“I want to be around gang members. I enjoy it. I just love danger. I just love trouble, and I just can’t get away from it,” says Kate.

The 19-year-old who grew up in a white, middle-class neighborhood says she’s now homeless and living on the street since her mom kicked her out.

“I want to do what I want to do and if it doesn’t go my way, I get angry. I start yelling. Sometimes, I start crying. I black out sometimes where I don’t even know what I’m doing,” the teen says. “I’d rather be out on the street than listen to my mom’s [expletive]. My stepdad, he treats me like I’m a prisoner ‘cause he was a corrections officer, and he treats me like I’m in jail. Nobody trusts me. Everyone wants to judge me, wants to think I’m a bad person, but I’m really not.”
