Bo, 17, has been arrested six times in two months, and charged with two DUI felonies. After he totaled his first car, his parents bought him a new one. He then totaled that car after allegedly inhaling air duster and running into cement posts.
When Bo's parents, Jackie and Darren, turn to Dr. Phil for help, he tells them: "There are some fundamental principles of life, such as: you don't reward bad behavior. If somebody comes along and they trample your flowers, do you go out and give them five bucks? No, you don't reward bad behavior! You reward behavior you want to reoccur. You withhold reward from behavior you do not want to reoccur."
He tells Jackie, who has bailed Bo out of jail more than once, "That's a reward!" The message she's sending is, "You do something bad, I'll come and bail you out. I will get you out of trouble. I will make sure you don't have to suffer the consequences."
Jackie confirms, "We always bail him out every time he's in trouble."
"So he has yet to suffer any consequences!" Dr. Phil reiterates.
Dr. Phil follows up: "So let me get this right. He gets in this car drunk, high, and runs over a man in the road. A week later, you put him back in this 5,000-pound weapon and put him back out on the street?"
"Yes sir," responds Jackie.
"What the hell are you people thinking?" Dr. Phil asks. "So here we've got a kid addicted to drugs, drinking, under age, caught with a mass amount of drugs, and a week later you turn him loose in a car. What could possibly go wrong?"
"It's scary when you put it that way," says Jackie.
"Is there any other way to see it?" Dr. Phil responds. "You are intelligent people and you are doing stupid things."
How can Jackie and Darren help turn their child's life around? Hear Bo's point of view and Dr. Phil's plan on Wednesday's show.
