Adoption Scams, Part 2: Taylor and Tatum

Adoption Success Story

Dr. Phil returns to the stage in shirtsleeves. "I had a coat somewhere. What happened?" he jokes. Turning to Marie, he asks, "How are you doing?"

"OK," she says through tears.

He asks the women if they feel better, and they each say yes.

"Well, let me add something to this saga here," says Dr. Phil, turning to Jen. "You said something powerful in that room. You said, 'You didn't stop me.'"

"She didn't," Jen confirms.

"And I am so glad, and God bless you for taking that child from Guatemala, who is a precious, precious child. You can't give your power away to someone like that and let them stop you from doing it. I know you've been burned, but you can't let it stop you. If you do, you're letting her run your life. Do you know what I'm saying, Crissy? You're letting her run your life. You're letting her run your life."

"I don't think she'll stop me," says Marie, "but she's got me paranoid that the next one that comes around, I'm going to be " you know?"

"Well, reinforcements have arrived," says Dr. Phil. "We've traveled down a similar road here at Dr. Phil before."

When Alex from the Dr. Phil Family was considering putting her baby up for adoption, she met with three potential adoptive couples. After the show, each of the adoptive couples appeared on DrPhil.com so that potential birth mothers could contact them.

Tiffany says, "When we met with Alexandra to discuss adoption, I don't think that we had any idea that it could come to this. Right after the show aired, we ran to our e-mail and it was the most exciting moment of our lives."

"We were looking at each other and we were like, 'Is this real?'" adds Tiffany's husband, Paul. "We decided to adopt two babies from two separate birth mothers."

"Seeing Tatum for the first time was so emotional," says Tiffany.

Three weeks later, Taylor came into their lives. "We've got two of the most beautiful, healthy little girls at home with us now. Sixty seconds or whatever it was that we were on the show has changed our lives forever."

"That is absolutely amazing, and those children are beautiful!" exclaims Dr. Phil. "Oh, my gosh!"

"That was us, Dad!" shouts one of Paul and Tiffany's daughters after seeing herself on video.

Dr. Phil introduces Tiffany and Paul, and their two little girls, Taylor and Tatum, "Now, how are you guys doing? Like I've got to ask.

Look at these precious children."

"We're busy," says Paul, who scrambles to keep his squirming daughter in check.

"He doesn't have any hair!" she says about Dr. Phil.

"I don't have any hair?" Dr. Phil repeats lightheartedly. "Take it from me as a professional, when she's 12, ground her for a month, will you?"

Turning to the women onstage, he says, "Now, when we were working with Alex, the Dr. Phil Family, she was considering placing Nathan for adoption and then decided as a birth mother to keep the child, but all three of the couples who we had on the show who were interviewing with her as potential adoptive parents for the child " we put them on our Web site, we went through all the proper things " just got a tremendous response, and all three of those couples got wonderful and precious children and Tiffany and Paul, of course, got two children from two different birth mothers."

Dr. Phil continues, "We want to tell you that we want to offer to put both of y'all on our Web site as we did before and help start this process of having each of you to find children to adopt, if and when you say you're ready to do that, which I hope is like yesterday before noon, but it will be whenever you want to do that, because I want both of you to be sitting down here with these crawling all over you like these two are." Turning to Tiffany and Paul he asks, "Any regrets at all?"

"Oh my gosh, no," says Tiffany. "And we first just want to say we are so sorry for all the pain that you have all been through, and we all have a separate story, and a separate journey for adoption, but do not let it stop you because it is the most beautiful, amazing experience that we have ever experienced in our lives. And because of Dr. Phil we have these two precious girls here, and [producers] Julie and Christopher, and everybody else here at the show."

Turning to the women, Dr. Phil says, "All right, so, my question is will you let us help you through this process?"

"You should already have me up!" says Marie.

"Well, it will happen right away," he tells her. "Crissy, will you let us help you through this process?"

After a thoughtful pause, Crissy nods deeply and says, "Yeah."
