I'm looking forward to the show on hormones today! The more we can get info out to women and anyone around them (husbands, family, co-workers), the better understood we will be.
I read through the slide show and it seems that there's better coverage of REAL people on this show that there was even on Oprah's menopause shows. Instead of celebrities or the same high/profile author/doctor, it's good to see real couples, average people discussing this issue.
I also enjoy Ann Louise Gittleman's viewpoint on the subject because she believes in a basic, natural approach to hormonal changes. She was a good choice for Dr. Phil's 1st show and as I read, it was Robin's suggestion that made it happen. Way to go, Robin!! :) I'm hoping this will be the first of many on this topic because there is no way it can be covered in an hour show, and it's too big of an issue to too many people!
I've notified thousands of minniepauz.com fans and subscribers about the show and I'm sure there will be a huge audience and lots of feedback afterwards! I do hope that Dr. Phil managed to inject some of his humor into the show, although he may have felt just a "bit" out of his element on this one! heheheh....but as most of us know, humor IS the best medicine, especially during those hormonally-challenged times!
I'll be back after the show today!
Best wishes to all....

I'm convinced I started 'the change' with thyroid problems when I was 45-46. My Dr. said there is probably no connection but I don't believe it! Now I'm 53, think I might be thru having periods since it's been 3 months since the last one; up to that time I was still have them approx. every 60 days.
I certainly plan to buy Ann Gittleman's book.
Now I'm 53, on medication for thyroid, 40# overweight & CAN NOT lose more than 5#. I know how to eat healthy & do so. Moderate excersise but it doesn't matter if I excersise daily, I can't lose weight. Tried HRT, didn't make a difference for me, quit it after the HRT scare last summer. Hate the fat on me, have nights sweats, & no interest in sex. If they can invite Viagra why can't they invite something to help women? When the thyroid problems started, I also developed hypertension which means meds for that as well. I feel fairly good but know I'd feel better if I could lose weight & have an interest in sex again. Any suggestions out there?

At age 42 I began having symptoms of menopause AND thyroid problems! The emotional roller coaster of the two combined has wreaked havoc in my life and marriage. It feels like an alien has invaded my body and refuses to leave! I am anxious to try some of the natural remedies discussed by Ann Louise.

I to am 42 years old, have hypothyroidism and am beginning to have signs of menapause. It has been an emotional roller coaster for about 6 months. I take thyroid medication and recently started a mild anti-depressant type med for the other. It seems to help, but I'm going to buy Ann Gittleman's book to see what other alternatives there may be. Hang in there, I'm told it doesn't last forever. I hope.

I am about to turn 37. I have had several symptoms of perimenopause. I'm anxious to try some of Ann Gittleman's remedies but not sure where to start looking for a doctor who will do the testing on saliva and hair follicle's, or where to find a compounding pharmacist? Does anyone have any advice?
Thank you.

If you look up Pharmacy in the yellow pages, you should be able to scan the listings for compound pharmacies. I have a dozen or more in my town, but I am near LA.
If you contact me, I can help you track down what you need. Their is often information in the appendix of books from Gittleman, and Dr. John Lee (also a fantastic resource!)

Hello.
I have been enduring perimenopause symptoms for the last six months. My symptoms may have been brought on by severe chronic stress(cortisone went sky high, most likely). I had to deal with back surgery, recovery,full-time graduate school, and work as researcher for a professor. My ob-gyn told me last August of 2003 that I had high estrogen but didn't do any blood work. I felt like I was pregnant and kept having fuzzy thinking and crying bouts once a week, felt very anxious, and depressed.I still feel like this but not as bad.People think your crazy when you act like this! Most of them don't understand and won't talk about it. They think its in your head. My ob-gyn immediately put me on birthcontrol pills and when I couldn't stand the side effects he then tried the patch and this made everything far worse.I was on the verge of trying antidepressants because everyone thought I was going off the wall complaining about my terrible symptoms. I quit taking the hormones. I bought Dr. Lee's book and started on natural progesterone cream that I ordered over the internet. That gave me some improvement right away. The anxiety and depression were a little better with just a few days use. Natural things take longer to work than synthetic.A big problem is that I can't find a dr. where I live that doesn't want to stick you with the synthetic hormones and antidepressants. I can't even find one who knows what compounding is let alone to do it for me.

How can a compounding pharmacist help if we can't find doctors to cooperate with prescribing appropriate treatment?
Curious about your location...

Tony,
I am just now reading feedback from the menopause/perimenopause shows. I live in Cincinnati and was wondering where in Ohio you are and how all this works. Do you do this compounding in conjunction with my current Dr.? I've never responded to these "chat rooms" so I'm not sure after so many months that you will get this, but it's worth a try.

Dear Tony,
I am just about to turn thirty, just got married but inspite of all the good things happening around me, I am terribly depressed. I have been on it for the last three years because of what the doctor called Endometriosis. It has controlled the pain. The doctor suggested antidepresants and I freaked out. Please tell me about the progestrone treatment and how I can get it from Australia. If not, could I get it off you, what do I need to do? Will it complicate conception (we are hoping to have a baby sometimes in the near future). Your help will trully be appreciated.

I will be 35 in August and have been having hot flases for about a year. They have progressivly gotten worse over the past 5 months. I can have as many as 8-10 a day. I too agree that I need to find a doctor who can treat me and my symptoms. I also liked reading what I could do to help myself.
I however do not have any thyroid problems. I am tested once a year as thyroid problems run in the family. I just think that I am too young to go throught his, but at least there are other young women out there like myself with the same problem

Preovarian Failure

You need to go see a doctor and get tested for high levels of follicle stimulating hormone and your estrogen level. You may have what is called preovarian failure. It has the symptoms of menopause but because of your age, it would be considered this and also you may get your period once in awhile. I was diagnosed when I was 30.

You do need to have your progesterone levels checked. At age 35 you are not to young to have hormonal imbalance. I am a compounding pharmacist with over 7 years of experience in this area. Let me know if I can be of help.

Hi I use "The Medicine Shoppe" here in Kettering - a suburb of Dayton Ohio. They compound hormone replacement cream (topical) It is difficult to find a physician who prescribes alternative meds/compounds. I am fortunate my husband who is a Family Practitioner also does Alternative Medicine, though our insurance will not pay the $65.00 a month for my cream. I think "The Medicine Shoppe" is actually a chain, though individualy owned?
You may call one near you and they can give you the name of a prescribing physician? Good Luck

I finally got the results from the saliva test I had weeks ago. I thought that they give a pres. compounded especially for me. Now I discovered that it is something recommended for women under 52 beginning menopause. I am 56. I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago. I have been on every hormone, patch and recently OTC progesterone cream. It didn't help the flashes or sweats at all. I quit hormones about 3-4 months ago. The dr. said there was alot of estrogen still in my saliva test. IF that is true, why would I have such severe sweats and hot flashes. Doesn't estrogen stop that? It did when I took the pills. I must be the one who will have them all my life. Now I don't know if I should bother with getting the pres. filled Monday or not. I am afraid that I may get a flareup of fibrosystic breasts. They were sore and feeling like they used to with the OTC cream.I had numerous biopsies and aspirates when I was on hormones prior to the hysterectomy. The cream he prescribed isn't a special formula for me at all. Maybe progesterone is what bothers me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Check with a local Chiroprater in your area. They usually are into Nutrition and will have magazines in offices or can refer you to a Nutritional MD who knows how to answer all your questions, do all the test etc. Good Luck,
