Not again!

This is so sad. I also think it happens a lot more often than any of us want to believe. I personally had a friend who went through a very similar experience, and I am definitely going to encourage her to watch this series.

Any person who would knowingly do this, and for fun and games? should be locked away forever. I don't know why this woman would do such a thing but I can't wait to see what happens to her. I hope they nail her to the wall.

God bless the victims, you deserve peace and justice.

????

Quote From: reticulate

The lady didn't steal anyone's hopes or dreams, she stole their money. Babies are blank slates; one is as good as the next.  She scammed them, she'll go to jail, but she isn't evil, and they can go buy another kid.

reticulate...

Man, you need to go and do some research. Your statements are very inaccurate, let alone insensitive to the plight of these three women.

Did it ever occur to you that a lot of people who are scammed do NOT give any money to the scammer? Some of these evil people are just in it for the thrill of manipulating their victims.

By the way, we don't "BUY" children in this country. That's a federal crime. Again, spend some time researching instead of kicking people when they're down. UGH.

Myspace page

Quote From: jrbarney

I am interested in viewing the Myspace.com page that Marie set up. This is such a disturbing topic for me as I have fought to become a mother myself and am still fighting that long fight. If anyone has a link, I would appreciate it.

Thank you...

Marie, Jen, and Chrissy(sp) are in our thoughts.

Well, unfortunately, the MySpace page you referenced no longer exists.

I have a feeling she's the reason behind that, too.

I am one person who has no sympathy for these people.  If they wanted to adopt, they should have gone through known legitimate channels.  Putting an ad in the paper?  Why not just auction a baby off?  These are people who outsmarted themselves and got burned for it.  They weren't even smart enough to know something was up when the "mother" kept having them repaint the same room?  These people might have just as well written their ad on a bathroom wall.  There are many children out there who really need good homes.  These people were too good for that?  I see kids with no homes all the time, but these people wouldn't think of them.  No.  They had to buy the "best" child they could and they got what they deserved.

You can't be serious!!!

Boy, it is people like you who really do not pay attention to what they are seeing right in front of their faces.

These women DID GO THROUGH KNOWN LEGITIMATE CHANNELS!!!  There were agencies and attorneys involved. Far be it for you to believe that even professionals in the adoption industry are LIED TO!!!

These women WILL GET what they deserver. And it will be a GOOD REWARD. I am confident of that!!

And people like you, need to clam up and get educated.

Quote From: klagow

Maybe I am missing something BUT - how can anyone actually adopt a baby without researching and at the very least, meeting the person first!  People worry about getting cheated when purchasing objects online and putting their credit cards online but they will go through a transaction of adopting a baby without ever meeting and getting to know the birth mother?  That's crazy!  I'm not saying that these people deserved any of this but I still think they were just setting themselves up to be conned!

No no no you were NOT paying attention!!!!!

Did you not GET that Melissa finally unraveled her scam when FACED WITH MEETING these families? She led them on until there was the reality of them coming to her door. Then she boxed herself in a corner and had to lie her way out, although the lies for the families were heartbreaking...she had no choice. She could NOT meet them and not appear pregnant...right? She had to "end it" somehow, because it wasn't real.

DUH. Pay attention here. Oh and by the way, there were other victims who DID meet her in person. As you can see, she's huge...enormous....a hidden pregnancy would have been simple for her, without any proof. Adoptive parents try not to rock the boat, so they only push so far. I see nothing wrong with how these families handled themselves.

I see EVERYTHING wrong with the nasty con artist who sits there all smug and guiltless. What a wench.

sometimes it feels useless

Quote From: glodun419

I cannot believe that someone who wants to adopt a child, would go on the internet to do this.  It boogles my mind.  Everyday you read about scans on the internet and it is one thing to get a faux diamond not the real thing, but to "purchase" a baby?  Because that is exactly what you were doing, purchasing a baby.

to try and educate people with this kind of mentality.

NO one tried to "purchase" a baby here. Get this through your head, people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was little or NO money given to her. She led people along, with her lies and deceit. Until she couldn't keep it up and had to end it, somehow.

I just don't understand why people are speaking without thinking or paying attn to the details here.

UGH.

oh please

Quote From: drnschelle

Sorry but as an adoptee I am tired of hearing people who try to buy children whine about being scammed. The telling quote was when the one "wanna be mother" said "my first reaction was that she got a better OFFER" OFFER? You're not negotiating a new buick lady! You shouldn't be able to buy a child. They should be ashamed. Stop whining, don't insist on an infant and go through an agency on the up and up like my parents did where you pay for medical bills and you won't be at risk for being scammed. Today's adoption law needs to be revised because people are going online, buying children and thinking because an attorney is involved it's ethical. Let's face it attorneys? Ethical? Where did lawyer jokes come from?

What this girl did was wrong. But what they did was wrong too. They were shopping and thought they were getting a good bargain. The smallest research if you are looking into adoption tells you infants are hard to get and most of all white infants. So if you're buying a baby you gotta know "if it sounds too good to be true it is too good to be true". There are plenty of children to adopt. They may not be a white baby which is worth a lot of money out there but there are plenty of just as many children who need to be loved more than anything in this world and they are available through state agencies.  If you truly want to be a parent - you can be one. Just like Rosie O'Donnel lsaid, you have to be open about who you are willing to adopt. So sorry I have little sympathy...if their motives are truly genuine their child is waiting and they won't be sneaking around trying to buy it online.

a better "OFFER" was meant in a sarcastic way. She was putting herself in the scammer's shoes. She was saying that maybe since Melissa was ending the relationship, she had found someone who was giving her money. IN the end, it didn't matter as she was never pregnant. DUH!!

Have a little bit of sense.

no

Quote From: country02

All I will say is I am sorry to these families for what they have been through but no one should ever use the internet to become parents... this is what happens.

ALWAYS USE AN AGENCY. Also, this shows birthmothers in a very bad light. I see birthmothers every day who are selfless.

If anyone has any questions please email me.

This scenario is in NO WAY a reflection on birthmothers. Melissa was not, never ever was she a birth mother. She was NOT pregnant and was NOT planning to place her child in a loving home. There was NO baby. Ever.

She's a CON ARTIST. Period, end of sentence.

I have utmost admiration for the selfless birthmothers of the world. Melissa is the exact opposite.

eewwww

Quote From: mediadiva

Obviously everyone was suffering, including and perhaps especially Melissa.  Some interpreted her stony face as expressionless, but I felt she was barely holding herself  together.  She seemed to be filled with fear, anxiety and completely bewildered about how to do what was expected of her - namely, expose herself to the wrath of her enraged victims.   I found myself asking what would cause Melissa to be so needy, so unable to empathize with others, that she would seek out attention in such a emotionally vulnerable arena such as an adoption scam?    And why are people so eager to dole out punishment, rather than work, really work  through to a solution that could help everyone grow and become better people?

I'm left wondering why Melissa just doesn't deliver on her promises:  become a surrogate - twice - once for each of the victims who still want children. Within a couple of years the victims would have their kids, Melissa would have made restitution, and hopefully, all would have learned a thing or two about the Law of Compassion, instead of relying on a penal system that does little to improve or enlighten anyone.

Uh, did you see the size of her??  does she look like a healthy candidate for surrogacy????

Nope, I don't think so. Aside from the clear fact that if I were one of those women you could not force a baby on me that had come from HER. Not now, not ever. She's vile and disgusting. PERIOD!!!

I just hope these women can move on and forget about it. I wish it would be that easy, but perhaps they will find the happiness of babies and that will wash over some of their deep pain.

not true

Quote From: vineandbranch

Dr. Phil,

How could you possibly make a deal with Melissa promising her that there was going to be no more consequences from those other women, that it would "end today" if she would just let them have a chance to talk to her? How do you know that they arent going to prosicute, like they should?? I agree that they need to move on, but Melissa also has to face the music of what she has done, and may still be doing... was it more important that they were able to have their say to her, rather than her pay for what she has done?

You might have misunderstood Dr. Phil's comments about it "ending today".

What he really meant, was, HER running from her victims, ends today.

There is nothing, no place no how, in his statements that says "if you meet these women, they will not prosecute you". He doesn't have that decision. As you have read, the FBI is handling the case and believe me, if they have her computer already, there's something valid to be seen and the FBI will follow through.
