Criteria for a Diagnosis of Psychosis

Dr. Phil says that too often, people with mental disorders are unfairly stigmatized. Below is the criteria for a diagnosis of psychosis.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, IV-R (284-285), the "psychotic" disorder is basically referred to as a schizophrenia label. The criteria are:

A) Two or more of the following:  
1. Delusions
2. Hallucinations
3. Disorganized speech
4. Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
5. Negative symptoms  

B) Social/Occupation dysfunction  

C) Duration of symptoms for at least six months  

D) Schizoaffective and mood disorders exclusions
 
E) Substance abuse exclusion
