quote From: my_2angels

"BLACKS SHOULDN'T BE COMPLAINING BECAUSE THEY GET AWAY WITH MURDER, LITERALLY. THEY RAPE SOMEBODY OR TRAFFIC DRUGS AND THEY GET OFF SCOTT FREE."

Actually, if you've looked into the dynamics of the prison system at all, not only are blacks LESS likely to be found innocent for murder, but they are MORE likely to be put on death row. They are also less likely to be found innocent for other violent crimes, which is why there are more blacks in our prison system then whites.

As for the "all black shows and school," I don't know which school it is you're talking about that is "all black," but the reason that there are "all black shows" (which isn't even true, I've never seen  show that is all black) is because there ARE shows in which there are few or no black people (hello? anyone ever seen Friends or Seinfeld?) and the shows on t.v. that DO have few black people in them aren't targeted towards blacks. Therefore, tv networks started up shows that are populated with mostly black characters (Girlsfriends, The Parkers, The Bernie Mac Show) to try and reach this target audience as well. It has nothing to do with racism. Your comments are ignorant and uneducated, period.

The only black people that I've ever heard cry racism (when there was no racism) were uneducated black people. Just like the only people who I've heard say "All blacks do is cry racism," seem to be uneducated. The Rev. Jesse Jackson cries racism because it gets him put into the news. (You know what theys say- No publicity is bad publicity.) He is seen as a powerful figurehead in America, especially to blacks, so when he says, "Why did you leave all these black families during the Hurricane," the undereducated follow his cry and being to say it, too, without realizing that it's not entirely true.

As for the NAACP, I think that their origin was truly to try and help blacks get a foothold in a society that has tried to keep them down. Then, activists and extremeists sort of took over and I agree that they SOMETIMES go too far.

The reason that the rebel flag is offensive to blacks is pretty obvious to most people. But you also have to look at the context in which it's being presented. A college age Southern kid with a rebel flag sticker on his car is much less offensive then a thirty or forty-something Southern "hillbilly" who rails against blacks as the root of all societies problems with the same flag on his truck. And, like I said, it's usually the under/uneducated who don't realize that it no longer holds the same meaning as it once did.

This talk about the civil war being about indultrialism is only partly true. There was more then one reason for the Civil War, and one of those reasons was to free the slaves.

Now, onto your comments about white inventors vs. black inventors. (The following is taken from the following website. http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/bhistory/inventors/ ) Neither whites NOR blacks built the "modern world." It was a collective feat that took the contributions of ALL KINDS of people.

Elijah McCoy (1843–1929) invented an oil-dripping cup for trains. Other inventors tried to copy McCoy's oil-dripping cup. But none of the other cups worked as well as his, so customers started asking for "the real McCoy." That's where the expression comes from.

Lewis Latimer (1848–1928) invented an important part of the light bulb — the carbon filament. Latimer worked in the laboratories of both Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell.

Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852–1889) invented a shoemaking machine that increased shoemaking speed by 900%!

Granville T. Woods (1856–1910) invented a train-to-station communication system

George Washington Carver (1860–1943) invented peanut butter and 400 plant products

Garrett Morgan (1877–1963) invented the gas mask

Otis Boykin (1920–1982) invented the electronic control devices for guided missiles, IBM computers, and the pacemaker.

Dr. Patricia. E. Bath (1949–) invented a method of eye surgery that has helped many blind people to see.

Lonnie G. Johnson (1949–) invented the world-famous watergun, the Supersoaker

You need to open your eyes. The world is not in black and white, it is in FULL COLOR and there are wonderful things happening everyday, contributed by ALL KINDS of people. You cannot say "Why is it okay for blacks to have..." implying that all blacks use the race card without discretion (which is a "racist" comment) and then say, "I'm not racist, I have black friends!" Discrimination comes in all shapes, sizes, and yes even colors. But don't let the hype take away your common sense.

Hey, don't forget the Cosby  Show. I mean who doesn't love the Cosby Show?

The definition of "equality"

I know that there are still alot of racism in our country and around the world.  However, I hear black people, gay people, and disabled people continuously screaming equality.  Is it really equality that their searching for or is it privilege that they are seeking?

I am an American Indian.  My race has pretty much been eliminated as far as purity.  Perhaps preservation of ancestry should be respected as well as racial acceptance.  In the old time, the American Indian was one of the worst races you could be.  The white man wanted the culture and the race eliminated completely and almost succeeded. I am not pure Chickasaw, Choctaw, or Cherekee.  I have those blood lines as well as a mixure of Europian ancestry.  I have been the brunt of racisim from both sides.

As far as the prison population and the amount of people on assistance being black for the most part, I feel that the race itself  bears some of the responsibility.  They allow images that are supposedly "cool" to represent their race.  I have been raised around several different races and I was taught that everyone bleeds red.  If you are continuously taught that you are limited in what you can accomplish in life because of the color of your skin, you will believe it.  I see many peopleof color that are good role models for children of all races.

01/12 Racism Experiment

I think a great book for people on this forum to read would be Sherman Alexie's novel INDIAN KILLER.  I think everyone, Indian or not can see a little bit of themselves in any one of the characters in the novel.  The back of the book reads:

"A serial murderer is terrorizing Seattle, hunting and scalping white men.  And the crimes of the so-called Indian Killer have triggered a wave of violence and racial hatred.  Seattle's Native Americans are shaken and confused, none more so than John Smith.  Born Indian, raised white, Smith desperately yearns for his lost heritage and seeks his elusive true identity.  He meets Marie, a stormy Indian activist particularly outraged by people like Jack Wilson, the mystery writer who passes himself off as part Indian.  As a bigoted radio personality incites whires to seek revenge, Smith fights to slake the anger that engulfs him.....and the Indian Killer claims yet another life."

The publishing information for this novel is as follows.

01/12 Racism Experiment

Quote From: dterenzi

Does it make me a bad person when I can not except the fact that my 24 yr old daughter is living with a black man?  My Daughter and Granddaughter are living with a black man.  Do I object to this? ABSOLUTELY with out a doubt.  I do not dis like blacks I just don't believe that whites and blacks should mix.  A year ago my daughter was living with me and became pregnant by a black guy, needless to say she had to move out, I made it clear that there would be no way that I would ever except that child as my grand child, My daughter terminated the pregnancy, and the black guy was out of the picture, he actually wanted the pregnancy terminated but wanted me to pay for it, I refused, it wasn't my problem.  My daughter has since moved on and now is living with another black guy.  My family and I have pretty much cut her out of our lives, she can come visit but the guy is not allowed to come to our home, And they are not included in any family functions, She chose to spend Christmas with him instead of her family.  He may be a nice guy, but I just can not except the fact that he is black and that they have some sort of a relationship whatever that may be.    The worst thought that crosses my mind is the fact that my granddaughter could end up calling this man DAD,  the fear is that kids are cruel and what will happen when she goes to school and the other kids discover that she calls a black guy DAD?    I just don't know... I have told my husband over and over again that I feel guilty for the way that I feel, but I just can not get past it.
Let's see...you abandoned your daughter at the time when she needed you most; when she became pregnant, advocated her murdering your own grandchild because you didn't like the color of that grandchild's skin, disowned your daughter because she has a relationship with a "nice guy" who happens to be black...and you say you do not dislike blacks?   I think the correct description for your attitude toward blacks is you HATE blacks.  It doesn't matter to you if the man your daughter is with treats her poorly or well.  All that matters is that he isn't black.  You more than anyone would know the cruel and racist things children say to other children at school.  These children are taught to say these cruel things by people in their lives who think like you, just as I am sure you were influenced as a child by someone else's hatred.  You are not a bad person, but you are a sick person and in need of a big dose of patience, tolerance, kindness and love.  I will pray for God to touch your mind and bring the healing to your family it so desperately needs.

Have you considered WHY you feel guilty?  As people we usually feel guilty when we are doing something that is WRONG.  You really need to HONESTLY examine yourself and figure out WHY you think inter-racial dating/marriage is wrong.  Sometimes in order to get past things we just have to force ourslves to confront our beliefs as possible being faulty.

I mean isn't your daughter's happiness worth more to you than anything?  So what, the guy she loves is black.  Is that so bad compared to what he COULD have been.  I mean your daughter could have gotten involved with someone who is a complete jerk, or worse.  If he is a "nice guy"  you should be HAPPY for her, regardless of his race.  A good man is a good man.

I agree

Quote From: liatsunami

uh, actually blood is blue, until it is explosed to oxygen, but I get your point.  Even though I believe everyone is a little bit racist to some extent, even if it's only using race as a physical descriptor.
I do agree that we are all racist if you use it as a physical descriptor. And your snide little comment about blood being blue--I do know that, but when you receive a blood transfusion, you are given the oxygenated type. And technically, the liquid is not blue when you take away the oxygen--the color you see is what is not refracted thru the light that your skin filters, and it's not really liquid, it's a bit more coagulated than oxygenated blood. But thank you for understanding my point.

01/12 Racism Experiment

Quote From: heistheway

I am a 16 year old female and i am bi-racial, part korean and part white, and i'm just your average girl. I am a human being such as you are, a creation from God whom loves me, and the only thing that makes me different are my eyes. God said that the purpose of marriage is to "bear Godly offspring"(Malachi 2:15), so there is nothing wrong with marrying a person of a different race, just as long as that person is a christian if you are a christian or not a christian if you're not a christian. The bible also says that we are not to look at outward appearances, but look at the heart (1 Sam. 16:7) and to love EVERYONE, even your ENEMIES (John 13:34, Matthew 5:44). You should not carry any prejudice whatsoever, and you are never to judge, because the Bible also says that the way you judge people will be judged against you by the good Lord Himself (matthew 7:1-2...woah, i forgot which verse it was, and when i opened my bible it went to the exact page that the verse was on...i didn't even know it was in matthew!) we are all created after the image of God, so therefore we are all the same(Genesis 1:27; 5:1,2).

My mom and dad had divorced, bitterly (tell me who doesnt these days), and i was not a christian, but by God's mercy i had risen over these obsticles and accepted Him! Though i am not of a pure culture, and though my parents are both atheists, He has chosen me to spread His word.  i had hatred and resentment towards Him and boasted a proud attitude, but i eventually accepted Him because he was calling me, and found that he SAVED me from a life of ruin. God loves me as much as anyone else, for i am His child, so we should all do the same! I still get teased alot for being asian (i went to visit my dad in mississippi this summer and someone told me to go back to where i came from. Before i became christian, i would start a fight, but instead i smiled and said "my home is here where God had put me". He just gave me a dirty look, so i walked away, still smiling of course) but i know these trials are to just make me develop perserverance. Christ died for all of us, so in return we should seek forgiveness and become one in the Body of Christ, for he loved the WORLD!

WOW...I am so impressed by your wisdom, at such a young age! It has taken me 39 years to understand things you already know! Thank the Lord for the gifts He has given you and keep fighting the good fight!

Racism

I still think it exists but it's much more quiet now.   I'm white and don't understand why blacks who get some token chance at attending a favored college because of their race is threatening to white people.  A vast majority of colleges still are at least 90-95% white and they don't have a chance because some miniscule amount of minorities in general get a chance?  Guess if you've had all the power for approximately 230 years of American history it is hard to give it up.

Kendell:

I don't think Alabama is/was anymore racist than any other state.

Last Sunday on PBS, American Experience Citizen King showed when they marched in Cicero, IL (just outside Chicago) in the 1960s they experienced racial slurs, Dr. King got a brick thrown at his head and then, when at the end of the march, the participants realized that their cars were set on fire.  Dr. King told the media that even in Mississippi they didn't do that.

Racism Experment

Quote From: divableu21

You really can't be serious with what you just said. Because someone told you to sell your car and cash in your 401K (which the other woman may or may not have had in the first place to be selling) that means that more blacks than whites are on welfare. I'm sorry you had a not so great experience, but if you look all over the country, and not just in the city you applied for foodstamps in then you will see that most of the welfare recipients in this country--especially in the midwest are caucasian. And I'm not pulling that out of my behind either--six of my stepsiblings are social workers and work in welfare agencies in various places in this country.

Some of what I've been reading here simply makes me want to puke. If you have to preface a statement with "I'm not a racist, but..." or "I don't consider myself a racist, but...." then that leads the person on the receiving end of that statement (us the reader in this case) to believe that you are a racist. I don't have to tell people that my group of friends may as well be the rainbow coalition or the United Nations, because it doesn't matter. I don't have to defend it, I don't have to explain it. It is what it is. If you really see the world through multi-colored glasses as some of you say, then you don't have to count how many friends of whatever race you have. You don't see their race, and you "sho' 'nuff" don't have to explain why how you were raised allowed you to be friends with someone of such-and-such race. Reading between the lines of some of these statements and watching people's actions say a lot more than "I'm not a racist, but...." ever could. If you were truly not prejudiced in some form or racist in one way or another, you wouldn't have to make sure the world knows that you're "NOT a racist"--you wouldn't give a damn either way.

Allow me...I have O positive blood, and the red cross recruits me hard because I'm a universal donor. They don't make me specify my race, because blood is blood is blood. If you received a transfusion of O positive blood and it saved your life, you'd be pretty damned grateful, no? So if tomorrow you found out that that blood was from my "disgusting negroid/black veins", would you die from negro-itis? Nope, cuz blood is blood is blood, we all got it, it's all red. My skin might be darker than yours, but my blood could still save your life, or yours could save mine. There are so many more things to worry about than someone's skin color, so please, let it go.

I am not lying about what the case worker told me.  Most whites in CA have a hard time getting any type of state help.  They only thing the state gave me after turning me down was a voucher to get food from the food bank.  We had to throw most of it away because some  people (not all) seem to clean out there cabinets and give away out dated canned goods. We were given canned goods the the top was popped up.

I also have 0 positive blood and give blood on a regular basis. Yes blood is blood and I don't care who it comes from as long as they health.  May I ask why you say "So tomorrow you found out that blood was from my disgusting negroid/black veins would you die from negro-itis."  BLOOD IS BLOOD.

I agree there are more important things to worry about than a persons skin color.

I wish there was more people out there that gave blood.

Tell it Like it is Phil

Well,  Dr. Phil,  I   must  say that I am somewhat  disappointed that  you didnt tell Cene's mom that she  is  indeed a  racist!  Somehow  people  think  that only  white people are racist!  Give me a break!  The  most racist person at  my  workplace is black!  She  hates whites and refuses to

speak politely (even though its her job) to any white person she has to deal with....  Even the

other black people at work avoid her because her attitude is so bad .

All  races have people in it  who are racist and think their  particular race is the best.   I am married

to  an  east Indian man,  many  in the Indian community dont accept me because i am  white!

It  doesnt bother me or my husband.   I  think  all people who are racist are ignorant no matter

which race  they happen to be...........  God  made us all and we are all one race,  the human race!
