Meddling Mother-in-law

Meddling Mother-in-law
Tara says her husband's mom intrudes on their lives.
After Dr. Phil leaves the room, Kathy, Tara and Steve share their reactions.

"This is not what I wanted to happen. I wanted them to come closer, not farther apart. And I certainly didn't want to hear that on national TV," Kathy cries.

Tara doesn't believe Steve is sorry. "I don't think he regrets it because I think he knows it's the only way out," she says. "There will be no more starting over. I have wasted too much time with him."

Kathy turns on her son. "Is there a reason why you brought us on national TV to say, 'I cheated on my wife?'" she asks. "Was there something about Dr. Phil that made you decide to confess all of a sudden?"

Steve says, "I wanted to be honest to Dr. Phil so he could give us an honest opinion on whether or not he can help us. That's why!"

Tara wants to get her life together. "I think I have to fix me before I can be with anybody," she says. In tears, she continues, "I don't know if I should keep doing this. How many times do I have to get kicked down before I say, 'Enough is enough!'"
Then, Steve drops another bombshell ... he's in the midst of an affair right now.

"I'm in shock. I'm angry. I can't believe I was so foolish," Tara says.

Steve admits his guilt. "I just wanted to come clean. I think I just wanted to punish myself," he says.

Kathy acknowledges her role in the conflict. "That was wrong on my part to think that I could make them live happily ever after," she says. "He's telling me that things have been pretty bad for a while with them. So, I guess mothers don't always know what their sons are thinking."

Tara just wants to get on with her life. "Dr. Phil said I need to get a backbone. He said that I need to get my own self-confidence, and it's true," she cries. "I have kids that can't have a mother like this. I need somebody strong, a good role model for them."
