Etiquette: Re-gifting

"Peggy, what is the etiquette on recycling gifts?"

"Always say 'thank you' even if you don't like the gift, that's so important. And you don't have to lie and say 'Oh, this is my favorite thing.' You can always find something positive to say ... As far as recycling, in one word, sometimes it's OK. You have to really take into consideration if you're going to hurt the feelings of the gift-giver or the gift-receiver. So, sometimes it's all right to recycle a gift."

"But you don't tell them do you?" asks Dr. Phil.

"Of course not," says Peggy. "You want to make sure that the person who gave you the gift isn't going to realize that."

Dr. Phil asks, "So, it's etiquette to be sneaky?"

"Yes, it can be that you're making that person feel good," says Peggy. "However, on recycling a gift, if it's a one-of-a-kind gift, if it's something that Aunt Sue made for you, or if you think that the person would look for it, don't give it away. So, it's a judgment call. Sometimes it's OK. When in doubt, don't do it. Be thoughtful about it."
