Braxton Family Values: marriages

Rocky Relationships
Mom Evelyn, 64, joins her daughters onstage. She says that you marry for love the first time, but by the time you get to be her age, “You marry for other reasons,” like companionship. “When you’re young, you’re into it. You think he’s the greatest thing since peanut butter, and he can do no wrong,” she says. “By the time you get to be my age, you’re mature. You know life, and so on and so forth. You move on.”

“A little scorned, Mommy?” Toni asks. “A little angry,” she adds.

“Why would I be angry?” Evelyn asks. “They have love, and look at them,” she says about her daughters. “There’s always something, for God’s sake.”

“Have you been married twice?” Dr. Phil asks Trina, and she says yes. “And [how is it] the second time?”

“It’s still a mess,” she confesses. She says she married her second husband for love.

“So, you love the mess?” Dr. Phil asks.

“I love the man; I don’t love the mess,” she replies.

[AD]“She loves the mess, because she keeps going back to the same mess, over and over and over again,” Tamar says.

Trina says her marriage went downhill after she found out that her husband, Gabe, was “cyber unfaithful,” and put a tracking device, or spyware, on her cell phone.

Trina explains her husband’s cyber cheating. Will a statement from Gabe get him off the hook?

Dr. Phil weighs in on Trina’s marital problems.
Towanda admits that she and her husband, Andre, are in an open marriage with a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. “Mommy always taught us that every man cheats except for President Obama, because if he cheated, then everybody would know about it,” she says.

“You need to know the history behind this,” Tamar interjects. She explains that her parents were married for 35 years, and her father had a mistress for 11 years.

Dr. Phil asks Towanda to explain her don’t ask, don’t tell policy. “If he has five girls around town, you just don’t ask?” he asks.

“I don’t,” Towanda replies. “Nobody can come home to meet my children, nothing like that,” she clarifies.

“Do you have boyfriends?” he asks her, and she says no.

“I don’t have time,” Towanda responds.

[AD]“She wouldn’t tell on the show, Dr. Phil,” Toni says, while Towanda smiles.

“You have don’t ask, don’t tell with him; you and I didn’t make that deal,” Dr. Phil jests.

“I don’t know what he’s doing; I just know what I’m doing,” Towanda says. She admits that she doesn’t have any other romantic partners.

“The fish wouldn’t get caught if he didn't open his mouth,” Evelyn says. “Some things you have to reserve for yourself. You don’t have to put everything out there.”
