I was reading the notes for the overweight brides show tonight. I can't wait to sit down and watch. I can totally relate to Megan and Wesley. I too was like Megan. I used to eat in my car and hide the bags.... throw them away before I got home so if my boyfriend would get into my car he wouldn't know I had been gorging myself. I always felt so bad when I did it. Now keep in mind that when I say "used to" it was not that long ago. I know the shame and disappointment I felt after furiously scarfing down burgers and fries (supersize no less) and I am realizing now that the bad messages I was sending myself were not helping and how they make you feel like you are not worth the struggle to change your weight. I try now not to think about where I am but more so where I am going. I try to think about how good I am feeling physically and emotionally, because now I am proud of myself for deciding to change my life and change my body. Megan if you read this.... I am newly engaged to be married and I can empathize with you. I would love to be support to you as I am on my third week of "my" weight loss challange. Things are going slowly but I'm in it for the long haul. You can do it... Good luck to you...... and thanks for sharing you story.

PS: Dr. Phils message boards and all the concerned people who post messages and reply are the best......

I too relate totally to Megan and her problems in overcoming her weight problem. I eat in secret and them feel totally disgusted with myself. I'm working hard to overcome this problem and I'm really proud of all the overweight brides for having the courage to weigh on national television! If they can find the courage for that, I can overcome my problems.

GOOD LUCK TO MEGAN: I AM IN THE SAME POSITION YOU ARE. I AM A VERY LARGE WOMAN AND FEEL QUITE SELFCONSIOUS ABOUT THAT. I WORK IN A SMALL OFFICE SPACE WHICH MAKES MATTERS A LITTLE MORE NOTICEABLE FOR ME BUT I ASSUME PEOPLE ARE THINKING WHAT I AM FEELING. I ALSO FEEL THAT MY SPOUSE AND CHILD ARE EMBARRASSED OF MY SIZE. SINCE WATCHING THE SHOW I HAVE BOUGHT DR PHILS BOOK AND PRINTED OUT THE RAPID START DIET.
I AM GIVING MYSELF UNTIL JULY 25 MY 2ND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY TO LOSE 50 LBS. I HAVE OVER A HUNDRED TO LOSE. WEIGHT I HAVE GAINED SINCE MEETING MY HUSBAND. I WOULD SURE LIKE TO LOSE IT. SO I AM RIGHT THERE WITH YOU. GOOD LUCK

I was just about to announce that I was not going to watch today's show. While I still find the general topic odious, I am very much relieved to see that these couples are adressing issues that actually have something to do with having a successful relationship.

My, my. I think I'll go draw up a financial template for my next trip to the dollar store. :D

I could so TOTALLY relate to Rachel on today's show - even though I have been married for almost 10 years... I have a three year old and a seven month old. Since getting married, I have steadily gained weight and at the beginning of the month, I was 200 lbs. When I saw that number on the scale, I really got freaked out! My husband, like Rachel's, is thin and it doesn't seem that he had any trouble losing weight when he wants to shed 10 lbs or more. I have felt so self conscious about my weight and I feel embarrassed and like I am an embarrassment. I sometimes wonder what he is doing with me! He wants me to lose weight, but it is hard for him to encourage me without making me feel worse. Somehow, he has a way of putting things that makes me upset, so he has stopped talking about it all together. It had to come to a point where I decided I had to do thi, NO MATTER WHAT. I started the rapid start program on January 4th, and I have lost 6 1/2 pounds already. I am reading The Ultimate Weight Loss Solution and it is really helping. The biggest thing was to make it my priority. I know you can do it too, Rachel!! Maybe you just need to know that YOU ARE WORTH IT!! That is what I had to understand - it isn't for him, or for "them" or anything else - it's for ME, because I want to feel better and look better. I am doing it this time and I will be watching to see how Rachel and the other weight loss challengers do!
      Thank You

        Rachel,
Thank you for being our voice. For the first time in a long time I didn't feel alone about how I was feeling. I too am 180lbs and am letting life go by. My poor husband married this outgoing, trimer woman and I know find it hard to be motivated to do anything. I've felt very much in a funk UNTIL I saw the show. I'll bet its difficult being in front of the nation but remember you represent so many of us. I pray I'm able to get myself out of this horrible funk and make the same changes you are. Good Luck to you I know you will succeed!!! Risa

I may have been able to lose the 50lbs. I had gained during pregnancy, but I share your stagnant and unmotivated story. I am old enough to be your mother, but have a 9 year old. I had worked full time as a nurse for 16 years before I decided to stay at home with my new baby. I might be able to add some hope and some thoughts to "work from". What happened to me was the "hurry up and wait" syndrome. My life had come down to 2 hour increments when I had my new baby. Mothers have to plan their lives around feedings and naps and temperments of their children for a few years. If you want to paint a room you have to be some scheduling nut in order to comlete the job. You cannot leave the house without this little person dictating(by no fault of their own)the schedule. After awhile you just say things like, maybe not or I'll wait until after she eats or tomorrow! I know without a doubt that our baby did not affect my husband in the same manner. I won't fault him for it. He continued his education and goes on business trips and calls to say he will be late. He doesn't get a sitter when he is late. Every time I wanted to leave the house I had to get a sitter. My walls closed quickly. Kids grow quickly. Start planning "your life" now. Get some sitters lined up and budget for them!!!!Work at the 7eleven if you have to just to get started. I think you have lost your autonomy(self). Go out and reclaim that Rachel you once knew. You can do it! It appears as if Chris will support you. Then things just start looking better.
    with warmest regards-

I was just wondering why Kelly was not on the show today? Her Significant other is in military granted- protecting our country. I was just anxious to see a update on her and there was not much on with her. Poor thing is away from her honey until there wedding day...and he has no idea about her being on the show!
Anyway I love ya Kel and rooting for you!!
    Where's Kel?

Like many others, I was wondering why Kelly wasn't on the show today? It seemed like the focus was on a select few of the women and I just don't understand it. I want to see an equal amount of all the women. Kel, go get em'! We are cheering you on here in Illinois!

I know that its a surprise to Kel's future Husband, But I dont think you should keep Kel in Hiding this much. On todays show I must have blinked through Kel's story/update (there wasn't much).
Kel has one of the better stories having her Fiance serving in the United States Navy being on deployment and not having a clue in what is going on. You have all the other women, who have there significant others there to help them, and they know what is going on. While Kel was the only one from the first show with-out the Love of her life there with her.
Lets keep the spice of this over-weight bride special going, and show a little more of Kel working her butt off, to surprise that soon to be Husband that is working is butt off in serving your country.

    SLEEP APNEA!!

Grrrrrrrrrrr! I was really upset today when Dr. Phil talked to the overweight groom about losing weight. The guy said he had been told by his dr. 8 years ago that he had sleep apnea caused by being overweight. This is false & I hate to see people with sleep apnea who are overweight being blamed for this, too. Being over weight can cause sleep apnea symptoms to be worse, but it does NOT cause it! Please research the facts before saying stuff like this!! Now everyone is going to think sleep apnea is caused by being overweight. Totally false information! And Dr. Phil just reinforced this falsehood by asking the guy why he wouldn't lose weight if it meant his sleep apnea would go away. Most likely losing weight will help, but it's NOT going to cure his sleep apnea!
      WRONG, WRONG, WRONG

My husband had graves disease 2 years ago(hyperthyroid) could eat anything and did and never gained weight. His eyes started to swell and his hands shook so he went to see the doctor who said he had graves disease. He was on meds for a year and then the doctor did radioactive iodine to his thyroid (basically killed it) He gained 40 lbs in 2 months and started to snore so loud, the kids woke up. He snored so loud, like he was chocking. He woke up very tired every morning, not just from the dead thyroid but from sleep apnea. His doctor said it would go away when he gets down to 180 lbs. also. He's at 220 lbs now with my help (I put him on weight watchers) and his new meds have kicked in and his thyroid is normal for once. So yes, weight does cause snoring and sleep apnea
I HAVE SLEEP APNEA AND NOT OBESE

After I fell asleep at the wheel of my car (luckily I wasn't hurt) I went to the doctor's to find out why it happened. I was diagnosed with sleep apena. Although I could stand to lose 10 or 20 pounds I am not heavy. The doctor prescribed a dental implant or face mask. I researched the subject on the Internet which said sleeping on your side is better than your back or stomach. I started doing just that and now I sleep better. Overweight is a risk factor, along with being male and over forty. It is not a cause. I too was upset by Dr. Phil's comments.
        Two types...

There are two classes of sleep apnea - Obstructive (OSA) and Central (CSA). Obstructive sleep apnea results from a closing of the upper airway during sleep, usually due to narrowing of the airway or a general "floppyness" to the airway. Obesity quite often contributes to airway narrowing by crowding the internal structures of the neck or simply depositing superficially around the neck where it will press down on the airway when you're laying down.

So in some OSA cases, obesity is a major contributing factor or cause, and weight loss can be therapeutic, depending on the severity of the obstruction.

Central Sleep Apnea has to do with a loss of the neuromuscular drive to respiration, and in general has nothing to do with obesity.

        So everybody's right. :)

I don't know if you will read this but I had a baby 20 months ago(may 03). I weighed in at 186lbs (5on her delivery day. 20 months later, I'm 124lbs. I ate so much when I was pregnant. I also gained 50 lb. with my son 6 years ago and loss that. I breast-feed both babies and every morning I would drive my son to preschool and drive 20 miles, yes 20 miles to a center that had daycare and a aerobics class so I could exercise and someone could watch the baby. I was so big but I worked my big butt off. After the class (which costed 9.00 with daycare and class three times a week) I drove to a weight watchers meeting after that. From July 03 to the following Feb. 04 I loss 30 lb. I stopped doing weight watchers that Feb. because I wanted to join a mommy and me club and loss the weight by myself doing ww at home. I stopped eating fast food which I love so much and knew what every food point was. I don't like sweets but I love pasta and hamburgers. It was hard and I did this on 6 hours of sleep per night with a newborn and a son who has ADHD but I was so motivated to get back into my 6/8 pants and I have. You can do it!!!! I felt so bad about myself when I was fat. I wore big XL shorts from the mens department all summer long after the birth because I didn't want to buy new expensive clothes for myself until I loss the weight. Every 2 months I would buy a size smaller until I could fit into my old shorts. I'm so proud of myself. I went from 186 to 124. It didn't happen overnight but it did happen in 18 months or so. It was slow and steady. I don't believe when women say they can't lose the post baby weight. I did. I see new mom's at the mall so big and they are drinking a big fattening coffee drink from starbucks...hello..you don't do that when you want to lose weight. Have a nonfat latte with equal. Good luck
