Rumors began to spread about the substitute teacher and the student she says she believed she was in love with. Then, one of Haglin’s female pupils - a high school junior named Tya - says she noticed what she describes as “suspicious” behavior between the two. Tya claims she witnessed her schoolmate going into Haglin’s room between classes; closing the door behind him.
“On her birthday she received flowers from him,” claims the young woman. “I started thinking something might be happening, but because I looked up to Miss Haglin – I didn’t want to believe it. “
Eventually, Tya went to her mother, Rebecca, with her concerns about Haglin.
“My daughter said ‘Ma, there’s some very strange things going on in the classroom,’” Rebecca recalls. She says she then asked Mary Beth about the rumors. “She said ‘yes it’s true.’“
There was more to Haglin’s confession. “She kept telling me that she was in love with this young man,” says Rebecca. “That as soon as he graduated – they were going to get married.”
Tya says she was disappointed in Haglin who until that point, had been one of her favorite educators. “Mary Beth was a teacher. She was 24 years old. You should know better.”
In the video above, Rebecca says after she confronted Mary Beth she had the teacher write down the details of her relationship with the 17-year-old. She says she then used that information to report Haglin to school officials.
Following an investigation by the district, Haglin was fired from her teaching job in May 2016. She currently faces one misdemeanor count of sexual exploitation of a minor. If convicted, Mary Beth Haglin could receive a sentence of up to two years behind bars, and be required to register as a sex offender for up to 10 years.
