A Deadly Love Affair: The Widow, The Lover and a Spouse Behind Bars

          August 25, 2015

In 2011, Ashlee’s husband, Emmett, was having an affair with a co-worker named Kandi when he was shot and killed by Kandi’s husband. The story made headlines and left two families forever changed. Kandi’s husband, Rob, who claimed he acted in self-defense, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

For the first time in four years, Ashlee and Kandi come face to face on Dr. Phil’s stage. What happened that fateful night?

          Deadly Affair
Authorities say that on March 11, 2011, Rob, armed with a gun, confronted Emmett and Kandi in a drugstore parking lot. A struggle ensued, and Rob shot Emmett twice, killing him. Rob suffered a graze wound to the head.

Was it self-defense, or was it murder? Kandi was the closest witness, but she testified that she was walking away, toward her car, when she heard three gunshots. She said she turned around to find both men covered in blood.

          Ashlee vs. Kandi
Ashlee recalls the night of Emmett’s death, which she says followed months of trouble in their once-“perfect” marriage. She says she asked Emmett, the father of her five children, to stay home, so they could figure things out. Ashlee says she had no idea Emmett was having an affair with Kandi until police revealed the details of his fatal shooting.

“The hardest thing to hear from Kandi was holding Emmett in her arms as he died,” Ashlee says. “I wanted to scream, ‘You don’t have the right to watch him take his last breath. He wasn’t yours.'”

Kandi says, “I strayed, but that does not define who I am.” She says her own marriage was in trouble, and getting attention from Emmett, a younger man, was exciting. She also says she wasn’t Emmett’s only affair — something she says she learned at trial. “I did not ruin that family, but I’m the only one [Ashlee] blames for everything,” Kandi says.

Ashlee and Kandi come face to face. “You didn’t break me,” Ashlee says.

Kandi to Ashlee: “When are you going to stop nailing me for everything?”

“You had an affair with her husband, and he wound up getting murdered, and you seem highly offended by this whole thing.”

“What do you think happened that night?”
