Jon Taffer, author of the new book “Don’t ******** Yourself, Crush The Excuses That Are Holding You Back,” says there are six major excuses that people use that can prevent them from living the lives they want: fear, time, knowledge, circumstance, ego, and scarcity.

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Know someone with outrageous behavior?

In the video above from Tuesday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Taffer, who is also the star of TV’s “Bar Rescue” and co-host of the new show “Face the Truth,” offers advice to parents and their 31-year-old son who hasn’t moved out of their house. The parents, who admit they support their son, claim he is violent and refuses to leave their home; Kyle, their son, says his parents aren’t helping him enough to get back on his feet.

“I think knowledge is your enemy because you think you know more than everyone else,” Taffer tells Kyle. “You use your knowledge to intimidate your family.”

“Kyle has no reason to change because it’s everyone else’s fault,” Dr. Phil adds. “Necessity is the mother of invention. You have no reason to change because everything I say to you, you say, ‘Yes, but.’ And but means forget what I just said, I’m now going to tell you what I really think … And if it’s everybody else’s fault, you never have a reason to change.”

"Face The Truth" is executive produced by Dr. Phil McGraw and his son, Jay.
