I am so excited a group of local boys who are terrifically talented are going to be on Dr. Phil! I can't wait to hear how this happened, it must be quite a story. I am a central Virginia resident who has been a fan of the band Carbon Leaf for years. Richmond, Virginia has been their home base. My hubby and our two kids, 11 and 17, are also big fans. I have been taking the kids to outdoor concerts the band has played around here for years. "Echo Echo" is my favorite CD of theirs. They are the hardest working band you have never heard of, and I was quite surprised to see an article in the local paper that they would be on Dr. Phil. They are really talented and also very nice guys who contribute their performances to local charitable efforts all year round. I hope everyone enjoys their performance.

Carbon Leaf Disappointed

I thought the kids called Carbon Leaf had that polite, perky style common to bands that work the college dance/concert circuit. Wanting to be fair, I gave a listen to a few tunes from their live CD on Amazon.com. Ouch....they had a small, very ordinary sound.
I've seen most of the major rock acts of the past 20 years. If Carbon Leaf is put on the same stage with real heavyweight performers, they'll get embarrassed.

I've been following Carbon Leaf now for 4 years, and believe they are anything but ordinary. I suppose everyone has different tastes, but I really think you're missing something special here. Like you, I've seen most of the major acts of the past 20 years - even longer! and the last performer I was this enthused about - that I followed from the beginning in free shows and high school gyms - was some guy named Bruce Springsteen. If you're looking for 'glitz' - you're right - you're not looking in the right place. If you're looking for talent, you are.

"If Carbon Leaf is put on the same stage with real heavyweight performers, they'll get embarrassed."
Well Carbon Leaf has been on the stage with "real heavyweight performers" (DMB comes to mind) and have been anything but embarrassed. Carbon Leaf has a very rich, intricate quality to their music and I encourage you to check them out more before writing them off so quickly.
I, too, have seen many, many concerts over the past 25 years and must say that a live CL show is something not to be missed. In fact, I know I couldn't make a "top ten" concert list without including at least 2 CL shows, and this is list that would include early U2 and REM.
I realize that everyone has different musical tastes, but I do think you need to hear more than an MP3 from Amazon before making a decision.

I recommend that everyone see Carbon Leaf perform live and in person. They're a bunch of fun and such sweet fellows, not to mention talented and easy on the eyes! Look for them in a town near you...visit their tour page at www.carbonleaf.com (You can also hear songs from their new CD Indian Summer!
Thanks to Dr. Phil for giving Carbon Leaf a place on his show! Kelly, In Seattle
C. Leaf's Problem Today?

I respect the Carbon Leaf boosters (I'm sure there are no family, friends or record label employees among you, of course) who've even ranked them with two of the biggest acts of all time, Springsteen and U2. Those boys must really dominate the stage with raw energy and charisma for you to rank them in such elite company.
So, what went wrong today on Dr. Phil's show? They just stood there like deer blinded in the headlights....it was just, well, dull.
Maybe the answer is that Carbon Leaf now works for Vanguard records which is owned by the Lawrence Welk Group (yes, the old, "and'a one, and'a two..." Lawrence Welk). Welk's family knows that boring has made them tons of money over the years. Do you think maybe they'll loan Carbon Leaf the bubble machine for special effects at their live shows?

Well... I have been a CL fan for over 7 years now and was at first very surprised to see that they would be appearing on Dr. Phil. But hopefully they will recieve new fans out of this.
For those that are ranking them with Springsteen and U2. Nice. I've never seen either, so I can't comment. ;p But CL does, and has for many years now, have a fantastic stage presence. They present a great live show and are very talented.
I'd urge all of you to get the CD... give them another try. Listening to clips from amazon doesn't do them justice IMHO... check out their website (www.carbonleaf.com) - they're starting up a national tour in February and are hitting all(?) major markets... and if ticket prices stay consistent ($8-12 *crosses fingers*), I think it'll be well worth it for all of you guys to give them a listen, go to a show.
True LLO (Life Less Ordinary) is a bit mellow, that might explain the sorta mellow performance... they were also missing a band member... so it did sound different.
In any case, I do hope you'll decide to maybe get their new CD, see if you can go to a show - you may change your mind.
And I second (?) the Thank you's! Thanks to Dr. Phil for having them on!

Dr.Phil
I think that your guest need to think before they decide to persue their dreams. if they have children then their children should come first not their dreams. if their children want them to push for their dream of if their spouse or friend or family wants them to persue and push for their dream then they should. if they don't want then to then they are probablly saying that so that they don't get hurt really bad by someone they audition from. that is how i feel.
sincerly

PUSH FOR THE STARS!

If it weren't for the courageous people who pushed forwarded with their dreams regardless of what others thought about them or their abilities then we wouldn't have a "Brad Pitt","Julia Roberts" or "cheryl crow". Everybody loves a star when they become stars but for some reason everybody as a critical opinion for the ones pursuing; funny. It's also funny how some stars try to deter others from pushing forward with their dream even though they have selfishly struggled to get to the top themselves; I think it's the only career (acting/singing) where the ones who have made it discourage and dapen peoples spirits in the pursuit of self-interest... maybe their afraid of the competition! Congrats to you all who are living your dream. Good Luck.

I definitely am one to support people pursuing their dreams. It's important to be happy and to have the career that you want.
But you have to be realistic, too. Christie doesn't have strong enough singing skills to make it - I know because I am at the same level as Christie. I have a great voice for local work, for church choirs, for school plays - but for not much more. I recognized my limits and put aside my dreams of being a professional singer. I still sing of course, for my own enjoyment, but not for pay.
Christie - please be honest with yourself and take the professional criticism to heart. Don't waste time and perhaps your marriage on something that may not be attainable. Good luck!

I am in total agreement. When she said that she was unprepared and short notice, well, that showed me that she really isn't ready for professional work. It really does take many years of practice and hard work. I had dreams of being a concert pianist and ended up with 17 years of lessons. I realize I didn't have "IT", whatever "IT" is, so now I use my talents for many other uses. Some pay very well and other things I do for free. Playing in a coliseum was a biggie for me...even if it was just accompanying a choir! I applaud that she tried, now she needs to get real and accept her lot in life. There are tons of places to use her voice, like you said, church, local shows, etc. but this lady will never be a star. One of the Nashville Star candidates is a relative of my husband and while we all wanted her to win, I knew she didn't have "star" quality of some of the others. But, she's making it great as a backup, meeting great stars, and having a blast doing so. Her day may not be over since she's been on the scene a long time and knows "who's who".
Christie needs to see that most of us have had dreams of being something that didn't pan out, but most of us make the best possible life we have. If I were to give advice to her, I'd have to say, start staying home, forget the band, and realize that she has a good life. Blaming her lack of stardom on her husband is totally wrong. My husband definitely didn't keep me from Carnegie Hall, but he sure supports me when I play locally!

Cristie it is great to have dreams and everybody should have something to dream about but you can't let it consume your life, when truthfully, your voice isn't that good or you don't have an unusual sound, or look, or presence. Be glad you have a loving husband and children that need you because that is where you can really be a star. At home with those babies that need their Mama.Start a new dream for your life, one that includes the family.

Christies expectations of having a musical career are unrealistic. She needs to get over herself. Her ability to take feedback is clearly no better than her ability to sing and anyone in the business would laugh at the excuse of not being prepared, how much prep does it take to know how to clap to the music? I feel very sorry for her husband,it must be exhausting being required to continually stoke a very misguided over blown ego.

I'm not so sure what we saw was a true presentation of Christie's ability. Obviously she wasn't prepared. She wasn't even dressed like she would for a "gig". She did say that she would like to go to Nashville to have the opportunity to develop more, not to be an overnight success.
And luck seems to be a really big factor in becoming successful. Sometimes I wonder how many of the singers who have CD's even got to that point. Some seem to sound like they have more luck than talent.
Anyway, good luck to anyone pursuing a similar career! I envy your talent and your determination!

I think this woman takes herself too seriously. She doesn't even look like she enjoys it when she is singing. However...I say keep doing it Christie and lighten up a bit. Life is not about 'making it' what ever that means..it'a about creating and having joy bubble up. Where ever you go there you are and I think the advice you got was bang-on. I can see you need to gig WAY more and learn how to connect and enjoy it for yourself, then it will roll baby. Stay in Dayton and ROCK out...the universe rewards action, not excuses & complaining.
