The pop icon says she struggled with addiction, an eating disorder and depression since she was a child; and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 18. “I have experienced things that I've not talked about and that I don't know if I ever will talk about. But at 7, I knew that if I were to take my own life that the pain would end.”

On Tuesday’s episode, Dr. Phil asks Demi, “When you thought about taking your own life, was it driven by rage or was it driven by sadness?”

“It was driven by sadness,” she responds. “It was loneliness and depression. And I believe that a lot of that had to do with unresolved issues with my birth father that I hadn’t dealt with yet.”

Demi says her father abandoned the family when she was a child, then died before she had the opportunity to get closure. Does she say she’s forgiven him?
