Suing for love

The alienation of affections law dates back to the 19th century with breach of promise and other causes of action that have been abolished in most states. The primary reason it still exists in North Carolina and a few other states is a windfall for family law attorneys. The courts have no business being involved in the private affairs of individuals and the rationale behind such laws are dealt with more than adequately in divorce actions. The at-fault party can be made to pay though property distribution and/or alimony. Therefore, in the case of the straying husband who lied to the woman about his marital status the abandoned spouse can and should go after him, but trying to spread the liability out to a third party is having the courts invade in our personal lives too much. In these days of tremendous court backlogs to hear cases, these kinds of cases really don't need to be there.

Suing for love

That girl who had the brief affair with the married guy who took off...Didn't she ever hear of birth control? I frankly have very little sympathy for either of them. She should have used birth control, and insisted he use a condom. How did she know she wasn't going to catch something. Unless she wanted to get pregnant in order to hook this guy into a relationship and financial support.

Jena 6

Personally I am beginning to think that the town of Jena could benefit from a "truth and reconciliation" commission similar to what they had in South Africa and Greensboro, North Carolina. There are 2 perceptions of the town. The white majority population sees no problem whatever except for "outsiders" coming in and stirring things up (boy does this sound familiar...freedom rides.) The African-American population sees inherent racism and justice weighted in favor of whites and the upper economic class. It is obvious that there is an extreme amount of tension in the town and the nooses and the subsequent beating were symptoms of that tension that was waiting for any spark to set off an explosion.

DNA Dramas

Quote From: crystalwhe

The "REAL" Dad in any child's life is the man who is raising him/her!  Give it a rest, this man seems to be the onne responsible for his child and not matter the results of DNA testing is the "REAL" Dad.

Those of us with adopted children, step children, extended families of what ever type no who are the "REAL" people in a child's life...........and I for one really get upset about the "REAL" title being thrown about. I am my daughter's Mom even tho she does not look like me, my husband is her Dad even tho there is no family resemblance.  Please, people, watch your phrasing!

I agree with Crystal. "Real" is a hell of a lot more than mere biology. Any two mammals can make a child. Its the ones who are raising that child that make them the parents, not the "birth parents."

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: chrissy_06

I think that  Dog should get his show back b/c he his a hero to many people and he is one of my heros and he always will be. He made a mistake and we all make misakes its part of who we are. And i as do many people think that he should get his show back. He has one of the best tv shows around.
This is not just a "mistake." This is a reflection of the man's beliefs that he carries into his everday life. I heard the tape on Youtube. As long as his son continues with this woman Dog will not let him work  in his organization. The only "mistake" that Dog feels is that he got caught.  Do you think that Trent Lott or Strom Thurmond fell any differently. The thing is that Dog is a evangelical christian  who has appeared at their televised shows and has loudly expressed those beliefs on his show. They have a prayer before they take down the bad guys. To me-racism is part of the core belief of many evangelical christians, particularly  Republicans. Everytime one of these guys gets caught whether its Mel Gibson going on a rant about the Jews, Trent Lott extolling the virtues of Strom Thurmond and segregation or Dog spewing his vile, they try to rehabilitate themselves with apologies. The trouble is the same beliefs remain.

Didn't SHE ever hear of it? Are you kidding me? It's all on her?? Are these men too SIMPLE to figure out the concept? Besides that, I am sick of the implications that birth control is 100%. You CAN still get pregnant no matter how many forms of birth control you use. He should have been a bit more concerned with being safe because he is a cheating scumbag!

Yeah-but ultimately it's her body. If she didn't use birth control or insist that he use birth control she had another option. It's called saying NO!!!. No birth control is not 100% effective, but it is 99% effective if used properly and there would be fewer pregnancies. If it turned out to be an accident then there is the morning after pill or abortion. Ultimately the choice is hers. That's what choice is all about.

History repeats

A number of things bothered me about this show. What was most disturbing was that initially, while Abdullah was talking, Katherine was beginning to relate to him  again. You could see that by the way she was smiling and her body language. The other thing, was her getting into some kind of relationship so soon after getting out of the abusive one with Abdullah. Just because this new boy is an American does not mean he isn't the same type of personality as Abdullah. Finally, while my impression of Abdullah was his entire family (certainly his father who paid for a 16 year old girl to deceive and leave her family for the benefit of his son) is very bad news. Dr. Phils' delight that she was now with an American boy  left a  bad taste in my mouth as if American girls should only be with American boys and vice-versa. In any case, I think Katherine could benefit from a good deal of psychological help.

Predator

This guy is a sexual predator-pedophile. They do not change and there is no cure.  The best that can happen is that they be isolated from society and put in a place where they have no access to children until they are too old to be a threat.

Rights under Islam

Quote From: flthomcat

The topic is NOT about Islam. But PLEASE do not generalize. Muslim women in one country do not necessarily have the same rights at Muslim women in other countries.

For instance, Turkey is more European than most other Muslim-dominated countries. Women there have many rights. But in Saudi Arabia, Iran and other such places they have fewer rights.

Take the case in Iran at this time. A woman was savagely raped by a group of men. She is now facing a year in jail and hundreds of lashes because she was in a car with a man (and she didn't have a male relative with her at that time). They shortened her jail sentence but UPPED the number of lashes because she brought her case's attention to the media. What a way to silence future rape victims!!!

Many Saudi women would still love to drive to their employment, but their opportunities are fewer due to the govt refusing to allow them this "right."

Just as Christian religions differ by countries, by state and by parish, Muslim "rights' differ as well.

Actually the incident where the woman was raped and then punished by the court happened in the country of Geroge W. Bush's great friend and our strategic ally, Saudia Arabia. The same country where many schoolgirls burned to death in a fire several years ago because they could not be allowed out of the school improperly covered up or in the company of a non-relative male.

Democracy & Dictatorship

Quote From: yvette16

And that is the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

 Justice and injustice.

Every nation has a part of people that are very intelligent. This is the group of people that is striving for knowledge and justice for all, to better their nation, to show the world that they are evolving, being more civilized, control their primitive urges.

I see it mostly in USA and Europe if they can do it, it's possible or they must be super human inteligent race...

The only problem is that ever since WWII our government has supported Saudi Arabia and it's system and has never tried to do a thing abou the way it treats its people. As long as they keep the oil flowing, they could be lining up women and burning them with flamethrowers and the only thing our government would do is ask them if they could reduce the price of oil a little.
