Toxic Mother/Daughter Relationship?
“Growing up, my mother was extremely physically abusive,” says Amber, 24, about her mother, Julie. “When I was 7 years old, she picked up a remote and threw it at me. To this day, I can still feel the bump in my ear.”
Julie admits she remembers a time when she threw dishes when she was upset, but says, “After that one incident, I was never physical with my children.” Julie claims Amber once put her in a choke hold, grabbed her car keys and took off. The police were called that day, and Julie says they reprimanded Amber.
“As I got older, I started fighting my mom back,” Amber says. “I’ve stopped my mom – hit her, punched her. Our relationship is extremely toxic and at this point, I don’t want her in my life.”
Julie says she doesn’t understand why Amber recently cut her out of her life and is keeping her grandchildren from her. “I have no idea why this happened. I was completely blindsided by this,” Julie says.
Amber says she’s been holding a grudge against her mother since she was 9. “I felt really abandoned and really alone.”
Julie says she knows what it’s like to be abused. Dr. Phil notes a similarity in how these women describe their childhoods.
“You’re a little stiff. I kind of want to mess up your hair.”
