When Aaron Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison in 2013 for the murder of Odin Lloyd, he was engaged to his high school sweetheart, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, and they had a young daughter, Avielle. During his four years behind bars, Jenkins-Hernandez said they visited him often and tried to remain positive about their drama-filled lives.

In the video above from Jenkins-Hernandez’s exclusive interview with Dr. Phil, the young woman describes Hernandez’s relationship with Avielle.
“I wouldn’t say it was normal; it was her normal,” Jenkins-Hernandez says. “As far as their interaction, it was unbelievable. She was very much a Daddy’s girl.”
They would color and play cards together during their weekly visits. “He was absolutely in love,” she continues. “When we were all together, he was focused on her … When she was there, she took over.”

Hernandez died in prison on April 19, 2017 in what authorities say was a suicide, five days after he was acquitted of a double murder. He was in the process of appealing his 2013 conviction.
