Jailhouse Interview: Kentucky Teen Accused In Crime Spree Says He Was Engaged To 13-Year-Old

          May 30, 2016

Teenage sweethearts, dubbed by some as a “modern-day Bonnie and Clyde,” made headlines in early 2015 when they allegedly embarked on a two-week interstate crime spree involving stolen vehicles, destroyed property and forged checks.

In an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil from a Grayson County Detention Center in Leitchfield, KY, 18-year-old Dalton Hayes shares why he says he ran away with his 13-year-old girlfriend, how he says he was mischaracterized in the media, and why he says he called his mom crying just two days prior.

Hayes, who claims he went on the run with his girlfriend because he was in love with her and wanted to keep her safe from her family, admits to Dr. Phil that the plan was not well-thought through.

“What I did was not smart by no means. I could have went about it a million different ways,” he says. “Some people think it was a bad thing because she’s 13. I had no clue she was 13. I did not know nothing about it. She advised me the day she left my house that she was 13 years old, that she was in school. And, the only thing I knew to do was to protect her and keep her safe, and that’s what I did.”

“Were you engaged?” Dr. Phil asks.

          “Yes,” he replies.
