09/22 Are You a Racist?

Quote From: chumpette

You've got to be kidding! I am absolutely appalled at the immense ignorance and arrogance you so proudly display in your quote. I can't believe you think that every time someone 'yells' racism it's 'usually' a black person. You obviously lead an extremely sheltered and uneducated life. Perhaps you'd next like to say that all Arabs or Muslims are terrorists! Your facts are clearly WRONG! People of all ethnic groups, races and religions experience racism and prejudice. The bottom line is that you cannot make such generalizations about an entire group. There are wonderful as well as awful people in all races, ethnic groups and religions. You say at the end of your quote that you 'welcome' black people...I'd like to know how many black people reading what you wrote find you or your words 'welcoming'? I doubt many do. I really think you need to turn off the news, step outside your front door and educate your self about these 'black' people who are 'always' making themselves be apart from people like you. Ever think that perhaps, just maybe, it was you and your behaviour and actions that made these 'black' people want to stay as far away from people like you as possible?

It's times like this that I'm proud to be a Canadian!

I will say again....I did not say all black people are racist nor do they all threaten racism.  I still feel that when the majority of the people who yell racism, it is black people.  Apperantly you don't watch the news.           Liz

200 Pounds or More to Lose

Quote From: cheriemont

There is also a Food Guide that accompanies the Ultimate Weight Solution book, but it's not absolutely necessary if money is tight. There are enough guidelines in the UWS book to let you know (and here online) what kinds of things to eat and what to not eat. Actually, it's cheaper to eat this way than to buy the other stuff--it just takes a while to get used to buying selectively. I'm not a fan of bread either and usually have only one sandwich on weekends with my DH, but I could easily do without that too. Wheat does not seem to be a problem for me, but I know it is for many. Sugar IS a problem, and as you said, just a little sugar is like trying to take just one line of meth--it just doesn't work that way. We need to be TOTALLY sugar-free. Once you are, you'll find that everything else tastes better. If you buy a whole chicken, you can get roughly 6 meals out of the protein on one little chicken. Then you can fill up the rest of your meal with veggies--canned is fine and you can get them on sale 3/$1 or 4/$1 when they're marked down that low. OR you can shop fresh veggies in season when they're cheap. Your blood sugar will stabilize if you eat regular food every 3-4 hours and you won't need sugar to zap it when it drops.

One meal I make often during the winter is with canned veggies (and leftovers). I use beans--both garbanzo and one can of either black, pinto or red beans plus 2 cans of  green beans, 1 can diced tomatoes (with juice), a can of corn, a can of low fat-low sodium vegetable soup and a can of low-fat chili. Toss in any leftover veggies you have and stir it all together in a crock pot and heat it up. I usually have that for dinner one night with DH and for lunches the next 5 days or so. It's very filling and not really expensive when you consider it makes 6-8 servings. Soups are another way to save money and use up leftovers. boil the bones from your meat to get stock and add lots of veggies and a tiny bit of meat.

Last night we had taco salad. I use about 3 oz. hamburger just to give it a meat taste (my DH doesn't like it without meat and that little bit satisfies him that I didn't make it vegetarian). I add a diced tomato, half a head of lettuce, a handful of black olives sliced up, a couple handsful of crumbled up tortilla chips (the baked kind) and a can of garbanzo beans and a can of pinto or red beans (both drained and rinsed off) and a half packet of taco seasoning. I brown the meat and add the seasoning and a little water and stir it in a really hot pan, then add the beans and stir to coat them with the seasoned liquid. I usually also grate a little cheddar cheese to put on top, but last night I forgot and I couldn't tell the difference so from now on it will be cheese free for me. DH said he thought it tasted a little more bland than usual, but we'd run out of taco sauce (he uses it, I don't--the seasoning in the meat is enough for me) so he figured it was the lack of sauce and not the cheese that he missed. Anyway, we each ate a very large salad for dinner last night and I had another large salad today for lunch. It's great and not expensive.

Many of us on the board are on tight budgets too so we get pretty good at cooking on a shoestring. There's also a message board one of our other members started where you can get some good recipes. I'll try posting the link to that board--it's good to subscribe to that one too and you can keep up as new recipes are added.

Hang in there--you'll do great. You have such a positive attitude and I know you can do it.

Cherie

p.s. I like your statement too--one of my stumbling blocks is that sometimes I'm too pig-headed to be willing to learn, but I'm working on that too.

Thank you for all the information.  I did access the site you sent me too Cherie.   So....I just came from my doc. appt. I didn't lose as much weight as I would have liked to but, I did lose 8 1/2 lbs.  which makes my grand total : 65 lbs. I am now 260 lbs. coming from 325 lbs.   I have been eating a bit lately though. but for dinner I am having a small steak, grilled on my george foreman grill, couldn't live with out that thing !!! , And I will probably have some veggies with it.   the size of the steak is the size of the palm of my hand and there is pretty much no fat on it. for a change I feel like eating a meal, instead of a bowl of cereal or something.   Maybe this group is having an effect on me already !!  LOL        Anyway thank you all again for all your support.            Liz

09/22 Are You a Racist?

Quote From: greenbird

I am no expert, however, I have a few thoughts for you...First, this country that you call home is the richest country in the world...Why?  To start, the country was taken  (quite violently I might add) from the Native Americans who were almost completely 'exterminated' from existence.  Shortly thereafter, the founding members of this country decided to reap the benefits of 'free labor'.  That's right, SLAVERY!  For hundreds of years, the country was built on the backs of slaves.  What was their great reward for building the richest nation in the world...RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION that is still rearing its ugly head today!  I know what you are thinking...slavery was hundreds of years ago...Well, it wasn't that long ago when overt racism occurred right in our own backyards, anyone heard of Jim Crowe!  Today, you may be thinking that African Americans and other minority groups have it easy in today's society, however,  there is still a strong stigma to being not white in this country.  Being a minority effects everything from where you live, to the quality of your education, the amount of wealth you accrue in your lifetime, etc. etc. etc.   The one thing that you must understand is that race is NOT biological, it is completely contructed socially and politically.  I would like for you to clarify what you mean by "The government would rather give money to others so they can come to this country but they forget the people who are natives of the USA."  Please clarify who you consider to be a native of the USA.  Please also tell me the last VICTIM of a crime who was a minority that was splashed across every news outlet (in response to this quote "they do get more coverage because they claim racism so much that people are afraid to respond to the truth".  And one last thing, what is the TRUTH that people are afraid to respond to?  I will be waiting on pins and needles for a response!  Thanks
Hello !!!!   didn't you watch the Dr. Phil show today, there were tons of kids shown.  In our area we see lots of pictures of different races of kids that are missing.  Our area, my friends and I don't segregate one minority from the other.  That is why  I get upset that SOME black people yell racism. Everybody is blowing this out of portion !  I have never refered to EVERY SINGLE BLACK PERSON ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH !  I will say this again.....When there is someone claiming racism it ussually just HAPPENS to be a black person.  That is why I get upset about this. Our area is not racest. We love all people. So those who claim racism make me angry, I don't give a hoot what race they are.  This isn't the early 1800 to 1900's.  it is 2005 !!   The first statement  you asked about....I am talking about illegal aliens.  What did you think I ment ? Just people born of the mayflower?   People are afraid to fight against someone who claimes racism because you always loose, if not, the person claimes racism on the government.  Where ever they go all anyone has to do is say racism and they get everything handed to them on a silver platter. I just think people are taking advantage of this.

09/22 Are You a Racist?

Quote From: usmcwf05

MY (NOTE:MY) Opinion:

I agree that the MAJORITY of people claiming "racism" are the blacks.  But let s all understand that as long as we have freedom, we will always have differances and we will always have that double standard.......about sexual woman being easy and sexual men being heroes, about mexicans, blacks, asians...whatever.  If you ever notice, commercials always have the perfect "mix" of races.....isnt it sad that most of us are no longer racist but are forced to be scared of unintentionally hurting someone and then being called a racist, that we have to think and rethink the things we do?  I am not a racist because I understand that everyone is there own person and that just because the majority of 'whatever' do/say/think alike, it does not mean ALL of them/we do.  Example:  I am from Texas and I say "y'all", like a lot of other texans, but I dont ride horses, wear wranglers and boots with spurs.  Like Liz says , every race has its good and bad citizens.......we need to stop walking around eggshells with everyone.  Look, MOST whites hurt Native Americans by breaking 400 of there treaties.....but that has changed, its time to live life.  MANY, not all, hurt African Americans during the Slave era, but that is changing everyday......we are a different culture now.  Can someone please tell me how many people would get burned, fired and attacked if there was a WHITE ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION (WET) like there is a BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION (BET) channel????  We are creating this standard for one another by being too scared to JUST BE.---JUDY

                             THANK-YOU !!!!

How I Got Help

Quote From: labelfree

I was diagnosed with Bi polar too...I worked from the inside out with Dr. Phil  I actually think I have this thing called D.I.D.  this girl posted it was me to a tee....

What or how did you learn about the Schizophrenia?  What age were you and what happened if I am getting to personal Im sorry....I am really proud that you are so open and able to speak about this.  Being Bi polar pisses me off.

When did this happen for me?  I had a really really great talk with my MOM the other day....First time in ALONG LONG time  I am talking YEARS trust me.....she said she noticed a change in me in middle school...HELLO  why didnt she get me help then?

That's when I started smoking weed and drinking to cover the shame and guilt of what my brother did to me  he sexually abused me for years and years.  My father touched me and well all thats over now...But I think you really never get over your father trying to stick his tongue down your throat and grabbing your chest when your developing and from what my older sister says he did to her what my older brother did to me and well that crap is all just twisted up and disgusting.

My body also goes into hyper mania.  Sometimes I frett...I worry and worry just like my Momma I have noticed.  I dont want that tape playing in my head.  I do not believe I have Schitzopherenia but you are so well educated on the subject  let me warn you though maybe if you start talking to me I might think I have it so......maybe Im not sure....

But everything that girl on the depression board printed out I can admit too honestly about the D.I.D  it really rang true....I have to go for now..See you soon.  I mean talk to you hopefully soon.  I am going for another evaluation ASAP  I went yesterday but I picked the wrong place....even though it was an eating disorder place and I am having food problems that shrink was cruel to me...

The technical name for my illness is psychitzoaffective.  Which is both bi-polar and psychitzophrenia rapped into one.  psychitzo- meaning thought dissorder, and affective-meaning mood dissorder. I was diagnosed when I was 19 but I remember mood changes in highschool.  You must have several symptoms of both  for a certain amount of time, just like anything else. For more information on psychitzophrenia, just look on the internet. Type in Mental Illness and lots of information will come up.   If you have any more questions feel free to ask.          Liz

09/20 Little Mean Girls

Quote From: tbeeman

If you want to be heard, you must speak in Love. Yes, as parents we need to see where we are making our mistakes, but trust me, a parent in this situation must be approached inthe right way. If we are attaceked and told what a horrible job we are doing, we are defensive. If we are approached with a differnt attitude we are open to hear your advice. BTW it's not always about being lazy. I am not lazy, I am a mother who spent the first 11 years of motherhood, doing all the right things, discipline, involved in school, sports, had very good well balanced children. I then decided to move to another stare, went thru a custody battle in a small little town where I was condemned for leaving to give my children more opportunity. Had teachers, principals and social workers testify on my behalf.Still lost my sons to their father(he feared for their well-being) . I at that point felt everything I had done was wrong. Did I discipline my other children in the same manner? no!! I was terrified ,if I did I would somehow lose them too. I was a complete mental case. I lived for my children the 4 of them were my world, and I didknow what was right and what was wrong.I didn't even care if I lived or died. The only thing that kept me in this world was the graceof God and the 2 I still had. My sons came back to live with me after 18 months, but at that point the damage was done. The younger children had already missed out on that very important point where the base was established from 18 months to3 yrs. I am now reaping what I sowed, and I know that I ultimately am responsible for this. But the only people who truly helped me were the ones who spoketo me in Love and encouragemnet.

I'm simply saying, you do not always know the circumstances, and people cannot change the past, they can only move forward. don't judge them and kick them when they are down. Reach out and help them to see, they can make a difference from this point forward. When you are in that pit you cannot see out!!! If you haven't been there you do not understand!!

Why does everyone assume ( ass-u-me ), that I mean every parent in the world ?  I said the lazy parents I didn't say every parent everywhere is lazy. if you thiught I was refuring to you, there must be some kind of guilt.

How I Got Help

Quote From: labelfree

Liz  I have no Idea What my "true" diagnosis is....I mean they said Bipolar but I think I should go back and actually sit down with some one and wite down what these people actually truly labeled me as....I mean REALLY!  They said I know  Tramatic Brain Injury  Dis  something mood disorder  it was like back in 2002  I am so ticked about that...well at least you know....What meds are you on?  I am on anti depresant mood stablizer  ....Liz your so nice thank you...

Do you feel "stimatized?  Do you tell people when you meet them?  I am in lets just say a bad situation where I live where he is very controlling and on a daily bases he reminds me "how sick I am but I think Im pretty smart..He keeps grinding me down Liz...Desprespectsa my mind   Lowers my confidence..Takes my greatness away..

It is very helpful to keep track of your symptoms that is as you remember them. Also make a chart anda at the end of the day rate what your mood was for that day. After awhile you will see if there is a pattern.  But write everything down !  It is important.  You just have to keep trying till you find a pdoc, that you get along with and wants to help. I have had poor pdoc in my day.   The medications I am taking is :  Abilify, Seraquel, Prozac, Wellbutrin. I am supposed to be taking Lamictal and Clonazepam, but I stopped them on my own. Been off of them for awhile now.   When I want to share to someone that I have a mental illness, I do, otherwise I don't it just depends on the situation.   Most people are accepting but I had one person respond to me wanting an e-pal and as soon as I let him know that I had a mental illness....well it has been 1 1/2 months and I have never heard from him again. So with todays society we have to be cautious about who knows. The media has given mental illness such a bad name that people freak out when they hear the term.  However, on the other hand I am not assamed of having a mental illness and I usually tell people. People seem to think that if you have a mental illness, you have the plague.  But the majority are very likable and sweet people. Why won't TV protray that image !?          Liz

P.S.  I take a total of 22 preshriptions, but the majority is for other problems.

agree to disagree

Quote From: greenbird

Thank you for responding... i would like to make one suggestion....learn the facts and then respond.  I can give you a list of books and articles that can shed alot of light on the subject.  This silver platter which you speak of is interesting.  I would like to point out one thing on that subject.  There is such a thing as white privelege.  White people have many benefits at their disposal and it is sad because many white people do not see these priveleges.  For example, many whites take the fact that they can purchase any home in any location that they can afford for granted.   Being white allows one to be more likely to be shown houses in the nice areas, get good mortgage rates etc. without the nasty burden of discrimination.  Once a white person buys their new home in the nice area they can feel free to jog in their neighborhood without being asked (and i use that term loosely) for identification by the police to prove that they belong there.  I can go on and on and on about white privilege.  Please let me know if you would like to discuss why African Americans are overrepresented in prisons, underrepresented in white collar America, and why there is nothing being served on a 'silver platter'.  These statements are not directed at you and I am sorry if it seems that way.  You are certainly entitled to your opinion, however, I would want someone to enlighten me if I stated something incorrectly.  I feel the purpose of this message board is to learn from each other.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I am not going to argue this for days when we will get no-where.  I am willing to just say that we should agree that we disagree. I stand by what I believe.
