Competitive Parents: Linda Armstrong

Competitive Parents: Linda Armstrong
Lance Armstrong's mother, Linda Armstrong, shares the parenting tips that helped her nurture a champion.

"That drive and determination that Lance has started at a very, very young age," says Linda Armstrong Kelly, mother of five-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong. "I had Lance when I was 17 and was totally responsible for raising him."

Explaining how having a healthy attitude helped, Linda says, "The only things in our vocabulary were positives ... To push Lance into something he didn't want to do just wasn't effective. When he was a child, he always set his own goals. He would always say, 'This was my time in the last race and I think I can beat that time.'"

Linda continues, "I taught Lance early on it's OK to make mistakes. With mistakes, you learn ... He also knew I believed in him. I never gave up on him ... It was always very disturbing for me to see parents on the sidelines. I saw some pretty abusive circumstances. I think the best way to help your child is to love them, nurture them, and help channel their energies. I always tried to make him feel like he had the very best. And it worked!"
