I looked this up a while ago when my boyfriend had a recurrence of CA-MRSA. Geranium oil and grape seed oil / extract have higher activity against MRSA than tea tree oil does, although it has some activity. It is also important that personal hygiene is addressed - I bought a shower gel with grape seed extract in it. And, any skin abrasion he gets he also uses a combination of geranium and grape seed oil on the broken skin.
While drugs do have potential problems, sometimes for a serious or recurrent infection, you need to rely on both traditional medicine as well as alternative. From experience RUN FOR THE HILLS if your doctor prescribes Vancomycin IV...it is a dirty drug and not very effective at all. It causes all kinds of problems like kidney failure. People should ask their doctors about the following treatment options:
CA-MRSA: Septra DS(2 pills 2x a day) plus Rifampin for first occurence, and maybe second. Septra is often underdosed, but people with sulfa allergies watch out...my friend had a very bad reaction.
Zyvox (linezolid) is VERY effective, Cubicin (daptomycin) is good...but ONLY for skin infections...NOT pneumonia
HA-MRSA: Only Zyvox or Cubicin (see above notes) - again, Vancomycin is older and not as effective...don't let you doctor prescribe it over these newer, more effective options
Bottom line - treat it aggresively up front to eradicate the bug and prevent recurrence or more serious infections! After having my boyfriend and good friend affected, I have learned A LOT!!!!!
