Relationship Rescue Retreat: Infidelity: Dyad Exercise
Dr. Phil continues his intense workshop with six couples on the verge of divorce.
The first step in forgiveness is acknowledging all the wrongdoing. During the retreat, Dr. Phil has the couples arrange themselves into sitting dyads, facing each other. He instructs the wives to stand up. "I want you to tell your husband the thing or things that you have done in this marriage that you are most ashamed of. The things that you feel the most guilty about. And husbands, when you feel in your heart that she is being honest, and she is truly, truly sorry, then you stand up for her. Ladies, go."

Kimberly tells Mike: "I'm sorry that I push you away. By not having sex with you or by pushing you away and telling you that I don't need it or I don't want it, and that's what you need most, and I'm sorry."

Nora tells Paul: "I'm ashamed of how I treat you. The lack of respect, and for just being so mean, so angry and so bitter about everything, every day, all the time."

Deanna tells Rob: "I'm sorry for withholding intimacy because I didn't feel worthy. I'm sorry for making you feel like you're incapable. And it scares me to think you might not need me."
Jennifer tells Eric: "I'm sorry for making you feel stupid. And I'm sorry for having things have to be my way all the time. And I'm sorry for not letting you comfort me."

"No, Jennifer," says Eric, who stands up and hugs her, signifying that he believes that she's sorry. "You know I love you, sweetheart," he tells her.

Gelsy tells Rene: "I'm truly sorry for not showing you any emotion. And I degrade you and I do it to attack you because of all the issues that I have. And I'm truly sorry about everything that I've done."

"Are you true to me?" Rene asks.

"I'm very true to you," she responds.

Donna tells Vinnie: "I'm ashamed of yelling at you all the time. And I'm ashamed of what it looks like, and what I look like doing it. I feel angry about what happened, I feel angry about what you did, and then I put that picture on the Internet."One by one, all the husbands stand and hug their wives.

Then it's the husbands' turn. "Women," Dr. Phil says, "when you truly know that he is in fact feeling the shame and the genuine remorse and sorrow, then you stand up for him, and not before."

Paul tells Nora: "I'm ashamed for the way that I treat you. I'm ashamed for raging. I'm ashamed for ever putting my hands on you. I'm ashamed for calling you the names that I have. I'm ashamed for kissing the girls that I've kissed. I'm ashamed of the fact that I might've lost the best thing in my life."

Mike tells Kimberly:
"I'm most ashamed of not being emotionally available at all, for you and for the kids. I'm sorry for calling you names, being disrespectful to you. I'm sorry I'm not home where I need to be. I'm sorry that I haven't given you all the love that you need."

Rob tells Deanna: "I'm so ashamed of my drinking problem. You have brought it up in the past and I've shrugged it off. I'm ashamed of how I treat our kids. I am ashamed at how poorly I treat you romantically."Vinnie tells Donna: "I'm sorry for the disrespect and the names. I'm very, very sorry for what happened last summer. I didn't mean to hurt you. I'm sorry for not helping out with the baby enough."

Eric tells Jennifer: "I'm sorry for the nights I've come home drunk and a bastard. I'm sorry for not supporting you, Jennifer, for not being there. I'm sorry for when you ask me to hold you and I turn away like a boy, not realizing that my wife needs me, and I need to be there."

Jennifer stands and wipes away Eric's tears.

"I'm sorry that you feel pain," Eric continues. "I guarantee you that we won't live the same lives. I won't let that happen."

Rene tells Gelsy: "I'm so sorry, for being the a**hole that I can be. For finding every excuse to not be inside the house. I have disrespected you to the fullest. I give you my word, I will never disrespect you again. You mean the world to me."

Wiping tears from her eyes, Gelsy stands and hugs Rene.

One by one, all of the wives stand up for their husbands.
