Body language speaks volumes. In fact, only 7 percent of communication is verbal, and 93 percent is nonverbal. Make sure the messages you think you’re sending are being interpreted the way you want. Here’s how Dr. Phil suggests you do that.

          • Take time in the morning to ask yourself: “What kind of statement am I making to the world today?” It comes across differently, for example, if you’ve got a mohawk or a suit on.
          • Pay attention to your voice quality and whether or not you make eye contact. People respond to both, and you can change them.
          • For every thought you have, there’s a physiological reaction in your body. So when you’re depressed, angry or happy, you may be telling others volumes without speaking a word.
          • You never get a second chance at first impressions. And they can really matter. Treat them as such.
          • Your deeds speak louder than your voice or any non-verbal communication.
          • Recognize that your partner’s “filters” will fill in the blanks. Try to understand how your actions may be interpreted when you’re vague.
          • Test your non-verbal cues with a friend.
