Today’s Takeaway: Questionable Behavior? Focus On ‘Why’ Not ‘What’

Ever since Shirley kicked her 19-year-old daughter, Marie, out of the house for voting for Hillary Clinton, she says Marie has been living a dangerous life, drinking, doing drugs and, and making money as a sugar baby. Marie’s behavior goes against Shirley’s strict Catholic rules of the house, and Shirley says she doesn’t know where she went wrong with Marie, because her older sons, Jan and Scott, do not engage in these behaviors.

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Know someone with outrageous behavior?

Jan says he feels responsible for Marie’s rebellion because he molested Marie when they were children – an act for which he has apologized and been forgiven.

After the show, Dr. Phil shares his thoughts and offers advice on how you can help someone change their behavior.

“If you want to change behavior, you’ve got to get a grip on why that behavior is happening,” Dr. Phil says. “If somebody’s doing something consistently, they’re doing it in a pattern; they’re getting some kind of payoff for it.”

He suggests first getting to the root of the behavior and then when encouraging change, don’t be judgmental. “You don’t want to be right; you want to be happy and to be happy, you’ve got to meet her where she is and inspire her to change, not demand her to change,” he says.

What To Do If You See Warning Signs A Person Is At Risk For Suicide

Recently, the news has been filled with stories of celebrity suicides – but they are by far not the only people who die by suicide. Since 1999, the rate of suicide deaths has increased by 25% in the United States. It has been reported that 90% of the victims have a mental illness at the time; however more than 50% were never diagnosed and did not receive help.

WATCH: Suicide Is A Leading Cause Of Death In The United States; What’s Causing People To Take Their Own Life?

Dr. Phil, along with Coach Mike Bayer, offers steps to take if you see the warning signs that someone you know – or yourself – may be at risk for suicide.

  1. Talk about it
  2. Ask direct, specific questions, avoiding bias or judgment
  3. Have an action plan and resource – provide the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) or a counselor to get the person help so they are not left alone
  4. Do not trivialize
  5. Be prepared to listen
“Being a compassionate ear and hearing what they have to say can make the difference between life and death,” Dr. Phil says.
  6. Don’t keep secrets – if you’re concerned about a friend, let somebody know. You may just save his or her life.
  7. Don’t give up. Follow up and check in with the person constantly.
“If you’re seeing these warning signs, don’t be afraid that you’re going to suggest someone into killing themselves; that’s not going to happen,” Dr. Phil says.

Tasha says her daughter, Sierra, was a problem child from the start of her life.

Growing up, Tasha claims Sierra was no stranger to trouble. Mom Claims 17-Year-Old Daughter Lies, Manipulates, And ‘Will Steal Whatever She Wants’

Warning Signs Someone Is At Risk For Suicide

The recent deaths of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade have started a much-needed dialogue about suicide — the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S. — and mental health in America.

Oftentimes when someone takes their own life, it leaves their loved ones and friends wondering why — and wondering if they missed indications that the person was suffering.

WATCH: Suicide Is A Leading Cause Of Death In The United States; What’s Causing People To Take Their Own Life?

Dr. Phil, who is joined by Coach Mike Bayer, shares warning signs of someone who is at risk for suicide to be aware of in others – and yourself.

“These are recognizable; this doesn’t come out of the blue,” Dr. Phil says.

Coach Mike adds, “I think a lot of people are confused because a lot of people say, ‘I saw no sign.’ But there may have been signs they just didn’t look for.”

Warning Signs
  • Talking about suicide as an option
  • Researching ways to kill themselves
  • They feel or talk about hopelessness
  • Feeling like a burden to others
  • Feeling trapped, backed into a corner, legal or financial problems, disappointed people in life and can’t fix the situation, unbearable pain
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, church, activities – pulling back from life altogether, sleeping more, self-medicate with drugs or alcohol
  • Telling people goodbye
  • Giving away prized possessions
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Shame, anger and rage
  • Prior suicidal behavior
  • Engaging in high-risk behavior
  • Substantial shift to positive for no observable reason
“You are not alone,” Dr. Phil emphasizes. “There are alternatives.”

In the video above, hear more of the warning signs and learn about environments that may contribute to someone wanting to end their life. And, learn about the contagion effect.

Suicide Is A Leading Cause Of Death In The United States; What’s Causing People To Take Their Own Life?

With the recent high-profile suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and before that Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, and Robin Williams, it seems that suicide has become a pattern in society.

The shocking reality is that, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is now a leading cause of death in the United States, and rates have increased 25% since 1999. And, the CDC reports that 54% of people who die by suicide have no known history of mental illness.

“It doesn’t mean they don’t have mental illness; it means because they have no history of mental illness that means they haven’t been in treatment. They’ve had mental illness most likely but have not been treated for it,” Dr. Phil says during a conversation with Coach Mike Bayer. “So they’ve either had an untreated mental illness, or they have encountered some kind of acute stress, grief, abuse, some romantic breakdown, some financial crisis.”

The World Health Organization reports that 90% of the people who take their life did have a mental illness at the time that they did it, which Dr. Phil says means that it wasn’t a rational decision.

“They weren’t thinking mentally and emotionally clearly at the time that they took their lives,” Dr. Phil makes clear. “Taking your own life is not something that’s done by rational people; it’s something that’s done by people who are suffering from mental illness, half of which never ask for help.”

Hear more in the video above, including the psychology of what may drive a person to want to end their own life.

Today’s Takeaway: The Solution Lies In Defining The Problem

John claims that his 12-year-old son Jack is possessed by evil forces that are instructing the boy to kill his family. He says he’s so concerned that he started preparing for an exorcism. He claims to have a team in place ready to rid his son of evil because, if he doesn’t, then he may not be able to prevent the mass murder of his family or the unthinkable: he, himself, harming his own son in order to protect others.

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Have a family drama that needs Dr. Phil’s help?

John’s ex-wife Jen says there is no way on earth she is going to let their son go through an exorcism because he is not possessed and says her out-of-control son is mentally ill. Jen claims the main issue is John, who she says uses harsh means, including spankings, to discipline their child.
