Charlie, a self-described racist, struggled with the fact that his daughter was going to have a biracial baby. His insensitive, hate-based thinking tore apart his family. After speaking with Dr. Phil, he agreed to spend some time learning about African-American culture. How did he do when Dr. Phil set him up to live with a black family for two days? And, Dave grew up believing he was white, but found out the family secret when he was 26 - that he was actually biracial. In an effort to heal the pain of being deceived his whole childhood, Dave went public with his story, with disastrous consequences. How can he heal and move on? Plus, Cene is biracial and says her mother accuses her of acting "too white." Should Cene have to choose a race? Share your thoughts.

01/12 Racism Experiment

Quote From: agibean

When our daughter was born, the hospital gave us the WA state birth certificate form to fill out, and there was no option to include both white and black.  I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure "other" wasn't on their either. So our daughter is listed as black, but it's not really accurate. Same with her school registration. The 2000 US Census listed something like 40 different ethnic mixes and all of them were checked-people should have the opportunity to list their actual ethnicity wherever they have to fill out forms!

well my son was born in southeast alabama and he is white and black but down here if the child is biracial they dont put a race.  there is no race on my sons birth certificate.  it aggrivated me at first but i understand now why they are doing it that way

01/12 Racism Experiment

Quote From: mistyc

I am a native of Mobile AL and I dont think my home state is any more racist than any other.  Shortly before I started school my Dad was severly injured in an industrial accident.  My Mom went to work to support the family while my Dad was down.  My Mom worked with a black lady and she knew Mama was having a very hard time, and that we absolutely had  no money for school clothes.

This nice lady, of her own accord, gave my Mama several new dresses that her in laws had bought for her daughter so I didn't have to go to school looking like "second hand Rose".

My Mom and this lady remain friends to this day, 30 years later.

I feel that most of the "racism" you think you are experiencing is a figment of your imagination.  People like you just keep perpetuating the myth that the south is still full of  biggots and hate mongers.

For the record I was born in the south and resided here my whole life and we are no different than anyone else period.

what i was saying is when it comes to interacial taking or biracial kids.  my father who has disowned me and my biracial son had plenty of black friends but he drew the line at sex and kids with another race.  that is what i was referring to

01/12 Racism Experiment

Quote From: semmad

I am not sure how to use this style of forum, and hope I can find my way back to this post and any replies.

Normaly I don't watch the Dr. Phil show, but for some crazy reason my house was quite at 3pm and I turned on the television to this specific episode. I was a little afraid to watch it, but deside to sit through to the end and rather than being up, I ended up with alot of questions.

I am looking to talk to (off the boards and confidentialy) anyone who may have more insight into that situation where the black  man was raised white. If you are raising a child who is racially different from the norm in your family and the reason for the racial difference is NOT common knowledge I would really like to ask about how you are handleing the situation. How and if you plan to tell the child, siblings etc.

I will promise strictest confidance and would expect the same. I have no intention of 'outting or being outted".

Thank you and I really really hope this post is not a huge mistake :S

01/12 Racism Experiment

Quote From: meisha1210

I really wish people would educate themselves before just typing ignorant information. This goes to you and the person you replyed to. I majored in statistics in college and know all the government websites such as the US Census website(who knew?), to locate accurate information.

This just goes to show how stereotypical people are. Why can't we just educate orselves before we make assumptions and make a fool of ourselves.

Total of all Welfare Recipients Statistics

39% White

38% Black

17% Hispanic

Total of Welfare Recipeints in Los Angelis County, California (2004)

15,000 were white

34,000 black

74,000 hispanic

Most do not have cars and 401k's. I apologize for not being able to get the stats on this factor.

In case you were curious I am a black female, 29 yrs old, professional married to an educated black man. I take offense to stereotypical people. It indeed pains me that my race has a higher percentile of  welfare recipients, prisoners, HIV and etc. based on the ratio of whites to blacks. If more people (not just black people) got involved in trying to make that number go down this country would be a much better place. Dr. Phil is doing his part. I do my part. What are you doing?

all i am going to say is i think it is okay to be on welfare if u need it where i have a problem no matter what race u are is when u sit on ur butt all day and live off of the taxes that i pay.  i myseld have gotten foodstamps and somthing called FA.  but i was trying and i dont think so many people would have a problem if it wasnt for people who need to get dont get because the ones not trying and sitting on their butt all day are getting

racism

Quote From: bryanac625

I read some of the comments that were left when this show aired before.  It's really sad to see how racist and clueless some people are.

I TRUELY BELIEVE BLACKS ARE RACIST TRUELY. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MANY BLACKS ATTACK WHITES .WHITES LOST EVERYTHING THEY HAD AND THEY DIED IN THE HURRICANE AS WELL AS BLACKS. DO BLACKS NOT REALIZE WHITES SUFFER TO. ALOT OF WHITES ARE AS POOR AND IN NEED AS THEY ARE. AND TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH BLACKS GET ALOT MORE BENIFITS FROM THE GOVERMENT AND STATES THEN POOR WHITES. I WOULD LOVE FOR DR. PHIL TO TALK ABOUT POOR WHITES AND  SHOW THAT WHITES SUFFER  TO. IT IS NOT FAIR TO SHOW ONLY BLACKS WHO ARE POOR . SHOW THE WHITES TO.GRANDMAFUZ

I agree with you grandmafuz !  I too feel that blacks are very racist.  Around our area the only people who even bring up the word racism is blacks. And It is always against them.  I too am not a racist, but I get tired of blacks claiming racism. they do get more coverage because they claim racism so much that people are afraid to respond to the truth. AND that is....we are all equal.  People quit sucking money from the government by claiming racism.  anymore all of the attention is going to other races and not the american people.  The government would rather give money to others so they can come to this country but they forget the people who are natives of the USA.  I am not a racist, I am angry that people still claim racism.

I am symply stating a fact that everytime you turn on the news, someone is claiming racism.  Usually it  is black people. You don't hear chinese yelling racism, you don't hear Japanese or any other race yelling racism. It has always been the black people.  I do not think all black people are racist but the ones who yell racism are usually black people.    That is a fact.  We don't, ( white people ), request that blacks won't let us in their programs yet they want their own special, catagorized by being of African American decent, programs because they claim they don't have as many rights because of racism. Like the negro college fund,, we don't have a white college fund.  Anyone can go for a fund in this country. we donot segrergate our race. There are scholorships for specifically black people, we don't have white people scholorships.  there aren't even Australian scholorships.  Black people have always made themselves be apart.  I welcome them. but stop yelling racism when there is none.

I've certainly seen racism from blacks towards whites and others over the years and it is just as appalling and just as wrong.  But it really bothers me when people come off like GRANDMAFUZ, as if white racism does not exist and has never existed.  Someone said to me ten years ago that "no one hates you because you're Black."  Does anyone really believe that?  I make it an effort not to hang around racist people who I could never be good enough for, instead I surround myself with people who are supportive and accept me for me.

Two wrongs do not make a right, but I think posts such as these are a result of what happens when people do not know American history.  Here is a quick lesson:

  • It was African-Americans who were brought to this country in slavery, entirely stripped in every way of their identity and heritage.  True, some Africans participated in the slave trade themselves, but anybody who participated in this horror shares in the guilt of it.
  • It was African-Americans who were enslaved for 246 years, from 1619 to 1865.
  • The root cause of the Civil War was slavery, and over 600,000 Americans died in the fight to decide what place black people would have in this country.  I've heard all the arguments of states' rights (really, the rights to own slaves), and that only 10% of people in the south owned slaves, but do you think it really mattered to the slaveowner if the man who fought for the South owned slaves or not? Racism also ran rampant in the North, so really, both sides shared in the guilt of injustice towards African-Americans.
  • Even though slavery ended nearly 150 years ago, "Black Codes," "Jim Crow" laws and legal segregation picked up where slavery left off.  And I think something like 4,000-5,000 blacks were lynched, in some cases mutilated and burned as well.  People used to send postcards of lynchings.  Regardless of whether or not the victim was guilty, they were denied due process of law and the right to a fair trial.  Most often, the perpetrators of these lynch mobs were seldom, if ever, prosecuted.
  • Many blacks were beaten and died for the simple rights to eat at a lunch counter, shop at a department store, sleep in a hotel, ride on a bus, marry a White person if they chose to, and above all, vote.  Blacks were given trumped-up literacy tests that others did not have to take.  If they passed these tests, they were asked questions like, "How many bubbles are in a bar of soap?"  Not that anyone knows, but if a black person somehow passed all of these ridiculous tests, they would be beaten up or killed.
  • So much of the entertainment media simply erased Blacks from movies and TV.  I remember watching a documentary on a day in New York in the early 1940s, not one Black face was seen.  I've never understood the Andy Griffith Show set in North Carolina and there is not one Black person.  Even in recent years, a Fall TV lineup was criticized for having virtually no African-Americans, especially since Blacks tend to make up a large TV viewing audience.
  • Nine years ago, a Black man was brutally murdered by three White men who dragged him to death behind the back of their truck.  This crime shocked the world, as many of us thought days like this were behind us.

Two wrongs do not make a right, and there is no justification for answering racism with more racism.  But I feel that when people say things like "Black people are racist" (and they certainly can be) it comes across like they have NEVER acknowledged white racism, like everything I listed above was no big deal.  And if someboby is going to complain that "you never hear Asians or Hispanics or whoever complain about racism the way Blacks do," again, it seems like they have no clue about things that have gone on in the past.  U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate Stephen A. Douglas said in 1858 that "the black man is the lowest race on the face of the earth.  Wherever he goes, he is a lower race than the people he encounters."  I think the reason you don't hear Asians or Hispanics or whoever complain so much about race is that some people still believe this nonsense.

I love my country and I'm proud to be an American.  I try to focus on what I have as opposed to what I don't have.  I'm thankful that I can go into a store and walk down the street in peace.  I will NEVER forget that someone sacrificed their life so I could do these things.  I'm thoroughly convinced that if no one had ever protested discrimination, not much would be different today.  In other words, when would people have just siad on their own, "You know, we've really mistreated Black people.  Let's take down the signs and the barriers and give them a chance.

Again, I love my country, even though I realize the hard truth that this country was not established with the intent of freedom and citizenship for African-Americans.  Freedom is not, and never has been, free.

I AGREE THAT IT IS MOSTLY BLACKS THAT ARE RACIST. WHY IS IT OK FOR BLACKS TO HAVE AN ALL BLACK SHOW OR ALL BLACK COLLEGE OR ALL BLACK ANYTHING BUT IF WHITES HAVE ANYTHING THAT IS ALL WHITE WE ARE CONSIDERED RACIST. THAT TO ME IS NOT RIGHT! IT ALSO INFURIATES ME THAT BLACKS THINK THAT THE CIVIL WAR WAS ABOUT SLAVERY, IT WASN'T. IT WAS ABOUT INDUSTRIALISM. ALSO, WITH THE HURRICANE KATRINA CRAP, THE BLACKS DOWN THERE ALONG WITH REV. JESSE JACKSON WANTED TO WHINE AND COMPLAIN SAYING THEY WERE LEFT DOWN THERE BECAUSE THEY WERE BLACK. ARE THEY BLIND CUZ I SAW ALOT OF RACES THERE.  I FEEL LIKE THEY WANT EVERYTHING TO REVOLVE AROUND THEM. I AM NOT RACIST, MY GOOD FRIENDS ARE BLACK, I AM RAISING MY KIDS TO BE COLOR BLIND BUT IT REALLY MAKES ME MAD THAT BLACKS HOLLER RACISM WHEN THINGS DON'T GO THEIR WAY. AND FOR THESE PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT BLACKS STARTED THIS MODERN WORLD, APPARENTLY THEY DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS, LAST TIME I CHECKED THE PERSON WHO CREATED ELECTRICITY WAS WHITE, THE PERSON THAT CREATED THE PHONE WAS WHITE. HOW DID BLACKS CREATE THE MODERN WORLD. THE ONLY THING THEY DID WAS TRY TO PUT A STOP TO SEGREGATION. HOW DOES THAT ENTITLE THEM TO ALL BLACK COLLEGES, ALL BLACK TV SHOWS AND ALL BLACK EVERYTHING. WHY IS IT FAIR THAT THEY GET TO HAVE THESE THINGS BUT THE WHITES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE ANYTHING THAT IS ALL WHITE AND IF WE DO WE ARE CONSIDERED RACIST! IT IS NOT RIGHT AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT!! JESSE JACKSON AND THE NAACP NEED TO QUIT TRYING MAKE EVERYTHING OUT TO BE ABOUT THE BLACKS GETTING TREATED SO BADLY WHEN THEY ALWAYS GET THEIR WAY ABOUT EVERYTHING. THEY GET WHATEVER THEY WANT. SO WHY CAN'T WHITES HAVE SOMETHING THAT IS JUST THEIRS, EXAMPLE: REBEL FLAG. QUIT TRYING TO GET RID OF IT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BLACKS, BUT I GUESS THAT IS THE PROBLEM. IT IS NOT ABOUT THEM SO THEY THINK THEY HAVE TO GET RID OF IT.BLACKS SHOULDN'T BE COMPLAINING BECAUSE THEY GET AWAY WITH MURDER, LITERALLY. THEY RAPE SOMEBODY OR TRAFFIC DRUGS AND THEY GET OFF SCOTT FREE. LIKE I SAID I AM NOT RACIST I LOVE ALL PEOPLE BUT IT JUST MAKES ME MAD WHEN BLACKS HOLLER RACISM WHEN THINGS DON'T GO THEIR WAY.

"BLACKS SHOULDN'T BE COMPLAINING BECAUSE THEY GET AWAY WITH MURDER, LITERALLY. THEY RAPE SOMEBODY OR TRAFFIC DRUGS AND THEY GET OFF SCOTT FREE."

Actually, if you've looked into the dynamics of the prison system at all, not only are blacks LESS likely to be found innocent for murder, but they are MORE likely to be put on death row. They are also less likely to be found innocent for other violent crimes, which is why there are more blacks in our prison system then whites.

As for the "all black shows and school," I don't know which school it is you're talking about that is "all black," but the reason that there are "all black shows" (which isn't even true, I've never seen  show that is all black) is because there ARE shows in which there are few or no black people (hello? anyone ever seen Friends or Seinfeld?) and the shows on t.v. that DO have few black people in them aren't targeted towards blacks. Therefore, tv networks started up shows that are populated with mostly black characters (Girlsfriends, The Parkers, The Bernie Mac Show) to try and reach this target audience as well. It has nothing to do with racism. Your comments are ignorant and uneducated, period.

The only black people that I've ever heard cry racism (when there was no racism) were uneducated black people. Just like the only people who I've heard say "All blacks do is cry racism," seem to be uneducated. The Rev. Jesse Jackson cries racism because it gets him put into the news. (You know what theys say- No publicity is bad publicity.) He is seen as a powerful figurehead in America, especially to blacks, so when he says, "Why did you leave all these black families during the Hurricane," the undereducated follow his cry and being to say it, too, without realizing that it's not entirely true.

As for the NAACP, I think that their origin was truly to try and help blacks get a foothold in a society that has tried to keep them down. Then, activists and extremeists sort of took over and I agree that they SOMETIMES go too far.

The reason that the rebel flag is offensive to blacks is pretty obvious to most people. But you also have to look at the context in which it's being presented. A college age Southern kid with a rebel flag sticker on his car is much less offensive then a thirty or forty-something Southern "hillbilly" who rails against blacks as the root of all societies problems with the same flag on his truck. And, like I said, it's usually the under/uneducated who don't realize that it no longer holds the same meaning as it once did.

This talk about the civil war being about indultrialism is only partly true. There was more then one reason for the Civil War, and one of those reasons was to free the slaves.

Now, onto your comments about white inventors vs. black inventors. (The following is taken from the following website. http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/bhistory/inventors/ ) Neither whites NOR blacks built the "modern world." It was a collective feat that took the contributions of ALL KINDS of people.

Elijah McCoy (1843–1929) invented an oil-dripping cup for trains. Other inventors tried to copy McCoy's oil-dripping cup. But none of the other cups worked as well as his, so customers started asking for "the real McCoy." That's where the expression comes from.

Lewis Latimer (1848–1928) invented an important part of the light bulb — the carbon filament. Latimer worked in the laboratories of both Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell.

Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852–1889) invented a shoemaking machine that increased shoemaking speed by 900%!

Granville T. Woods (1856–1910) invented a train-to-station communication system

George Washington Carver (1860–1943) invented peanut butter and 400 plant products

Garrett Morgan (1877–1963) invented the gas mask

Otis Boykin (1920–1982) invented the electronic control devices for guided missiles, IBM computers, and the pacemaker.

Dr. Patricia. E. Bath (1949–) invented a method of eye surgery that has helped many blind people to see.

Lonnie G. Johnson (1949–) invented the world-famous watergun, the Supersoaker

You need to open your eyes. The world is not in black and white, it is in FULL COLOR and there are wonderful things happening everyday, contributed by ALL KINDS of people. You cannot say "Why is it okay for blacks to have..." implying that all blacks use the race card without discretion (which is a "racist" comment) and then say, "I'm not racist, I have black friends!" Discrimination comes in all shapes, sizes, and yes even colors. But don't let the hype take away your common sense.

You can't be serious

Quote From: sweetsue45

I don't know were you get more then half of the recipients on welfare are Caucasian.  I live in Calif,  and it doesn't work that way out here.

Case in  point, about five years ago when my husband was unemployed we went and applied for food stamps. That all we needed we just wanted help in buying food for the family.  I was setting in in one of the cubicles and over heard a case worked telling a black woman not to claim her child support because she would not get welfare benefits.  I was told to sell my car ( which is needed to get to work) and to cash in my 401K.

So don't tell  me there are more whites on welfare than anyone else. Go to a welfare office in CA, you won't see that many caucasians.

You really can't be serious with what you just said. Because someone told you to sell your car and cash in your 401K (which the other woman may or may not have had in the first place to be selling) that means that more blacks than whites are on welfare. I'm sorry you had a not so great experience, but if you look all over the country, and not just in the city you applied for foodstamps in then you will see that most of the welfare recipients in this country--especially in the midwest are caucasian. And I'm not pulling that out of my behind either--six of my stepsiblings are social workers and work in welfare agencies in various places in this country.

Some of what I've been reading here simply makes me want to puke. If you have to preface a statement with "I'm not a racist, but..." or "I don't consider myself a racist, but...." then that leads the person on the receiving end of that statement (us the reader in this case) to believe that you are a racist. I don't have to tell people that my group of friends may as well be the rainbow coalition or the United Nations, because it doesn't matter. I don't have to defend it, I don't have to explain it. It is what it is. If you really see the world through multi-colored glasses as some of you say, then you don't have to count how many friends of whatever race you have. You don't see their race, and you "sho' 'nuff" don't have to explain why how you were raised allowed you to be friends with someone of such-and-such race. Reading between the lines of some of these statements and watching people's actions say a lot more than "I'm not a racist, but...." ever could. If you were truly not prejudiced in some form or racist in one way or another, you wouldn't have to make sure the world knows that you're "NOT a racist"--you wouldn't give a damn either way.

Allow me...I have O positive blood, and the red cross recruits me hard because I'm a universal donor. They don't make me specify my race, because blood is blood is blood. If you received a transfusion of O positive blood and it saved your life, you'd be pretty damned grateful, no? So if tomorrow you found out that that blood was from my "disgusting negroid/black veins", would you die from negro-itis? Nope, cuz blood is blood is blood, we all got it, it's all red. My skin might be darker than yours, but my blood could still save your life, or yours could save mine. There are so many more things to worry about than someone's skin color, so please, let it go.

uh, actually blood is blue, until it is explosed to oxygen, but I get your point.  Even though I believe everyone is a little bit racist to some extent, even if it's only using race as a physical descriptor.
