I have always believed OPRAH and Dr and Mrs Phil were my heros. So generous and smart enough to reach out and just give, give and give. And all those wonderful sponsers like Walmart and others. BUT AFTER SEEING YOUR SHOW ELAINE AND SPENDING SOME TWENTY MINUTES CRYING MY EYES OUT IN THE BATHROOM I KNOW YOU ARE MY HERO.  MY INSPIRATION  

   

I live in Botswana (Southern Africa). We share a border with Zimbabwe and you might have heard about some of the awful things the leadership there is doing to the citizens. (if not watch tha BBC or Africa news channels if you have any) Anyway this means there are a lot of illegal imigrants from Zimbabwe and our government is having trouble controlling the situation. And as you know  where there are people there is reproduction. About six weeks ago our Main General Goverment Hospital called out to the public to help by adopting or fostering some babies whose moms gave birth to them and dissapeared from the hospital without trace. My heart went out to those kids and I felt a strong impulse to go and get one. After assesing my financial situation and the fact that I'm single parenting three kids I figured I wasn't a good candidate.   

   

Worse (to my heart) were some of the remarks that the women in my office were making about these babies 'what if she has aids or grows up to be a nuinsance" and others. I was reall broken by these because I believe if this child does have aids he is probably the child that really needs my love and care.    

   

From now on I'm not looking at why I shouldn't do but at why I should. I might never even come close to reaching 50 kids or 100 kids but I know if I can make a difference in one child maybe two maybe three it should be worth something.   

   

I am at a loss to tell Elaine how much I admire her. I think she is the most amazing woman I have ever had the privilage of knowing. If possible maybe the Dr Phil staff can put her in touch with me i would be honoured to have a conversation with her.

At 4 she got gifts for the local "Teddy Bear Den", and she got to go deliver them. She thought that was cool. At 5 she donated the gifts to a local family in need and got to meet the children. The girl living with me is my daughters fiance's sister.  Her mother is a drug addict who recently got out of jail and is now living in a homeless womens house.  My future son-in-law  grew up in the foster system and doesn't want to see that happen to his sister.  I took this girl in because I thought it was probably in her best interest.

Anyhow, she desperately needs orthodontic work and the state keeps turning it down for unfounded reasons (ie, she still needs to lose baby teeth that have beengone over a year).  Not only do I not know where to turn, the dentist office says if it isn't done this year she will have to have major facial surgery to correct her problems.

Next, was I wrong to not formalize her living with my family?  Is the foster care system not as bad as all the stories you hear?

Any insight would be welcome!!
