Parents who lie to their children and tell them that there is something more important than appearance are doing their children a great disservice. Studies have shown that attractive people are treated better in all areas of life and at all ages than those who are less attractive. Fat people in particular are singled out, but on the whole anyone who does not fit the norm, and we are not talking raving beauty, will have difficulty in life. I think we need to be honest with our children and tell them that their chances at success and love are directly proportional to their physical acceptability. If you are less than perfect, or if you are fat, you will have to fight twice as hard for half the recognition. People will be embarrassed to be seen with you. Your chances are slightly better if you are a man, but your choices will be limited by your girth or the fact that you do not fit within acceptable physical norms. The package is at least as important as what's inside.

I was horrified by today's show in which a woman physically and verbally abused her children and by her husband who claims that a good kick in the butt (with a steel-toed shoe) and beating children with a big stick did them no harm. It killed me that those poor children were so terrified that they felt compelled to make excuses for the abuse and that in the end, they went home with the same abusive parents with whom they came. Please can someone tell me what happened after the show. Clearly, both are mentally ill, but those children are being made to pay. I understand that Dr. Phil could not remove the children from their abusive home, but I hope that something good of this came for them. I will always be haunted by the vicious disregard the women, to a great extent, and her husband, to a lesser extent, had for those children.

You misspelled the word "ridiculous" and what I said about beauty being at least as important as talent is supported by research.

I have no idea why Dr. Phil thought placing Jeffrey in therapy would make a difference--but he did get three shows out of this, so maybe that's the reason. Jennifer needed help to get out of that marriage and should never have been made to wait until Jeffrey "completed" therapy. Frankly, I'm surprised he hadn't shot her because that's clearly where he was headed and given the limits of the law, he may still have an opportunity to kill her.

I do not believe one word of what that man is saying. I think he is mentally unbalanced and maybe this is his crazy way of seeking sympathy from his wife. If she had any sense at all she would finally divorce the guy and move on with her life. I am sure he will be fine after years of expensive therapy.

The mom is angry because she forced her son to choose and he didn't choose her. She bad mouth's her son's then fiance and then is surprised that they don't want her at the wedding. With a mother like her, I'm surprised her son was able to find anyone he could trust.

The guy has a backbone and that's when the troubled started. Instead of doing what mom wanted him to do, he did what he felt was right for him. And it was clearly explained that the reason is blanked out is because of his job. Apparently, you agree that the mother should be allowed to berate that couple at will and without owning up to the terrible things she has said.

You don't need to understand why people think differently than you do. There are plenty of people who for any number of reasons don't want children, there is nothing wrong with either schools of thought.

Clearly, Tanya believes that what she wants supersedes all and frankly she doesn't care about what her husband wants. A friend was 48 when his wife had their last child (her idea, not his). He's happy to have that child, but he sure wishes that at age 63, he didn't have to deal with a teen. If you don't have the kid in the first place, then you don't need to worry about how could you live without the kid. You cannot miss what is not there.

There is no compromise in this situation, Tanya wants a baby and will do whatever she needs to do to have that child, with or without her husband. If she was unsure at the time, then she lied to her husband in the first place when she said she did not want to have children.

Chris has explained to us what he would do, first he would kill his wife; then, he would kill is child to save her from the pain of living with her mother's murder; and then he would kill himself because he was so remorseful. He smilingly recounts how he tortured the family pet. And yet his mom seems to honestly believe that her abusive little darling would not one day take out the whole family and then himself, if only to avoid the unpleasantness of jail. Yes, there is something seriously wrong with Chris, and I don't have to be a mental health professional to know this. Karen should leave him immediately and seek an order of protection to keep him away from her, her child and her pets. It doesn't mean that Chris won't go after her because, poor dear, he was provoked. But she has a better chance of survival away from this nut than with him. We cannot jail people for the thought of murder/suicide but we can make an effort to admit him for therapy and to protect his family as much as possible. Chris is a dangerous individual who seems unwilling or unable to understand his need for violence. But Chris needs to be admitted for his safety and for the safety of others, including the cat.

What ever happened to innocent until proved otherwise? Peterson may have killed his wife, but without evidence, there is very little we can do. Although I understand that cops often protect each other, I am not convinced this is the case in this instance.
