Dr. Phil's Get Real Retreat Update: Wade

A Shameful Past

After dealing with the guilt, shame and anger over the abuse he's endured, Wade says his life has completely changed. He says he now feels free and open, and no longer lives in shame and silence.

With a big smile on his face, Wade tells Dr. Phil, "I'm doing really good. The retreat was a life-changer, to say the least. It was amazing, it was hard " very hard " it took a lot of guts, but I'm really glad I've done it, and since then, I challenged everything in my life, even in the peripherals of my life. It's been amazing."

"What was the hardest thing for you through that whole process?" Dr. Phil asks.

"For me, I lived my entire life in a state of denial or deceit, because you deal with the shame, the guilt, and so it was just a matter of stepping up, and being honest and telling the big secret that I've been holding in my life," he says.

Dr. Phil says, "There are so many people right now who are living with the kind of shame, the burden, the things that they are so afraid for people to find out, and you crossed that barrier, and you've come out the other side with a sense of freedom and a sense of strength. Why did you do it?"

[AD]"A couple of reasons, Dr. Phil," he says. "For one, I felt like my life was a massive failure. I failed at my marriage, I was failing at my spiritual walk, and I always felt like I had this secret, so what I wanted to do is I wanted to completely blow up my secret, and what better way than do it in front of 10 million people? Another reason, as you know, I actually told your staff three times, ‘No, I don't want to do it,' and then when I finally did, I realized that I have nothing to lose, everything to gain, let's give it a shot."

"They wanted you to be here because they sensed the pain in you that we see in that picture right there," Dr. Phil says, indicating an image of Wade from the retreat. "You don't look that way anymore."

"No," Wade says with a smile.
