Adoption Language
Laurie, an adoptive mom, wrote Dr. Phil a letter regarding the words he used when talking about adoption on the "Dr. Phil Family" series: "My children, Sara, age 3 and Will, 11 months, came into our family at birth through private, non-agency adoptions and their birth mothers thoughtfully made adoption plans and lovingly placed their babies with us. When Alexandra delivered her baby, I was disappointed to hear you say Alexandra's decision was to "keep the baby." Keeping a baby is an event, choosing to parent a child is a lifelong commitment. Please change your language to reflect the true nature of adoption. It is a compassionate and loving act and it's a valid means to create a family."
Dr. Phil did his homework, and promised to make every effort to discipline his language in the future.
