It is statements like yours that are probably the reason why steven lashes out like this. all you're doing is making him feel even worse about himself. Sometimes I even struggle with ths because I faced some torment in middle school for being different and I'm only 22. Everyone else is encouraging him so why can't you. I'm still trying to come at total peace with myself just like steven is. I haven't seen the show, but while reading the previews, I didn' think shallow like you are, he just needs some love, encouragement, and some prayer.
