09/14 Season Premiere

I was in the audience at the taping of this show, and it was great!  I met a lot of fun people at the show.  The surprise at the end was overwhelming.  Thank you, Dr. Phil!

The only suggestion I have for any future shows of this kind-

If you're going to keep us in the sun all day, please let us know beforehand so we can make sure we've got our sweatproof sunscreen on.  No one told us that we'd be outside, and a lot of people (including myself) got quite sunburnt.

Congrats to Dr. Phil for Season 4- and here's to many, many more!  We'll definetely be watching!

Cheers!

All in all you cannot please everyone.  Perhaps to tell you that you would be outside would have been helpful, but knowing the venue should have told you that.  Please be happy you are alive and take everthing else in stride.  Just think, unless you were held captive, you have left.

Actually, we believed that the venue was going to be inside the studio.  It was a surprise to everyone when we were escorted to a parking lot.  And if I'd left, I wouldn't have been able to find my car.  I don't know the area, and remember, we were driven to the studio in busses.

It was a great experience overall, but they should have been handing out sunblock when we got on the busses.  I still think Dr. Phil is the best!  :)

Neurological problem, not evil?

Quote From: heidi001

No one has addressed this issue:

My mother is about the age Catherine. My mother is usually a good, loving person. But over the last few years she has taken to lying. Her children catch her all the time, but she insists she is telling the truth. It is either the truth in her eyes or how she wishes it to be, but it is not fact as we know it. And further about elderly people - they have really thin skin and Maria could have inflicted those injuries with very little pressure.

I just felt the wife was more honest than the mother, because at one point the man stated she had put down his father for years, and now she is starting it around his children, about their own mother.

She just denied everything and played the poor old southern lady card. I think older people think they can get away with fibs and lies more because we are all taught to be respectful of our elders. It really irked me because the details even she gave made her look more guilty than Maria.  Just my opinion...

This post has made me think about another issue that no one seems to be addressing:

Has anyone considered that the MIL's behavior may be indicative of undiagnoses neurological changes due to aging?  I do not condone the MIL's behavior on the show whatsoever, and I'm certainly not trying to think of reasons to excuse what she did.

I've noticed that many people on this board have also mentioned that they've noticed that older adults in their lives have taken to lying on a regular basis.  Maybe these older adults have some sort of memory disorder?  They actually believe that things happened differently than what they really did.

I work professionally as an animal trainer.  Whenever I notice an unexplained behavior change , I run tests to rule out any unseen physiological issues; in most cases, we find a problem (illness) that usually can be remedied.

While I know that the MIL is definetely not an 'animal', narrowing down the problems should still be the same.  Is there a physical/neurological problem contributing to the MIL's lying/denial behavior?  Have tests been run?
