Alex Murdaugh, a South Carolina personal injury attorney, has been charged with the murders of his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul. In the trial set to begin at the end of January 2023, he faces two counts of murder and two counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Murdaugh has pled not guilty.

Before being charged with the two murders, Murdaugh and his prominent family were tied to three mysterious deaths, and Murdaugh has admitted that he tried to stage his own murder. There are also nearly 100 criminal charges linked to Murdaugh.

There have been multiple theories of what Murdaugh’s defense attorneys will argue during the trial. In the video above, former criminal prosecutor Loni Coombs; Michal Higdon, anchor and investigative reporter at WCSC-TV Charleston; forensic expert Joseph Scott Morgan; and former FBI agent Bobby Chacon share their insight. And, Dr. Phil explains the one thing he suggests the defense focus on if they want to mount a reasonable defense.
